North Korea calls terror relisting 'serious provocation' by Trump

North Korea today denounced U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to relist it as a state sponsor of terrorism, calling it a "serious provocation and violent infringement," North Korean state media reported. Trump put North Korea back on a list of state sponsors of terrorism on Monday, a designation that allows the United States to impose more sanctions and risks inflaming tension over North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile programs.
A spokesman for North Korea's foreign ministry denied in an interview with the state media outlet KCNA that his government engaged in any terrorism. He called the state sponsor of terrorism label "just a tool for American style authoritarianism that can be attached or removed at any time in accordance with its interests." The U.S. designation only made North Korea more committed to strengthening its nuclear arsenal, the official said, adding, "The U.S. will be held entirely accountable for all the consequences to be entailed by its impudent provocation."

A report compiled by the European Council on Foreign Relations lists what are, according to inside sources, North Korea’s top missile-strike targets. They include the United States mainland at large and specifically the White House, the Pentagon and Manhattan. The intelligence gathered by the council also suggests that nuclear weapons could be used to attack each of those sites.
Under what circumstances North Korea would launch a nuclear missile is unclear, as, according to the report, "Unlike other nuclear-armed states, it has not published a clear official statement setting out its nuclear doctrine – the circumstances under which it would launch a strike." The council further notes that the reclusive country may believe striking first would be to its advantage due to the slim chances that its regime would remain intact if the U.S. were the first to attack.

When I was a young boy, all the air raid sirens throughout Los Angeles were tested at 10 AM on the last Friday of each month. If we heard the sirens at any other time, we would know we were under attack -- but that never happened. Eventually the monthly tests were stopped. In 2017, however, world affairs are necessitating some changes:

President Donald Trump said today that the United States "will take care of" the North Korea issue after its latest missile launch and that the basic U.S. approach to dealing with Pyongyang will not change. Trump has tightened sanctions on North Korea and pressured China to do more to help rein in Pyongyang's ballistic missile and nuclear ambitions. North Korea today fired what the U.S. Pentagon said appeared to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that landed close to Japan. "We will take care of it. It is a situation that we will handle," Trump told reporters during a meeting with Republican congressional leaders at the White House.

Photos released by North Korean media show the launch process as supervised by the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, and reveal a new missile, the Hwasong-15, that is unlike anything previously seen from the nation. "This is a very big missile," Michael Duitsman, a researcher at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, tweeted. "And I don't mean 'big for North Korea.' Only a few countries can produce missiles of this size and North Korea just joined the club."

Hawaii has tested its nuclear attack siren amid rising US tensions with North Korea. It's the first time they've sounded the alarm since the end of the Cold War. Loud sirens were heard wailing across the region on Friday and they will be repeated on the first business day of each month going forward.
When the alarm is sounded, tourists and residents are advised to seek shelter immediately and to remain there until local radio and television broadcasts announce an all-clear message. In the event of a real nuclear attack, the sirens will serve as a 15-minute warning to residents to take cover. Officials say that’s how long a nuclear missile would take to get to Hawaii from North Korea. The test occurred just days after North Korea launched a ballistic missile they claimed was "capable of striking anywhere in the US."

North Korea said the U.S. is "begging" for a nuclear war by planning the "largest-ever" joint aerial drill with South Korea just after concluding an exercise with nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. "Should the Korean peninsula and the world be embroiled in the crucible of nuclear war because of the reckless nuclear war mania of the U.S., the U.S. will have to accept full responsibility for it," North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency said Saturday, citing a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Six U.S. Raptor stealth fighters planes arrived in South Korea on Saturday for a joint air drill named "Vigilant Ace" scheduled for December 4-8. The F-22s flew into South Korea together in a show of force and, according to Yonhap News, the allies plan to stage simulated attacks on mock North Korean nuclear and missile targets. North Korea’s comments mirror a statement KCNA made last month, saying Washington is seeking to ignite a nuclear war after U.S. B-1B nuclear strategic bombers stationed in Guam flew into South Korea to stage a drill.

The White House has "dramatically" stepped up preparation for a military solution in recent months amid fears diplomacy is not working, well-placed sources told The Telegraph. One option is destroying a launch site before it is used by the regime for a new missile test. Stockpiles of weapons could also be targeted. The hope is that military force would show Kim Jong-un that America is "serious" about stopping further nuclear development and trigger negotiations.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said during a televised New Year’s Day speech that the United States will never be able to start a war against North Korea now that his country has developed the capability to hit all of the U.S. mainland with its nuclear weapons. "The entire United States is within range of our nuclear weapons, and a nuclear button is always on my desk. This is reality, not a threat," Kim said. "This year we should focus on mass producing nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles for operational deployment," Kim said. "These weapons will be used only if our security is threatened."
North Korea tested intercontinental ballistic missiles and conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in September in defiance of international warnings and sanctions, raising fears of a new conflict on the Korean peninsula.

Reacting to Kim's New Year's Day remarks in which he alluded to having a nuclear button at the ready, Trump asserted that his "Nuclear Button" is "much bigger & more powerful" than Kim's — "and my Button works!"
Public outcry was swift. Richard Painter, former chief White House ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, said the tweet was evidence of Trump's instability — and grounds for impeachment. Painter lumped Trump together with the North Korean leader as "two psychologically unfit men crowing about their nukes. Congress needs to deal with one of them and the U.N. Security Council needs to deal with the other."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer slammed Trump's "foreign policy by tweet" in remarks from the Senate floor Wednesday, while Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell tweeted, "This is not normal behavior. Any House GOP members want to make sure Congress has some say before he pushes that button?" Former Vice President Joe Biden, speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill today, deemed the tweets "not presidential." Some Twitter users are pleading with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to suspend Trump's account.

While speaking at a rally for Senate candidate and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey in West Virginia, Trump spoke about his evolving relationship with Kim: "I was really being tough and so was he. And we would go back and forth. And then we fell in love. No, really. He wrote me beautiful letters. They were great letters. And then we fell in love."
Trump praised Kim at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, saying that he was proud of his courage: "I would like to thank Chairman Kim for his courage and for the steps he has taken, though much work remains to be done." A second Trump-Kim summit seems to be in the works.
