I'm proud of all the students who are fighting to get our gun laws changed so private citizens can not own AR-15 rifles. Then I see this story and I feel sick:

It's too bad the President was off playing golf. Still, I think it's going to become increasingly difficult for Trump and the Republicans to continue ignoring the urgency to ban certain weapons and enact stronger gun-control legislation. The Parkland massacre stirred up the populace, especially high-school students, in a way that previous school shootings have not.

As President Trump golfed in Florida, a group of teenagers staged a "lie-in" at the gates of the White House Monday to protest the government’s lack of action on gun control. Dozens of students lay on their backs on the sidewalk outside the White House as others stood holding American flags and signs that read "Am I next?" and "Is Congress or the NRA making our laws?" Later they chanted, “Hey, hey, NRA, how many kids did you kill today!”
"Why should we be allowed to live in fear, knowing that one day it could be any of us," an irate teen screamed at the White House. A 10-year-old boy named Leo said, "We’re protesting against people who are shooting at schools and killing innocent kids with guns that should be illegal." "We’re tired of hearing 'thoughts and prayers' from Congress," his mom said. "We want action from Congress."

Caraway uses such dumb expressions as "connect the dots," "at the end of the day" and "step up to the plate" -- but he's a politician. What do you expect? I'm glad he's taking a stand. The NRA is rapidly becoming an organizationem non grata -- and deservedly so.

One of Dallas' top leaders has urged the National Rifle Association to find another city to host its annual convention, taking a stand against gun violence in the wake of last week's deadly mass shooting in Florida. Dwaine Caraway, mayor pro tem of Dallas, said that the NRA, the nation's largest gun lobby, would be met with "marches and demonstrations" if it went ahead with plans to host the three-day meeting scheduled for May 4-6.

When the Florida Marlins play their first 2018 exhibition game February 23 in Jupiter, Florida, the players and coaches and staff will be wearing Stoneman Douglas High School caps. Many of the players have visited survivors of the school shooting and invited them to attend spring training games. (Yes, I know February is winter, not spring -- but the exhibition games are called "spring training.") And my admiration for George Clooney just went way up:

March For Our Lives is a movement created and led by students across the U.S. to demand action on gun control. The group will take to the streets of Washington DC and other cities on March 24. Students in other countries don't deal with problems and frustrations by getting guns and murdering their classmates. Why are so many students in this country so angry and violent and deranged? And why is it so easy for them to obtain assault rifles?

A lot of people blame violent movies and TV shows and video games but I am sure other countries have those things too and students in those countries are not violent. A big part of the problem is what you said, that guns are just too easy for people to get. I do not understand how students can have guns in their bedroom and the parents do not know.
Tonight during a televised CNN Town Hall meeting to address the issue of school shootings and lax gun laws, Florida Senator Marco Rubio was asked -- twice -- "In the name of the 17 Parkland victims, will you quit accepting donations from the NRA?" Rubio refused to say yes. Florida Governor Rick Scott is no different. With very few exceptions, Republicans value guns and the NRA far more than they value human life.

I watched most of that program. People can buy an assault rifle when they are 18 and Rubio said he wants to raise it to 21 but I do not know why we allow assault rifles to be sold in the first place. They are no good for hunting or target practice. They are just being used to kill people.
The danger with allowing a teacher to carry a concealed weapon is that if a shooter should burst into the classroom the teacher would likely be his first target. A much better idea would be to ban the sale and possession of AR-15s.

A lot of people are criticizing the president for saying teachers should be allowed to have guns. I think a much better idea would be for the schools to have metal detectors and armed guards at the entrances. Guns do not belong in a classroom.
Rick Scott today proposed tougher background checks, raising the minimum age for gun purchases, banning bump stocks and "keeping guns away from people with mental issues." A nice speech -- but I doubt anything will come of it. Scott is still a Republican and an NRA puppet and he does not want any guns to be banned, not even AR-15 rifles.

I admire Sarah Chadwick for her clever -- and accurate -- comment. I doubt Rubio will respond, though. He has no shame.

A Florida high school student who survived last week's mass shooting took to social media today to slam Senator Marco Rubio for accepting donations from the National Rifle Association. Sarah Chadwick, a junior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, tweeted a clever jab at Rubio, who reportedly received two donations of $4,950 from the lobbying group during his previous campaigns. "We should change the names of AR-15s to 'Marco Rubio' because they are so easy to buy," Chadwick wrote. The message, which clearly struck a chord on Twitter, racked up more than 32,000 retweets and more than 108,000 likes in less than 12 hours.
Chadwick certainly isn't alone in her criticism of the Republican senator. In the days following the deadly February 14 attack which left 14 students and three faculty members dead, multiple survivors of the shooting have criticized Senator Rubio for his ties to the powerful lobbying group. The NRA allegedly poured more than $3 million into efforts to get him reelected.

The head of the NRA wants everyone in America to have unlimited access to guns and assault weapons. Now he insists he wants "safe schools, safe neighborhoods and a safe country." Sorry, Wayne -- you can't have it both ways. Our nation has the most guns and the most gun violence. Can you not see the connection?

Florida school shooting survivor David Hogg sharply criticized the NRA today for its continued opposition to stricter gun control and lambasted the organization’s spokeswoman for misrepresenting its agenda. "Honestly, it’s disgusting. The NRA acts like they don’t own these politicians, but they do,” Hogg said during an appearance on ABC's This Week. "They’ve gotten gun legislation passed before in their favor, in favor of gun manufacturers. The NRA is an organization that’s completely broken."
Hogg was responding to comments made earlier in the program by NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch, who contended that the NRA was working to make people safer. "We have been supporting proposals to make sure that the system works," Loesch told host George Stephanopoulos. "We’ve been calling for politicians to work with us and make sure that dangerous people who have received due process" can’t access firearms.
Asked whether he and other gun control activists can maintain the political momentum spurred by shooting, Hogg, 17, cited his generation’s growing electoral influence. "The Columbine shooting was 19 years ago. Now that you’ve had an entire generation of kids growing up around mass shootings, and the fact that they’re starting to be able to vote, explains how we’re going to have this change. Kids are not going to accept this."
