Elie Honig, a former state and federal prosecutor, a Rutgers University scholar and a CNN legal analyst, states the obvious: Trump is hiding something. That would be the same Trump who said his administration is "the most transparent" in United States history. It was a lie, of course, like almost everything Trump says. He refuses to release his taxes and he and his administration ignored 71 House subpoenas. Seventy-one! Trump is definitely hiding something. Something big. Sooner or later, despite all of Trump's lies and cover-ups and secrecy, somebody will discover what it is.

Congressional Republicans, who are brainwashed, blindly loyal members of the Cult of Donald Trump and worship their orange-skinned cult leader, are unable to see how the President has taken over – and destroyed – the Republican party. It no longer exists, except in name. It is now the Donald Trump party. However, former Congressional Republicans are not so blind:

In a Senate impeachment trial, a minimum of 67 votes is required for conviction. On February 12, 1999, with Chief Justice William Rehnquist presiding over Bill Clinton's trial, 10 Republicans joined with all 45 Democrats in voting for acquittal on a perjury charge and five Republicans joined with all 45 Democrats in voting for acquittal on an obstruction charge. Because of Donald Trump's never-ending "Make America Hate Again" campaign, our nation is more polarized and more divided now than at any time since the Civil War. Rehnquist's successor will preside over Trump's trial and will probably feel as though he's caught in the middle of a gang war.

Democrats want to hear from John Bolton, Mike Duffey and Mick Mulvaney during the Senate impeachment trial. If Trump is as innocent as he claims to be, Republicans should be eager to have them testify – but Mitch McConnell refuses to allow them to. Obviously their testimony would be damning. Lisa Murkowski is hoping for a "full and fair" trial that uses the Clinton impeachment as a model. That's one Christmas wish that will not be fulfilled, not with Republicans controlling the Senate. They've sold their souls to Donald Trump. They will go through the motions of a trial and then unanimously vote for acquittal. Long live Emperor Trump!

Letter from Alan Abajian of Alta Loma in today's Los Angeles Times:
"As Democrats push for witnesses in the Senate trial of President Trump, Republicans talk about the 'possibility' of calling witnesses. But we know they will never call the White House witnesses with firsthand knowledge of the events because these are the people who can tell us the truth. Trump complains that he was denied due process by the House but of course it did not conduct a trial. It held a series of hearings and depositions to decide what the charges would be. Now that an actual trial is imminent in the Senate, Trump has no intention of exercising any of his due process rights except for his privilege against self-incrimination as well as his non-right to prevent others from testifying. Democracy in action, right?"

Republican Senators have been urging Trump to stay off Twitter until the impeachment trial is over. They may as well order the sun to quit shining and the ocean tides to quit flowing. Trump sent out 55 tweets yesterday. Wow. Doesn't he have a country to run?

In a June 27 email to White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, aide Robert Blair said Congress would become "unhinged" if Trump withheld Congressionally-approved military aid from Ukraine as a means of pressuring Ukraine to investigate the Bidens. White House staff knew it was wrong – but nobody tells Emperor Trump what to do. Chuck Schumer wants Mulvaney and John Bolton to testify in the Senate impeachment trial. Mitch McConnell refuses to allow them to. The brainwashed, blindly loyal members of the Cult of Donald Trump don't want us learning the truth about their orange-skinned cult leader. Anyone care for some cyanide-laced grape Flavor Aid?

Nixon's many attempts to cover up the break-in at DNC Headquarters doomed his Presidency. However, Trump's many attempts to cover up the quid-pro-quo deal with Zelensky will not doom the Trump Presidency. The Republican Congressmen who have sold their souls to Donald Trump will make sure of that by refusing to allow Bolton, Duffey and Mulvaney to testify at the Senate impeachment trial, by ensuring that additional incriminating evidence remains hidden from the American public and by ignoring the evidence that has already been presented and unanimously voting for acquittal. They will thus ensure that Emperor Trump remains above the law. And who cares about the Constitution anyway?

If Mitch McConnell refuses to allow Blair, Bolton, Duffey and Mulvaney to testify, the Senate impeachment trial will be a sham. As Nancy Pelosi noted, "Trump engaged in unprecedented, total obstruction of Congress, hiding these emails, all other documents and his top aides from the American people. His excuse was a phony complaint about the House process. What’s the excuse now? Why won’t Trump and McConnell allow a fair trial?" I can answer that: A fair trial would result in Trump's conviction and removal from office. Trump and the Republicans will never allow that. Emperor Trump is above the law and Congressional Republicans will ensure he remains above the law.

"The call was perfect, okay? The withholding of aid was perfect. The request for an investigation of Biden was perfect. Wanting Zelensky to help me win in 2020 is perfect. Everything is perfect, okay? Everything. In fact, everything is so perfect I don't want the American people finding out about any of it, okay?" In Trumpworld, that kind of reasoning makes perfect sense.
Explosive new documents reveal the lengths to which the Justice Department went to conceal the Pentagon's concerns about Trump's Ukraine aid freeze
Business Insider, Jan 2 2020
Newly revealed emails show that the Office of Management & Budget repeatedly ignored warnings from the Pentagon that President Donald Trump's decision to freeze a nearly $400 million military-aid package to Ukraine was illegal. The emails were released to the Center For Public Integrity following a Freedom Of Information Act lawsuit but the Justice Department redacted significant portions. Today the national-security blog Just Security published unredacted versions of the emails that revealed the lengths to which the Justice Department went to conceal the Defense Department's concerns about the Ukraine aid freeze.

The Trump administration – which Trump claims is "the most transparent administration in United States history" – is defying a court order and refusing to release 40 pages of emails between Mick Mulvaney aide Robert Blair and OMB official Michael Duffey. The emails relate to Trump's withholding of Congressionally-approved military aid to Ukraine and pressuring Ukraine to investigate Trump's political rival. In the impeachment investigation, just as it did during the Mueller investigation, the Trump administration engages in lies and cover-ups, hides evidence and refuses to allow witnesses to testify. If you'll excuse me, I want to look up the definition of "transparent."

Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans don't want any witnesses to testify at Trump's impeachment trial. They want to get their sham trial over with as quickly as they can so they can unanimously vote for acquittal while ignoring all the evidence that has already been presented in the House impeachment hearings. Today we have a surprising new development: Bolton is willing to testify. How did the orange-skinned Tweeter-In-Chief respond to the news? He, once again, called impeachment a "hoax." Welcome to Trumpworld.

In other words, "We Republicans, all of whom have sold our souls to Donald Trump, are not going allow John Bolton or any other witnesses to testify and even if we did, it would make no difference because we're going to ignore all the evidence and vote unanimously for acquittal." And Emperor Trump will remain above the law, answerable to no one. America isn't "great." America has become a monarchy.

Nancy Pelosi is being overly and unjustifiably optimistic when she declares in a letter to colleagues, "Soon, the Senate will have the opportunity to honor its oath to 'do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws.'" We already know the outcome of the impeachment trial: Republicans will not be impartial and justice will not be served. They will ignore the evidence and unanimously vote for acquittal and Emperor Trump will remain above the law.

The orange-skinned buffoon who falsely brags about his "transparent" administration tried to hide details of his call to Zelensky, refuses to release his taxes, refuses to cooperate with investigators, refuses to provide subpoenaed documents, threatens and intimidates witnesses and refuses to give details of his meetings with Putin. Now it appears he will refuse to allow his former national security adviser to testify at the impeachment trial. The most crooked, corrupt, dishonest, amoral, unethical, self-serving con man who has ever lived is, not coincidentally, the least transparent person who has ever lived. He's afraid of us learning the truth about him – but he won't be able to hide it forever.

Yes, Emperor Trump keeps calling impeachment a "hoax" and a "scam" but please don't judge him too harshly. After all, he's never read the United States Constitution so he doesn't understand that impeachment is a Constitutional process. He also doesn't understand that obstructing justice, defying subpoenas, interfering with investigations, threatening and intimidating witnesses, withholding Congressionally-approved military aid and seeking election interference from a foreign country are wrong.

"There have been 15 impeachments in the history of the country. Two of them were cut short by resignations. In the other 13 impeachments there were witnesses." That is what Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell told Larry King on CNN, January 28, 1999. McConnell wanted witnesses to testify during the Bill Clinton impeachment trial. McConnell has since become a blindly loyal member of the Cult of Donald Trump and wants no witnesses at Trump's impeachment trial. Nancy Pelosi rightly points out that if no witnesses are allowed, McConnell and Senate Republicans will be guilty of a cover-up and there will be political repercussions.

Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman secretly funneled foreign money into US political campaigns, pushed for the ouster of Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch and assisted Rudy Giuliani in his efforts to persuade Ukrainian officials to dig up dirt on Joe Biden, thereby boosting Trump's chances of being re-elected in 2020. Parnas and Froman, both Soviet-born, have been indicted on several charges including conspiracy, falsification of records and making false statements. They are associates of Rudy Giuliani, Trump's personal attorney who is facing legal troubles of his own. And don't forget, Trump surrounds himself with "the very best people." He says so.

Democrats want John Bolton, Mike Duffey and Mick Mulvaney to testify in the impeachment trial. A small number of Republicans may actually show more loyalty to the Constitution than to Emperor Trump and join with Democrats in calling for witnesses. After all, how can a trial be fair if not all the witnesses are heard and not all the evidence is presented? Nancy Pelosi today noted that 66 witnesses testified in the Clinton impeachment process, including three in the Senate trial, and 90,000 pages of documents were released, whereas Trump "was too afraid to let any of his aides testify and covered up every single document." In response, the orange-skinned parrot squawked his usual mantra: "Hoax! Witch hunt! Hoax! Witch hunt! Awwwrkkk!"
