The 2020 election will be a referendum on Donald Trump, who lost the popular vote in 2016 but won the Presidency because of the Electoral College's un-democratic rule that "some votes count more than others." Democrats can not afford to take for granted that Republicans will lose in 2020. They need to hurry up and decide on a candidate.
With impeachment looming, both Republicans and Democrats are on edge about 2020
Los Angeles Times, Nov 22 2019 12:35 PM
President Trump is close to being impeached by the House. His party just lost two gubernatorial races in conservative states and control of the Virginia legislature. House Republicans have been stampeding toward retirement. It looks like Democrats are on a roll but you wouldn’t know it from the high-anxiety mood of the party.
Republicans are no calmer. They worry about their mercurial President and the impact he could have on races down the ballot in 2020. Party strategists doubt they can win back a majority in the House. Some fear they could lose control of the Senate. The result, as Washington moves toward an impeachment showdown, is a rare chapter in American politics when members of both parties seem wracked with insecurity.
The anxiety on both sides is a departure from the political norm. Usually one party or the other has a clear upper hand, especially when an incumbent is running for reelection. Trump is one of the most vulnerable incumbents to seek reelection since the Great Depression in the 1930s: His approval rating has remained stuck below 50% for the entirety of his presidency.
Democrats have not experienced the political backlash some feared from launching their impeachment inquiry. Neither have the hearings produced narrative-changing revelations that Republicans feared could force them to abandon the President.

Bloomberg was a Democrat. Then he became a Republican. Then he became an independent. Now he's a Democrat again. He's also the ninth-wealthiest American and the 14th-wealthiest person in the world. And, as expected, he's running for President. He's optimistic that if one white septuagenarian billionaire can get elected, so can he.

The wealthiest men to serve as United States President are, in order of net worth adjusted for inflation, Donald Trump, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Andrew Jackson. Trump's worth is estimated at $3.1 billion, more than that of the previous 44 Presidents combined. Michael Bloomberg's wealth is fifty-two billion dollars. Just think if he'd use some of that money to build homeless shelters and drug treatment centers instead of spending huge sums on political ads for a race he has zero chance of winning.

Elizabeth Warren's support among Democratic voters has fallen by 50% since last month. It is obvious that "Medicare For All" and posing for selfies will not be enough to propel her into the White House.

Following Nixon's Watergate scandal and impending impeachment, the opposing party won the White House. Following Clinton's impeachment, the opposing party won the White House. CNN senior political analyst Ron Brownstein says the Ukraine scandal will solidify opposition to Trump and Democrats will take advantage of it. He expects Trump's re-election strategy will be to savagely attack his Democratic opponent and insist he's "the lesser of two evils." Nope, sorry. Trump is the biggest evil.

In an editorial in yesterday's Los Angeles Times, Carla Hall wrote that it was "exhilarating to see a smart, accomplished, powerful Senator who is also a black woman running for President" and "depressing" to see Kamala Harris withdraw from the race after her poll numbers plummeted. Hall concluded, "The question is how she will retool her image. Depending on who is slated to get the nomination, she could be a vice presidential candidate." Joe Biden is thinking the same thing.

In 2016, "rigged" was Donald Trump's favorite word: The polls are rigged, the poll questions are rigged, the debates are rigged, the nominating conventions are rigged, the primaries are rigged, the election is rigged, the ballots are rigged, the voting machines are rigged. Then Trump lost the popular vote but became President anyway and, lo and behold, he quit saying everything was rigged. And that brings us to 2020:

Emperor Trump is a racist, bigoted white nationalist who insults and belittles black men, black mayors, black Congresswomen and black communities. At a June 2016 rally in Redding, Trump saw a black man in the crowd and exclaimed, "Look at my African American over here! Look at him! Isn't he great?" His African American? Wow. (That man, Gregory Cheadle, quit the Republican party three months ago because of Trump's never-ending racism.) Only 10% of blacks approve of Trump's job as President and only 7% say they will vote to re-elect him. The Trump campaign is now running ads in black-owned newspapers and on black-owned radio stations, hoping to increase Trump's appeal to black voters. Yeah, trying to buy votes by spending huge sums of money on self-serving, braggadocio-filled political ads. Good luck with that.
