Donald Trump stacked the Supreme Court with right-wing, pro-Trump Justices – and now, unless she recuses herself, his criminal trial will be presided over by a right-wing, pro-Trump judge.
Calls grow for Judge Aileen Cannon to recuse herself in Trump documents case
Yahoo News, Jun 12 2023 4:57 PM
A chorus of legal experts is calling for District Court Judge Aileen Cannon to recuse herself from former President Donald Trump’s trial on charges relating to his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House. A Trump appointee, Cannon drew widespread condemnation for her rulings in Trump’s favor during the FBI’s investigation into Trump’s retention of national security information at his private residence and social club in Palm Beach, Florida.
Richard Painter, the White House chief ethics lawyer under George W. Bush; Norman Eisen, who occupied the same position for Barack Obama; and Fred Wertheimer, president of Democracy 21, a nonpartisan, good government advocacy organization, wrote in an article in Slate that Cannon "must recuse herself from the case."
"Judge Cannon’s prior, fundamentally erroneous approach casts a shadow over the proceedings," the bipartisan trio wrote. "Because her earlier handling of this case went well outside the judicial norm and was roundly criticized by the Court of Appeals, reasonable observers of this case could question her impartiality."

Donald Trump and his aide Walt Nauta were taken into custody today by deputy US Marshals at the federal courthouse in Miami. Trump was arraigned on 37 felony charges and pleaded not guilty to every one of them. As we know, Trump never admits to doing anything wrong – ever. And he continues to spread lies about the documents, the FBI search, Jack Smith, Joe Biden, Hilary Clinton and the Department of Justice. His blindly loyal supporters believe his lies. How sad.
Fact check: Debunking Trump’s blizzard of dishonesty about his federal indictment

Trump changed his story tonight. He says he had every right to take all the boxes to Mar-a-Lago but they contained shirts and shoes and other things besides documents. He says he is a busy man and never had time to go through all the boxes.
Of course. Don't all billionaires keep their clothes and shoes in cardboard boxes in a bathroom and on a ballroom stage?
Trump spoke tonight at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey: "Today we witnessed the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country. Very sad thing to watch. It's a political persecution like something straight out of a fascist or Communist nation. I had every right to have these documents. They ought to drop this case."
At least Trump finally has something to talk about besides his Big Lie that the 2020 Presidential election was rigged and stolen.
Retrumplicans have sold their souls to Donald Trump. They protect him and defend him at all costs. They also fear him. They know if they publicly say anything negative about Trump, when they run for re-election he will tirelessly work to defeat them and he will endorse their opponents. In private, however.......
Republicans privately acknowledge Trump's legal woes are serious this time
Many GOP operatives who spoke with NBC News said the federal indictment is serious – and could cause problems for the party.

Trump is calling the indictments "election interference and yet another attempt to rig and steal a Presidential election." Another attempt? No Presidential elections have ever been rigged or stolen. The 2020 election was the most free, fair, secure election in United States history. You lost, Donald. You are a loser. L-O-S-E-R. Loser!

Donald Trump claimed he "declassified" all the classified documents that he had taken to Mar-a-Lago. He of course did no such thing. There are certain procedures that have to be approved, followed and documented. And one of the documents, listed as No. 19 in the indictment, contains information about nuclear weapons. Its dissemination could endanger national security. Under the Atomic Energy Act, it can't be declassified by a United States President but only through a process that requires approval by the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense.
Judge orders Trump lawyers not to release evidence in documents probe

A judge in Florida today ordered defense lawyers for former President Donald Trump not to release evidence in the classified documents case to the media or the public, according to a court filing. The order from U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart also put strict conditions on Trump's access to the materials.
"The Discovery materials, along with any information derived therefrom, shall not be disclosed to the public or the news media, or disseminated on any news or social media platform, without prior notice to and consent of the United States or approval of the Court," the order said. It also specified that Trump "shall not retain copies" and that he may review case materials only "under the direct supervision of Defense Counsel or a member of Defense Counsel's staff." The order granted a motion filed last week by prosecutors who had asked the court to put conditions on how the defense stores and uses the documents.

Judge sets August 14 trial date for Trump in documents case
Reuters, Jun 20 2023 9:54 AM PDT
U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has set an initial trial date of August 14 in Florida on former President Donald Trump's federal charges of willful retention of classified government records and obstruction of justice. The date, if it holds, would put Trump on trial nine days ahead of the first Republican Presidential debate scheduled for August 23. The Justice Department's special counsel in the case, Jack Smith, promised a speedy trial but legal experts say the complexities of handling highly classified evidence, the degree to which Trump's legal team challenges the government's pretrial motions, and the way the judge manages the schedule could all lead to a trial that is anything but swift.

Donald Trump has always believed he is above the law. Until recently, he has been above the law – even laws of his own making. That is finally starting to change.
Republican group taunts Trump with his own damning words in new ad
HuffPost, Jun 21 2023 5:04 AM EDT
A Republican group opposed to Donald Trump will run a new ad on Fox News and CNN this week in which an unexpected figure makes the legal case against the former President: Trump himself. The ad from the Republican Accountability Project highlights old comments from Trump on the importance of classified documents as he accused 2016 rival Hillary Clinton of mishandling sensitive materials. "I’m going to enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information," he said in a clip from a 2016 rally. In a clip from 2020, he said people "go to jail for that."
Trump now stands accused of doing exactly what he spoke out against, not only keeping classified documents but doing so in sloppy conditions. One photograph shows boxes of documents piled up near a toilet at his Mar-a-Lago home."It’s time to hold Trump to Trump’s own standard," the voiceover in the ad states.
The Republican Accountability Project is spending $1 million to run the spots both nationally and in the key swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Iowa and Wisconsin.
