In 2003, the musical received 13 Tony award nominations and won eight, including best musical, best original score, best actor in a musical (Harvey Fierstein) and best actress in a musical (Marissa Jaret Winokur). Hicks was a member of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys for five years, then spent four years in Porter Wagoner's band, seven years in Judy Lynn's band and 23 years in Ricky Skaggs' band. Hicks also recorded with J.D. Crowe, Kenny Baker, Doyle Lawson, David Osborne and others and released two solo albums, Texas Crapshooter in 1978 and Fiddle Patch in 1998.
