Mueller refers sex assault scheme targeting him to FBI for investigation

Special counsel Robert Mueller last week asked the FBI to investigate a possible scam in which a woman would make false claims that he had sexually assaulted her, after several political reporters were contacted about doing a story on the alleged assault.

Multiple reporters were contacted over the past few weeks by a woman who said she had been offered money to say she was sexually assaulted by Mueller, the special counsel who is probing possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. After investigating, the reporters each independently determined the assault allegation was likely a hoax and that it was unclear if the woman had been offered money to make the claim. The reporters then contacted the special counsel's office to report that they had been approached about the scheme.

"When we learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the special counsel, we immediately referred the matter to the FBI for investigation," said Peter Carr, spokesperson for the special counsel.

Matthew Whitaker, a very vocal critic of the Mueller investigation and who says a probe of Trump's finances would be "crossing a red line," is now, unless he recuses himself, in charge of the Mueller investigation. And the Swamp just keeps on getting swampier.

Senator Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat who has often sided with President Trump, said today in a CBS This Morning interview that the US is "on the verge" of a constitutional crisis after the firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He also said he hopes Congress picks up legislation to protect Robert Mueller's Russia investigation when they return to Washington next week.

"I think it's a big mistake to let Jeff Sessions go,'" Manchin said. "I understand the Mueller investigation is wrapping up. You ought to have a team in place to wrap it up so there's no questions." Asked about Matthew Whitaker, who was appointed acting attorney general by Trump, Manchin say he is concerned that "a person that's been so vocal against the investigation is put in charge a day after the election. I think that sheds bad light on it. I think that gives concern to every senator, Democrat and Republican. We are a country. The rule of law is everything. It's how we govern ourselves. Looking like it's all been tilted one way or the other is wrong."

Donald Trump, whom a White House official said yesterday is "pissed at damn near everyone," had another Twitter tantrum this morning, denouncing the Mueller investigation as "a total witch hunt like no other in American history" (even though there have been many indictments, guilty pleas and plea bargains) and insisting Mueller has found "no collusion" (even though the investigation is ongoing and Mueller has not released his findings). Trump also said Mueller should be investigating "the other side," meaning Hillary and the Democrats. Trump is getting increasingly unstable, angry, hostile and irrational. Trump and his attorneys are saying some of the questions to which Robert Mueller wants answers are a "perjury trap." Jeffrey Toobin, an author, lawyer and former associate counsel in the Department of Justice, is CNN's chief legal analyst. Today on CNN, Toobin asked, "What are 'perjury traps'? I've never heard of any 'perjury traps.' If you tell the truth, you don't have to worry about perjury."

Trump does not know how to tell the truth so it is not surprising that he's fearful of committing perjury.

Trump is correct when he says Mueller's investigative team has "bad intentions." Yes, indeed -- they want Trump to tell the truth.
