Jason Ellis a Star Rising
In response to our articles about the lack of a Stern alternative, and the Bubba The Love Sponge show getting slammed, many readers responded with a name that I had heard of but never listened to. The person? Jason Ellis.
Today I made it a point to tune into Sirius Faction (channel 28) at 3:00 PM to get a listen to Jason Ellis. Ellis, Australian born, can only be described with one word. EXTREME. He is also a very busy person. He hosts a show on Sirius faction from 3 to 7, appears on Octane, is working on a reality television show, a movie, has his own band called Taintstick, and is heavily involved in mixed martial arts. With all of this going on in his life, it is no surprise that he puts together an interesting show.
Ellis show is a bit over the top to be what I would term as a Howard Stern alternative, but he would be more than qualified to host a show in the Stern time slot on Friday’s or when the Stern crew is on vacation. Ellis is an entertainer, and that is a quality that is needed if you are going to host a four hour show. While the Jason Ellis show is entertaining, he likely has a core audience that is from a younger demographic than my own. That being said, he kept me immersed in the show, and wanting to hear what would come up next. In radio this is a key element to success, and growing an audience.
Ironically, Ellis is competing head to head with Bubba on Sirius, and it was my article about Bubba being taken to task that enabled me to learn about the Jason Ellis show. Those that commented on the post mentioned Ellis, and seemed to have switched from the Bubba show to Ellis’ show on Faction. Bubba did do a show on Friday mornings for a period of time, but now that he also has a terrestrial morning show, it is a gig that he can no longer perform. It may well be that the terrestrial deal can give Ellis some additional exposure that once would have gone Bubba’s way.
Many Stern fans express frustration at the lack of a live program to air when Stern is off. If Sirius were to try out Ellis in that slot, Bubba could find himself regretting the day that he decided to perform a morning show on terrestrial and an afternoon show on Sirius.
Does Ellis have what it takes to host Friday mornings on Howard 100? In my opinion, based on the show I heard today, he does. In addition, such a move could bolster the entire Sirius faction channel lineup as additional exposure would gravitate there. Make no mistake, Bubba is part of the Stern brand, but he needs to step up his game and deliver. Ellis is young, hungry, and crazy enough to become a radio factor on Sirius.
Position – Long Sirius
Add another to the list of changing the channel on Bubba lately. I enjoyed Ellis’ show before he went to being majority talk and would just say random things between songs. He is very entertaining and if given a chance to fill a Friday here and there, I’d be willing to listen. But lately I find that when I’m tuning off Bubba I’m going over to Jim Breuer, who by the way needs to be given some better quality sound. I think either one could fill a four hour slot very easily.
Ellis is the man, its about time people start to realize that, he has come a long way in the last year and the show is getting better… F Bubba! his show is tired and lame, I made the switch right around the time Ellis moved from nights to afternoon drive. Stern really needs to have him on as a guest he could take over that studio with his antics and crazy stories
Ellis is way more entertaining than Bubba…I love howard but Ellis is a nice relief to the every day routine show of howard…Ellis is the future of radio When howard’s gone..bubba will be gone..Howard is the only reason bubba is still on the air…and that leaves ellis…I can’t wait until that day
Ellis is the man the future! Shaboy YoungWing!
Ellismate is definitely awesome. I’d love it if he could get on Howard 100 sometimes when Howard’s away or on a Friday but I wonder if he would do the same show he does on Faction? He’s said before that he’s not too interested in playing music but if he wasn’t on faction and wanted to, he could probably just play more of his fav music.
I first heard Ellis on the Bubba show and i have been a huge fan since then. IMHO he is far funnier than Bubba. I wish howard would put Jason on in Bubbas slot , got tired of him pretty quick. Ellis definately represents the future of radio and I am sure Howie is paying attention but doesnt want to divert listeners away from his channels.
I’ve been skateboarding for a long time and have been watching Ellis rise through the ranks and really find his groove as an entertainer.
I’m glad Sirius got smart and gave him his own show, it’s been a long time coming.
As for Bubba – he reminds me of Keith Olbermann now. Taking trash on whoever is killing him in the rankings just make sure people don’t forget about his show. First he bashed his own employer, and now that his contract dispute is done, he’s going after Ellis who’s killing him in the ratings.
The best thing about Ellis is his endless amounts of material. Most shows (even Stern to a point) are fairly predictable. Ellis has such diverse interests – drift car racing, MMA, skateboarding, Motocross, music, women, etc, etc, his show never gets old. Not to mention, his unique way he involves listeners to the show (Dude, is it gay? World’s greatest Wednesday’s) He makes you feel like you’re a part of the show. Most other shows, the callers are simply people interrupting the natural flow and are simply punching bags for the host.
It’s only a matter of time before Ellis takes over Bubba’s slot.
YoungWing is simply amazing. I listen to his show everyday here in Ohio and it never gets old. I’ve even called into the show and talked to him and he’s actually a really nice guy. Nothing is better than a sexy Aussie with a great sense of humor and pleasent personality. Plus, where else would I learn how to Reverse Chicken Wing Ball someone? Thanks to Ellis mate I will continue catching loads to my face in his Honor. I love you Jason Ellis.
Red Dragons!!!!!!
I followed Stern to Sirius and recently became bored with the “I’m rich your not” tone of the show. Listening to Bubba in the afternoons has become the same as watching a four hour info-mercial. I had just figured on letting my subscription run out after I found Maxim radio and that entire channel was destroyed with the current lame content. I have started to listen to Ellis and am renewing my sub. because it is a GREAT alternitive to the rest of the talk. Stars too? Put Stretch, Covino and Rich, and Ellis on the same channel and you’ll have a solid line up.
Red Dragons!
Red Dragons; Oreo Cookie Pizza !
Ellis is the best show on Sirius. I still love Stern and always will, but Ellis is fun to listen to.
Agreed. Jason Ellis is doing an excellent job. Aside from Howard, he’s the only other entertainer I listen to on Sirius.
I came to Sirius as soon as I found out Bubba was there. When Bubba was live on Sirius I would say that there was no other show that could compare to his show. Unfortunately now he is just giving his fans a replay of teresterial crap. I listen to satelite radio because I am an adult and I enjoy listening to uncensored programming. When you call in you can let the “F” bombs fly. I understand why Bubba whent to this new format but unfortunately for him I have decided my money is better spent on Jason Ellis. If Bubba went back to an uncensored show where he would shock the puss and every third word was a curse word I would probably go back to his show but now that I am adicted to “Red Dragons” I’m not so sure that I would go back to being a Bubba Army FTE.
For Sirius Bubba will probably bring in more new listeners than Ellis but Ellis is cheaper and will retain the X Bubba Army after Bubba is gone.
Bubba shot himself in the foot, as far as his Sirius show fans are concerned, when he went to this new format. I hope the teresterial money is worth losing what he had in the Sirius world.
If I had to choose today between Jason “Red Dragons” Ellis and Bubba The Love Sponge, I would have to say that Jason gets my respect and my vote.
Jason Ellis has been the only host of any sort who has had me laughing out loud while on my commute. He is very entertaining and keeps me glued to my radio and logging on the listen online. I have referred at least a two dozen people to buy sirius to listen to Jason’s show and more than half now listen to him every chance they get. I can never figure out why sirius/XM do not use him for any promo stuff. He’s the only reason I’m still proud to be a subcriber.
Ellis-Mate is the real deal. I tuned in one day and have been hooked to his show for the past 6 months. He has that crazy/raw humor that any generation can appreciate. If it wasn’t for having an hour commute home and being able to listen to the Jason Ellis show I’d cancel my over-priced Sirius subscription months ago. RED DRAGONS!!!
I agree with C-los, I was going to cancel this year but after hearing The Wing say CARBON FIBER I was hooked!
Jason Ellis is f-ing awesome. along with cow f-er and raw dog. red dragons!
Ellis is so very upcoming he is NOW. He will be the Great Ellismate on Howard one day. Keep up the great work and keep inspiring.
here’s the deal..i loved bubba’s show when he first came to sirius, then came his latest contract where he plays his local show on tape. as i grew tired of the local florida rhetoric, i started to listen to ellis during the many commercial breaks..after a short time, i started to listen to jason full time except for fridays when i listen to bubba during jason’s limited commercial breaks.
RED DRAGONS!!
i think jason ellis on faction is totaly badass and many many more people should hear what this dude has to say weather its fuckin funny or seious! keep it real brothers!
listening to jason ellis on stern was enthralling… a superb raconteur who is not afraid to put one note wonder junkie boy in his place… if only Jason could take artie’s place… for the 1st time in 13 yrs i don’t discuss the show anymore because i don’t want anyone thinking i find a dross, unfunny racist, homophobic, bully like lange to be entertaining… i will be tuning to jason ellis whenever there’s an opportunity to get away from what has sadly become the artie lange show.
I totally agree Artie can be funny,he needs to tone it down, maybe put his new found energy into more exercise instead of running his mouth too much on the show
Jason Ellis was on The Howard Stern Show today. The rest of the world now gets to hear what the skateboarding community had enjoyed for so long.
I’ve been listening now to the Jason Ellis show on Faction for about 5 months now. Jason’s life experience lends itself to radio. His raw talent and communication style goes so well with the community he’s speaking to and beyond. There are no bells and whistles, no fancy vernacular, just Jason. I look forward to listening everyday, even to the Best of…
Red DRAGONS!
Ellis should take bubba’s place. If so, Howard 100 & 101 would dominate all other sattelite channels. Bubba and his show are for trailer trash floridians that understand garbage humor.
Hey Now !! Red Dragons !! = perfect harmony
I totally agree with your thoughts about Bubba & i have NEVER found him remotely entertaining or funny. I live in this wang of a state called Floriduh as a NY transplant, & let me tell you I would much rather hear Jason Ellis any day of the week than Bubba’s boring rants…i cannot even bear to hear him speak for 30 seconds & quickly switch back to Howard 100 when i realize there is no Howard replay on 101.
I know these posts are related to Jason Ellis, but a couple of you have brought up Bubba and his “choice” to do the terrestrial radio. For whatever reason, from how I understood the negotiations, Bubba was pretty much forced into taking the terrestrial spot because Sirius, with the financial hole they had dug themselves, couldn’t offer him a reasonable contract. I just don’t understand how they can give “Mad Dog” Russo 3 million dollars, yet not find the money to give Bubba a contract in which he can channel all of his creative juices to his satellite show instead of the watered down terrestrial version he’s forced to do. Bubba’s show is broadcast in Florida, so he has to gear the content mainly towards that demographic. If he was all satellite, all the time, he could really shoot with both barrels! And back to Jason Ellis, he’s an entertaining guy and tells good stories, but to mention him in the same breath as Bubba, and especially Howard, as far as radio goes, is ludicrous!
I really don’t get Bubba I do not find his show interesting to much local talk about the tampa area,I have just recently found out about Jason Ellis , He’s a little rough around the edges but over time I think he will get better and better,I would much rather listen to Ellis than Bubba anyday.
I had never even heard of Jason until he was on Stern this week & he makes for such great radio–I will definitely tune into his show! Interesting & honest, it made no difference how weird or disturbing the subject matter was. Kudos to you Jason, you just gained a shitload of new admirers!
Ellis is a 1000 times better then Stern and to tell you the truth he dosen’t even want to be compared to or even in the same catagory as stern. His show is with the up and coming, non-judgmental, anything goes… true to life!!!
I heard about jason ellis while listening to the bubba the love sponge show. I switched over to hear what the fuss was about and though rough around the edges I think the show can develope into a solid alternative. Bubba needs to step his game up his show is becoming predictable and boring.
Ellis rocks. I was turned on to him from xm202 the virus. They play a best of Ellis every weekend. I love listening to him and i am hooked even though I am 38 years old, out of his demo. I also love Ron & Fez and O & A.
i think if bubba would stop worring about other radio personalities and go back to the shocking not giving a rats ass about whos winning 25 -30 really a listening audience could give 2 nuts about where your ranked get back to busting balls before you find yourself working for spiz-ice
Ellis does a best of type show on 202/197 on Sat eves, and as far as I can tell, is killing. He makes no bones that he likes both Stern and Opie and Anthony. I think he has the “real thing” quality that Bubba lacks (he can’t shake that morning zoo too cool for the room thing.)Granted he has his audience, even among my demographic (50-60) he has a loyal, if uninformed following. Turning 56 this week. where did the time go???? regards Greg Dinning, Selkirk Mb. Canada
The Jason Ellis show is very entertaining and fun to listen to. Being an avid longtime Stern fan, I would love to hear him on Howard 100/101. Bubba the Love Sponge is horrible, redneck garbage, it is not funny to me at all. As the target radio audience gets older Jason Ellis will become more popular.
I LOVE ELLIS!!!! I have been listing to ellis for over a year and his show is amazing. Its the only reason I pay for sirus otherwise it would be a waste of money! The variety you get when you listen to ellis is great you never know if your going to get a porn star or a great indepth conversation on how to motivate yourself to become a better person, or a history lession on all the old time boxers and their take on the up and coming world of MMA. I love that he is wild enough to make you laugh for hours after the show is over, but can really get you thinking about your own life. This bubba guy is a joke he could never be as versitile as ellis and truthfully Howard should consider it an honor to have him on his channel he deserves it and so much more. I really believe he is the “FUTURE OF RADIO”
Jason is a fool and it makes me sick he is getting my hard earned money. Why even have DJ’s don’t care what they think say or do.
Who is this guy? I have never heard of him. Looks like I could take him in a bare knuckle match.
