Mueller recommends 6-month sentence for Papadopoulos

Special counsel Robert Mueller recommended in a court filing today that former Trump campaign staffer George Papadopoulos be sentenced to a maximum of six months in prison. Papadopoulos is set to be sentenced on September 7.
Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in October 2017 of one count of lying to FBI agents working for Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. He was the first person charged in connection with Mueller's investigation.
In the court filing, Mueller wrote that Papadopoulos' "lies negatively affected the FBI's Russia investigation"and his "lies were not momentarily lapses. He lied repeatedly over the course of more than two hours and his lies were designed to conceal facts he knew were critical."

Former CIA director John Brennan, who was stripped of his security clearance because of his involvement in the Russia investigation, is threatening to sue Trump in order to prevent him from revoking the security clearance of other intelligence officials for similar politically-motivated reasons. Today the Tweeter-In-chief responded with childish name-calling and the usual parrot-like "rigged witch hunt" squawk.

Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign manager, was found guilty today on eight counts in the bank and tax fraud case against him. The jury remain undecided on the remaining 10 counts. The verdicts come after prosecutors laid out what they said was Manafort’s scheme to illegally hide tens of millions of dollars he earned as a political consultant in Ukraine. They said he also committed fraud to obtain millions more in bank loans and mortgages. Manafort did not testify in his own defense.

Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former personal lawyer, pleaded guilty today to campaign finance and other charges. He made the extraordinary admission that he paid a pornographic actress "at the direction of the candidate," referring to Trump, to secure her silence about an affair she said she had with Trump. Cohen told a judge in United States District Court in Manhattan that the payment was "for the principal purpose of influencing the election" for President in 2016.
Cohen also pleaded guilty to multiple counts of tax evasion and bank fraud, bringing to a close a months-long investigation by Manhattan federal prosecutors who examined his personal business dealings and his role in helping to arrange financial deals with women connected to Trump.

Very predictably, Trump is accusing Michael Cohen, who pleaded guilty yesterday to eight charges, of making up stories. Hey, Donald, were those eight criminal charges made up? Would a judge accept guilty pleas if Cohen had been making things up? Wouldn't Cohen, who was under oath, be charged with perjury if he had made things up? And do you remember when you were aboard Air Force One and told reporters you knew absolutely nothing about hush-money payments made to Stormy Daniels, with whom you had an affair (which you also denied)? You lied, Mister President. Cohen told the truth -- and you lied.

Michael Cohen might testify to Robert Mueller concerning whether Trump knew ahead of time that Russians would hack into Democratic party computers. It was this hacking that led to the 13 indictments which were the original topic of this thread. (Just yesterday, the DNC notified the FBI of new hacking attempts.) A sitting President can not be indicted -- but if Trump is complicit, criminal charges could be filed as soon as he's out of office.
