'Stay out of politics,' McConnell tells CEOs, warns of 'consequences'
Reuters, Apr 5 2021 11:47 AM
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell lashed out at corporate America today, warning CEOs to stay out of the debate over a new voting law in Georgia that has been criticized as restricting votes among minorities and the poor. In a sign of a growing rift in the decades-old alliance between the conservative party and US corporations, McConnell said, “My advice to the corporate CEOs of America is to stay out of politics. Don’t pick sides in these big fights. Corporations will invite serious consequences if they become a vehicle for far-left mobs to hijack our country from outside the constitutional order."

Retrumplicans continue to insist their proposed voting restrictions are all about "election integrity." They will never acknowledge that the 2020 Presidential election was the most safe and secure in our nation's history, nor will they ever admit that the true purpose of the restrictions is to make it much harder for minorities to cast a ballot. By the way, 80% of black voters voted for Biden in 2020. Now you know why Retrumplicans want to discourage blacks from voting. The "win-at-all-costs" Retrumplicans have no shame.
As in Georgia, Texas Democrats look to mobilize businesses against voting restrictions
Yahoo News, Apr 6 2021 2:29 PM
With new voting restrictions making their way through the Texas legislature, Democrats in the state are seeking to replicate the pressure campaign waged by activists and businesses in Georgia to stop the measures from becoming law. A coalition of activists and politicians has called on major corporations with a presence in Texas to stop making political contributions to any state lawmakers who have supported Senate Bill 7, which would limit early voting hours, eliminate drive-through voting centers and roll back an expansion of mail-in voting that was allowed in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Texas is already the hardest state in the country to vote in,” said Sarah Labowitz, policy director with the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas. The bill, which has been introduced in the Texas legislature, would also criminalize any attempt to help people fill out or deliver their mail-in ballot, she said.

A Republican – a Republican! – admits that Georgia's new voting restrictions were enacted in response to the lies spread by Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani.
Georgia's GOP lieutenant governor says Giuliani's false fraud claims helped lead to restrictive voting law
CNN, Apr 8 2021 12:47 AM
A top Georgia Republican said Wednesday that Rudy Giuliani's false claims of election fraud – which were presented before state lawmakers – created momentum for a package of voting rights restrictions that recently became state law. "This is really the fallout from the 10 weeks of misinformation that flew in from Donald Trump," Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan said on CNN's New Day. "I went back over the weekend to really look at where this really started to gain momentum in the legislature, and it was when Rudy Giuliani showed up in a couple of committee rooms and spent hours spreading misinformation and sowing doubt."
Giuliani appeared before Georgia state lawmakers in December when he was serving on Trump's legal team. Giuliani tried, unsuccessfully, to convince legislators to convene a special session to overturn Joe Biden's victory in the state. Giuliani falsely claimed that thousands of dead people voted in the Georgia election, insisted that voting machines had changed people's votes and suggested thousands of others had voted illegally.

One of the most fundamental rights in a democracy is the right to vote. Retrumplicans are using Donald Trump's false claims of widespread voter fraud and a "rigged" and "stolen" election as justification to make it much more difficult for minorities (who tend to vote Democratic) to cast a ballot. The "win-at-all-costs" Retrumplicans have no shame – and they don't like being criticized by the nation's CEOs.

Retrumplicans are obsessed with restricting voting rights in the states, counties and cities which are heavily Democratic. They say they're concerned with "election integrity" – but they don't seem overly concerned with "election integrity" in the states, counties and cities which Donald Trump won in 2020. The "win-at-all-costs" Retrumplicans have no shame. All they care about is Donald Trump and the Retrumplican party.
In Texas, GOP voting bills zero in on Democratic Houston
HuffPost, Apr 15 2021 9:44 PM
The nation’s next big voting battle underway in Texas would outlaw 24-hour polling places and drive-thru voting and make it a crime for elections officials to mail unsolicited absentee ballot applications. Put another way: Everything Houston – the state’s biggest Democratic stronghold– did to expand ballot access last year, when the threat of the coronavirus made voting in-person more hazardous.
Amid a GOP-led campaign to tighten voting laws, Republican lawmakers in Texas have been unusually explicit in zeroing in on Houston and surrounding Harris County as they push to tighten the state’s voting laws. A sweeping package known as House Bill 6 is awaiting a full vote and Republican Governor Greg Abbott supports the bill. The effort is one of the clearest examples of how the GOP’s nationwide campaign to tighten voting laws can target Democrats, even as they insist the measures are not partisan.

Retrumplicans in 40 other sites are planning similar restrictions. Another proposal would bar outside groups from providing water to voters within 150 feet of a polling place. The "win-at-all-costs" Retrumplicans have no shame. Republican state lawmakers look to empower partisan poll watchers, setting off alarms about potential voter intimidation
CNN, May 2 2021 2:19 PM ET
Voting rights activists are sounding alarms about Republican efforts in key states to empower partisan poll watchers and expand voter challenges – arguing it could lead to voter intimidation that recalls dark chapters in US history. Bills in several states would grant new authority to poll watchers – who work on behalf of candidates and political parties – to observe voters and election workers. Critics say it could lead to conflict and chaos at polling places and an improper targeting of voters of color.
In Texas, a measure under consideration by the Republican-controlled legislature would grant partisan poll watchers the right to videotape voters as they receive assistance casting their ballots. In Florida, a sweeping election bill passed Thursday by Republicans in the state legislature specifies that partisan observers must be able see the ballots as canvassing boards work to authenticate voters' signatures on absentee ballots. There are no limits on how many ballots poll watchers can challenge. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, has indicated he will sign the law. In Georgia, the state's controversial new voting law makes it explicit that any Georgian can challenge the qualifications of an unlimited number of voters.

There was no voter fraud in the 2020 Presidential election – but that fact hasn't stopped Retrumplicans from imposing dozens of voting restrictions and claiming the intent is to prevent voter fraud. Retrumplicans' true purpose is to make voting much more difficult for minorities and the elderly. In Texas, the Retrumplicans' voter suppression bill initially was touted as preserving "the purity of the ballot box," a phrase used to disenfranchise black voters following the Civil War. Retrumplicans wound up removing the phrase. It made their anti-black stance way too obvious.

Retrumplicans tried – and failed – to overturn the results of a free and fair Presidential election. Retrumplicans' "Plan B" is to make it much more difficult for minorities and the elderly to cast a ballot. Retrumplicans have introduced more than 400 bills, in 48 states, that would impose new restrictions on voting. New restrictions have already been enacted in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Montana, Utah and Wyoming. Democrats want to make it easier for people to vote – and Retrumplicans are 100% opposed. Let us hope voters remember this in 2022 and 2024 and prevent Retrumplicans from regaining control of the House and Senate.

Democrats walk, stop Texas GOP's sweeping voting restrictions
The Associated Press, May 30 2021 11:54 PM ET
A restrictive voting bill in Texas that was on the verge of Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s desk failed to pass Sunday night after Democrats walked out of the House chamber before a midnight deadline. Abbott swiftly said he would call a special session to try passing a voting bill again but did not say when. “We've said for so many years that we want more people to participate in our democracy. And it just seems that's not the case,” Democratic state Reresentative Carl Sherman said.
The bill known as Senate Bill 7 would have imposed a raft of election changes that eliminate drive-thru voting, empower partisan poll watchers and impose new requirements in order to cast a ballot by mail in Texas, which already has some of toughest voting laws in the nation. About two hours before a midnight deadline to pass the bill, Democrats began filing out of the chamber in greater and greater numbers, denying Republicans the quorum necessary to hold a final vote. The walkout handed Republicans a rare defeat in the Texas Capitol where they wield overwhelming majorities in both the House and Senate.

Harris to lead Biden administration's voting rights effort
Reuters, Jun 1 2021 5:50 PM PDT
President Joe Biden today announced Vice President Kamala Harris will lead the administration's efforts on voting rights as Republican state lawmakers across the country attempt to enact voting restrictions. The efforts by Republican-led state legislatures to pass restrictive laws, which the White House and civil rights groups say make it harder for Americans to vote, follow former President Donald Trump's false claim that he lost the 2020 election because of widespread election fraud.
Biden said voting rights in the United States are "under assault" with an intensity he has never seen before. Harris said in a statement, "Our administration will not stand by when confronted with any effort that keeps Americans from voting. We must protect the fundamental right to vote for all Americans regardless of where they live."
