Artie Lange Explodes On Stern Show
Artie Lange seems to be a person that deals in extremes. Yesterday, a docile Artie slept his way through the Howard Stern Show, and today, he exploded into a rage that resulted in a physical altercation with his assistant Teddy.
It all started when Artie and Teddy had an argument in the hallway. Ever the show host, Stern brought Teddy into the studio to do an on air resolution to what Artie and Teddy were arguing about. The segment was boisterous and started out as something entertaining to listen to. It was obvious that Artie was upset, but no one could have foreseen what happened at the end of the segment.
The argument went from Teddy messing up on some assignments, to a discussion of what exactly teddy’s responsibilities were, to how much money Teddy makes as an assistant to Artie. At one point, Lange accused Teddy of stealing money from him, and being ungrateful for additional bonuses and loans that Artie had given Teddy.
Then the Flash Point.
Artie threw a glass of water across the studio, jumped over the studio console, and went right after Teddy. The studio erupted into confusion as Stern Show staffers threw themselves between the 300 pound Lange, and Teddy. Artie was so angered that he literally would have ripped off Teddy’s head had he been able to get to him. Robin was screaming, Stern was calling for control, and the sounds of a scuffle filled the airwaves.
Once settled, Howard expressed grave concern for what had transpired. Artie came back into the studio, and was still angered. At one point Lange even spoke of resigning from the show. Stern stated that the behavior exhibited by Artie was unacceptable and that informed Artie that he needs to maintain control of himself. Artie, speaking about himself said that he was not a good person, and there was no way he could guarantee that such an episode would not happen again. It was suggested that Artie leave the studio, which he did.
Lange and his assistant Teddy are both scheduled to fly to Amsterdam this evening. The status of the trip is unknown. Show staffers were expressing concern for bot Teddy as well as Artie, and efforts were made to get someone with Artie, as staffers felt that Artie was at a breaking point.
For his part, Teddy returned to the studio and spoke to Stern. Teddy said he was not going to sue, and that he had hopes that something good could come from this. Teddy at one point offered to leave the show so that the show would not suffer from a loss of Artie. Stern informed Teddy that this suggestion was not the solution.
Whether Lange returns to the Howard Stern Show is now likely up in the air. At this point it would appear that Stern wants to let the situation cool down, and will address things later. The question now is whether Lange, who clearly has a lot of ongoing issues, is in the right frame of mind to not only be a show participant, but should he even be alone, and traveling to a country where things are a bit more liberal with drugs given Artie’s current mental state.
There is concern for Artie as a person here, as well as a professional on the show, and no one knows exactly how to address it. Stern has in the past banned talent from the show because of physical altercations. On the professional side what happened today is not appropriate, and a ban should be considered. Artie has to know that being on the Stern show has catapulted his comedy career, so such a move could be financially devastating. On a personal side, there is obvious concern for Lange. No one wants to see Lange fall.
While Lange has expressed rage and hate for Teddy, it is perhaps Teddy’s actions that will be Artie’s savior. Teddy is not going after anyone, and not pressing the issue. Whether or not Lange will see this is unknown. With Lange scheduled to be away over the weekend, it may be Monday before we know any more detail.

i love artie on the stern show. and he will be sorely missed. i can’t imagine the show without him, but he REALLY needs to take some time away to fix himself. i’d rather he leave the show for a while than have him remain in his current condition and end up dead in a few months.
artie…please get your mind right.
It is time for artie to take a break from the show. He is clearly out of control. How many more excuses can one make for him? To have him repeatedly sleep on the show, not show up, and explode like this on the show. How much more evidence do howard and Sirius people need to clearly show he is ready to leap off a bridge. Clearly Artie has demons he is dealing with, but at want point due you realize he is a danger to other people. Artie is “prone” to violence, can we explain away things like that. Artie is out of control.
I thought this was a joke at first. But then I heard the replay. WOW, I hope they can fix this. Artie you gotta get on track.
Artie is a whacked out psycho that cannot lay off the booze and drugs and Howard is a bit of a two face if he doesn’t fire Atie’s sorry ass. I know all the listeners remember the AJ/Stuttering John fiasco.
Personally, this could be the lead up to one of the greatest Stern shows ever. Artie gets axed and OD’s a few days later. The talk on the airwaves would be huge – Sirius would sell another ten million units in hours!!!!
PS – Updated dead pool anyone?
Artie the greatest. I hope he decides to stay. I love the Artie eating the cupcake artwork from http://www.photofiddle.com
I hope Artie DOESN’T go to Amsterdam. I think he will be signing his death sentence if he does. Too many drugs easily accessible for him. He needs to take a break from the show and take care of himself.
artie is the man and he needs help…i hope he gets it…howard should look past it…but will sirius? we have to wait 10 days to find out…get better Art.
Weeks ago, Artie commented that he wasn’t sure what his future on the show would be after his planned USO trip to Iraq. No one picked up on that comment. Yesterday, he noted that he needed to take a physical exam prior to the trip. Perhaps this requirement and its possible effect on the USO trip, together with his personal problems, building up for two years with no successful efforts to resolve them, caused this fight with his assistant to be the excuse he has long sought–to end his work on the Stern show.
If you look at this rather unfortunate episode in context, it is clearly disturbing — but no one should be the least bit surprised.
Shit happens when people become abusive, inconsiderate and take the feelings of others for granted.
Blame can be placed on nearly everyone here up and down the line…
From Artie himself, whose actions clearly crossed the line….to Howard…who in his own inimitable way — did his best to provoke (though he certainly did not expect that he would unleash the kind of fury that resulted), to Teddy…whose disrespect would never have been tolerated in any other business situation…to the entire Gang, who had a helluva lot of laughs — some of them, perhaps a little to cruel and close to home — during the previous day’s sleeping episode.
It’s so obvious that Artie is much less thin-skinned that he’d like us to believe. Howard’s incessant provoking, Robin’s well-chosen words and all the shit from the Gang and the rest of the interns — who took such enjoyment from going over all the minutia in such extraordinary detail yesterday on the wrap-up show & Intern Show…..SET THE STAGE for today’s extraordinary outburst.
Artie will need to make some kind of commitment for getting into some treatment before Howard allows him to come back.
We all know that he needs to control his anger and be able to “Be in The Moment” mindful of the possible consequences of his actions, should he ever again become “out-of-control’.
Familiarity breeds contempt…
Listening to the show closely in the last week or so…you could clearly hear a bunch of shit building — so that there ultimately is an explosion of one sort or another. To be truly professional, people need to pay a litle more attention to each other’s feelings.
One of the reasons, the show has always enjoyed the unique status it has, is because Howard has always intuitively known how far to press an issue. But the man is only human and we all make mistakes.
I don’t think Howard would be comfortable with Artie leaving under these circumstances. Eveyone needs to grow-up a bit by themselves.
stern was doing some serious (sirius) ass covering today.. he did help create the situation and artie told him so quite clearly. accusing someone of theft on national radio is a big deal. if you are wrong, you get sued.
artie used to be great. watch him on howard tv when he first started. he was all full of energy and enthusiasm. now his gluttony in all areas of his life have made him a miserable human being and he is now miserable to listen to… he is a subpar standup and the only reason he makes so much money is the stern show..fat, high, and hostile is no way to go thru life , blutto
It’s been very clear the past couple of weeks that Artie’s demons are overtaking him. He really needs to take some time off for his sanity and safety. While I love hearing him on the show, he is obviously in a downward spiral and needs some intervention. I guess we will see what happens when the Stern show’s vacation is over. I wish Artie the best and hope someone comes to his aid.
i just hope he did not go to amsterdam.ponder on that……get well artie.
Artie is self destructive and ultimately a bad person. He attempts to cover for this by being overly generous with cash, etc. He is on a self destructive path. If Howard wants a show out of this, it could start with “Intervention” and end with “The Biggest Loser”. Granted Teddy sounds like somewhat of a screwup, but it is hard to even guage that as it was just about impossible for him to get a word in. The fact that he went after him both verbally and physically is absolutely unacceptable. Forget his resignation, in any other workplace he probably would have been arrested and terminated on the spot. Such behavior cannot be tolerated under any circumstance. To be perfectly honest, if Teddy truly is paid $42K, my first impression he is underpaid for having to put up with an abusive overweight whore mongering A-whole, who to be perfectly honest, shows by his action and words he knows he is overpaid and not really worth what he makes. He is self loathing and ashamed of himself as well he should be. F Artie, good riddance. I would rather listen to Jackie. The only difference between Artie and Crazy Alice is that Crazy Alice has come to grips with who she is.
What’s strange is they are replaying the show, they are looping the 4/07 show.
Also, no mention of it on the site today.
Artie is back on the dragon, no doubt. Howard stirred the pot one to many times and it bit him in the ass.
Just as long as they don’t bring Jackie back.
as far as not replaying the show, that’s the lawyers doing.
Artie needs to go to treatment for his anger issues. Someone will get hurt if these issues are allowed to continue. Artie is also right, he is a bad person! I understand he is good natured and very generous but he can’t control his anger which is out of control. His human system is out of control; it is filled with crappy food, illegal drugs, beers and prescription drugs. He is ready to blow or go to sleep at a minutes’ notice. I would model it like a pressure cooker ready to blow.
Howard, if he doesn’t get help he has to go. I love him too! He is GREAT! BUT, I am a stock holder and we can’t afford the risk.
he can’t handle the schedule..he loves sports and i think he is up til 11 waking at 5am. he needs a break..
I love Artie. He is really such a great personality for the show being that he is a fan first and then a show star.
Personally, I think he put himself in a quandry by joining the show and being such a fan. I can only imagine how stressful that role is since the show isn’t the same as it once was in its heyday.
I think part of his frustration is that he is on the show that used to deal with so much external conflict. They had censorship, faulty equipment, disappointing management, and many issues in terrestrial radio that made for really interesting radio.
Now they don’t have those conflicts so they create conflict in the group itself. No one wants their dirty laundry aired and discussed over and over. Artie for sure doesn’t like it and has said it over and over.
Personally, I enjoy it as I know Howard does as well. Its interesting to see how people react and then analyze the reaction.
I think Artie’s eating, smoking, lack of exercise, gambling, oversleeping, and just excessive living are his way of handling so much stess in his life. He is at rock bottom now. But he keeps avoiding dealing with the issues that just keep bubbling over.
It sounds like his personal finances are in turmoil, we can see he is not eating well, he isn’t sleeping either (sleep apnea), and he isn’t able to keep good relationships.
He needs to take a break and get his life together. I don’t think one person is to blame for this. They all just need to let Artie what Artie needs to do. Not what Artie wants to do! He needs serious therapy to get to the root of all this. He needs introspection without having that introspection broadcast to all of us.
Artie – if you read this, we are all pulling for you!
artie lange is dead
i have sirius because of my hubby now not a day goes by that i dont listen to some howard stern, i am concerned that artie will end up like chris farley or jim belushi-which is sad and a huge waste of time and life
how bad can life be that he has to behave this way..all anyone wants is for artie to take care of himself-everyone loves artie but lately it seems like he wants to be somewhere else he hardly contributes to the shows and when he does its like he is in a daze..i hope this is not the end of artie
Damn Artie… Come on. Don’t make it hard to root for you.
You know, enough with the Artie and drug talk. I mean seriously you idiots think artie is heroin? If artie was back on using heroin you wouldnt be seeing him around, stop always looking for something wrong u fucking idiots..artie clearly got pissed with the whole staff there included his dumb fucking assistant who leaves his passport lying around…i mean u work with the same poeple for 8 years straight, at 6am the same fucking faces over and over its FUCKING NORMAL PEOPLE GET A GRIP OF YOURSELVES!! holy shit , you guys r the damn reason why he is so fucking pissed, the guy cant talk a god damn shit without someone saying or thinking something holy shit! cool the fuck down !!!
“Just as long as they don’t bring Jackie back.”
I wouldn’t mind seeing Jackie come back. When Jackie left Fred disappeared from the show. The two of them poked fun at each other constantly. The day Jackie quit Fred went into a shell.
Artie’s used to be a really funny guy, kind of an average joe hanging out with Stern. Now he’s just a trainwreck. He’s become another Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf — a guy you laugh AT, not with. And Artie is going to kill himself, just like Hank. When Artie leaves (by firing, quiting, or overdose) how hard will it be to replace him? Artie isn’t some bottomless pit of comedy. He’s had a crazy life that has given him a big supply of funny stories to tell, but he’s done. He’s a sponge that has been wrung dry. Stern wants somebody who will never outshine him, someone who is a bit of a freak, someone he can make fun of. There’s gotta be hundred guys who could replace Artie. Jackie and Artie are completely different but both added to the show. They don’t need a new Artie, they just need someone new, someone who can bring their own thing to the show.
Artie should be suspended for 2 weeks so he can cool down, asses the situation and take a hard look at his life. Sirius cannot allow this behavior to stand unchecked- what happens the next time he does this and someone gets hurt? Artie is great on the show, but it is a business and the company needs to cover their ass. Howard is a very reasonable guy and should take the initiative to meet privately with Artie to discuss life and his future with the show.
Not playing the replay was a poor choice. Stern fans are part ofthe loyal family which has gotten the show to where it is today- they should be allowed to hear replays of the good, bad and ugly.
Well, People…It’s Me…Howard Stern, and this is the story. Sorry that we did not do the replay of Thursdays show, but Artie was gasping for air and nobody wanted to put their lips onto his rotting carcass. So, we finally got him up on his feet and he wanted a drink of water. While one of the staff members went to get a bottle of water for him, he said that he could just get a drink from the bathroom, because it was closer and probably faster. While he was getting a drink of water, the toilet lid came down and broke his big fat freakin’ neck! Good Bye Artie…..Won’t miss you at all! LOSER!!!!!
Hey Artie….I got three letters for your stupid ass….WAH! That’s right…WAH! How do you like it, LOSER? Take your trip to Iraq (if they can find a seat on a plane wide enough for your fat ass), and PLEASE let me design the shirt that you will wear while you’re over there. It’s a pretty simple design, and I’m sure a lot of fans from the show will like it too. It kinda looks like….No it really does look like the logo from the Target stores! Ha! Ha! Ha! Wear it proudly chump!
It has been painful to watch Artie’ downward spiral over the past year. His self loathing worsens with every passing day. Instead of getting help by way of therapy to repair his relationship with Dana the so called love of his life….he refuses….and lets the relationship end. The women in his life are now hookers. This is what Artie thinks he deserves.
Rather than do something about his obesity he continues to eat…. tempting fate that any day he may keel over from a heart attack…..and that day is not far away.
Stories about Artie’s gambling, drinking, smoking and drug abuse are no longer funny. The fans feel like they have a ring side seat to the suicide of somebody they have come to care about. Every Monday when I tune in to Howard….I wait to hear if Artie is still alive.
Flawed people are entertaining….but this has gone too far.
As much as I love Artie and would miss him dearly….Howard has to fire him. The show will continue. Hearing what happened on Thursday’s show with Teddy was the last straw. Go get help Artie. Your behavior of late has screamed the need for it. You are sabataging your life in every way. Thank you for making me laugh over the years. You will be missed and I hope to see you down the road when you’ve cleaned up your life. Good luck buddy.
If Artie is off the show the go ahead and cancel my sirus account and my howard tv because I will no longer need to watch/listen
I just hope Artie doesn’t OD in Amststerdamn. I feel a sort of comroderie with Artie having my own struggle with drugs. What he did on the show was qualifying just how much he wants to run away and be left without rsponsibilities so he can get messed up on drugs yet again. I fear that he is following Jackie’s path to show-biz hell if he leaves the show. Good Luck Art…hope you come back to the show.
I love Artie but he been corrupted by money and fame. He’s no longer the guy that worked on the docks. He doesn’t respect the show anymore just as he stated in an argument with Sal on “The Wrap-Up Show”. Sal said to Artie that if he were to be introduced on Letterman it would be Sal Governale from the Howard Stern show. Artie quickly responded with “Well, that’s not me!” I don’t think RESCUE ME will take care off him the the Stern show does. Artie get help! Please!
I have really enjoyed listening to Artie on the show. I won’t say I love him, because I don’t know him, but I did start listening to Howard when he joined, and I can’t imagine what the show would be like without him and wish I didn’t have to. When he’s in good form, he’s the best. I think he’d be a great guy to sit in a bar with and have a laugh, but he is seriously damaged, and I don’t find it funny anymore. I have gotten so sick of hearing about his weight and his failed relationships and his problems, which all appear to be self-inflicted. He has all the resources in the world to be a better person, mentally and physically, job security, money, family, friends, yet he constantly rejects every opportunity to get better. People, fans and coworkers, need to say enough, including Howard. At this point, he’s not a good person, and no one should have to suffer his abuse. He’s just like any other abuser: he hurts the people who care about him, then feels guilty about it and puts himself down, then everyone feels bad for him and tries to make him feel better, and then he goes ahead and hurts them again. He’s so obviously on drugs: the sweating, calling in sick, the hair-trigger anger, and the people on the show refuse to acknowledge it. Having been with a substance abuser in the past, it is actually painful to listen to Artie’s downward spiral and his affect on all the people who continue to accept his abuse and make excuses for his inexcusable behavior. I felt so terrible when Teddy said Artie didn’t mean it and that it was his fault for bringing up a subject that would set Artie off. I know how hard it is to say, I can’t help you anymore and I need to take care of myself first, but that’s the only power you have left over the situation. As much as Gary and all the rest claim they’re not enablers and there’s nothing they can do, they are enablers, and there is something they can do: kick Artie off the show. I wish that wasn’t the answer, but it’s the only one available if Artie continues to refuse the help he so obviously needs.
I’ve been listening for about eight years. The past year or so, it’s gotten more and more painful to listen to Artie. Not simply because of the weight gain, wheezing, sleeping, drugs, alcohol, hookers, etc. — but because he’s just not funny anymore. And Artie doesn’t see that. He’s always been the “lovable screwup” but it’s gone too far. He keeps trotting out the same old stories, and if I have to hear him say one more time “I used to be an athlete, you know…” I will turn off the radio. It’s embarrassing and transparent and awkward.
This is exactly what Artie Lange has wanted. He clearly wanted to rid himself of the show. His actions point to this fact every day. If you really value and respect your job, do you sleep there? Do you cram 10,000 calories down your throat and crash in a sugar/fat meltdown leaving you worthless? Artie has been looking for an out for a long time. I think it may have been a little under a year ago after the “Bro” fight with Howard, where Artie was looking into leaving the show “for himself”, to get better. He said he was going to travel to Italy or something proposterous like that. He is clearly a fragile human being who needs to admit that he has a problem. He always says that he knows how messed up he is, but he hasn’t truly admitted his problem because he refuses to do anything about it. His problem may seem to big to him. After all, it does encompass a myriad of things. Alcohol, addiction, laziness, overeating, sex with hookers etc. I like the guy, but c’mon dude….Get real….you have such a good life there if you want it. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and take back your life.
Howard clearly pushed Artie’s buttons by taking up for Teddy. Howard never should of got in the middle, much less take Teddy’s side. Everyone can say what they went about Artie’s problems, but the be all end all is he’s great for the show and it’s amazing he hasn’t tried to beat someone elses ass as much as he gets f’d with. Howard certainly wasn’t his BRO there!!
Dump that fat load Artie NOW…Bring back Jackie Martling
howard stern is totally irrelavent.
it is interesting when wack-a-doos blow up on air though.
in a few years he’ll be on the home shopping network shlepping gold plated old time microphones.
This comment aged well. Idiot. Stern signed a contract for 500 million and has millions of listeners.
I agree with the guy who wants to bring back Jackie. The Jackie Martling/Billy West 90s version of the show was the best Stern era. Artie was a despicable person and a train wreck—good radio sometimes, but more often you got a junkie wishing AIDS on 8-year-old kid’s, phoning in his work, and genuinely acting like a horse’s rectum.
As for the show today? Yeesh. Unlistenable. Jackie and Billy would turn that show around in a heartbeat, but it’ll never happen. Stern gave us decades of great radio and deserves to go out on his terms, but it’s still sad to see what the HSS has become.
