Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson are opposed to mask mandates, vaccination mandates and lockdowns. All five Governors are Republicans. On Tuesday, President Biden singled out the Governors of Texas and Florida when he said, “I believe the results of their decisions are not good for their constituents. It’s clear to me and to most of the medical experts that the decisions being made, like not allowing mask mandates in the schools, are bad health policy. I say to these Governors, please help. If you aren’t going to help, at least get out of the way of the people who are trying to do the right thing. Use your power to save lives."

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson said he regrets signing a law banning local mask mandates as COVID-19 cases continue to rise in his state. The Republican was asked at a press conference Tuesday why he signed the ban. He replied, “Our cases were at a low point. Everything has changed now. In hindsight, I wish that had not become law, but it is the law, and the only chance we have is either to amend it or for the courts to say that it has an unconstitutional foundation.” Over the last 14 days, Arkansas has seen a 69% increase in cases and a 52% increase in hospitalizations. Only 37% percent of Arkansas residents have been fully vaccinated, one of the lower rates in the country.
