Members of Congress Make Their Opposition Known
Seemingly four members of Congress have written letters to the Attorney General or the FCC Chairman opposing the potential Sirius XM merger. Go ahead and take a gander at what their arguments are, some of them can be quite entertaining.
Mike Doyle, D-PA (NAB Donated $9,248 in 06)
James T. Walsh, R-NY
John McHugh, R-NY
Kirsten E. Gillibrand, D-NY
Don’t forget, these are your local representatives and there would be nothing wrong with writing or calling their offices to voice your opinion since they are suppose to be acting on your best interest.
Correct me if I’m wrong — I work for the NAB so I bet you’d like to — but didn’t Sirius and XM agree not to merge when their licenses were approved?
I for one won’t correct you. Working at the NAB proves that you have a real good idea of what the meaning of wrong is. You guys have perfected the art of being wrong.
In a joint filling it was said that “The Commission’s published rules do not prohibit one satellite radio licensee from acquiring control of the other”.
From what I understand the commission can in fact grant a transfer of applications if doing so is in the publics interest.
I am “the public” and I vote that it is in my best interest.
There was a rule established by the FCC at the time the licenses were issued. However, at that point in time the I-pod was not even a thought in the head of Steve Jobs, the Internet was a wonderful place, but speed was slow, MP-3 players were not around, cell phones were used for telephone conversations, HD radio did not exist, etc.
There was a time that the NAB was against FM radio. Times change, and so do rules.
