The Federal communications Commission has extended the filing deadlines on the Media Ownership Studies (docket 06-121). The new date for comments is October 22nd, and Reply Comments are due November 1st. The media ownership study and hearings have been looking into existing media ownership rules, and whether changes to those rules should be made.
While not related to the merger of Sirius and XM, it is something that quite obviously would be a concern to satellite radio's terrestrial counterparts. The National Association of Broadcasters is lobbying strongly to have existing rules regarding media ownership changed. Public hearings on the matter, like the one in Chicago last week, have had great participation from the public.
While recognizing that undue delay is not good, the FCC felt that requests for extension were reasonable, and thus the time extensions were granted. News of the extension was released on the same day the the NAB Radio Show concluded.
