Howard Stern Joins America’s Got Talent – Rumored $15 Million Deal
Sirius XM morning personality Howard Stern will be the new judge on TV show “America’s Got Talent”. The announcement this morning came from NBC, which Stern has had many issues with in the past, including a firing over 25 years ago from radio station WNBC. Howard, which many view as controversial, will replace Piers Morgan on the judges panel when the show begins season 7 in the summer of 2012.
“Howard Stern’s larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to ‘America’s Got Talent’ starting this summer. He’s a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable. Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future,” said NBC alternative programming chief Paul Telegdy.
The news bodes well for Sirius XM as it will put their biggest name in the limelight with a national audience, giving them added exposure. As it turns out, the deal is also pretty good for Howard who will be making a reported $15 million per year!
Rest assured, the move to prime time television should not affect the quality of his radio show — ‘AGT’ is relocating the entire show from Los Angeles to New York in an effort to accommodate the King of all Media.
i bet this move forces Management to settle regarding Stern’s lawsuit. They will want to keep the King happy, especially now that he will receive national exposure. This was a brilliant move by Stern regarding his lawsuit. Mark it.
I dont see how this move benefits Stern in regards to the lawsuit. In fact, i think it probably helps Sirius more. Howard realized he wasn’t gonna be able to squeeze any more money out of Mel…so he lined up this gig with the tv show.
No matter what, it benefits Sirius just because of all the free advertising they are gonna get.
I agree Regan, this has no benefit to his lawsuit. I kinda think Siriusxm thought they made him happy with his 100 million dollar a year for 3 days a week work. This was a brilliant move to get another 15 million dollars a year. All he has to do is be an asshole to bad performers….Not that hard for him. I think this will build his fanbase. Look what being on National reality tv did for Piers Morgan. This will make him “releavant” again to people who havent listened before.
From the Article- “Rest assured that the move to prime time television should not affect the quality of his radio show”
Of course not,he is barely at Sirius now,Howard has more than enough vacation and days off to cover any schedule NBC could throw at him. And if he needs to he can “make up” days missed like he had to this December. What I loved about the HSS show run today was how people think Howard going on AGT will improve his reputation. He is going on there to be the “Simon” of the show or a “honest judge” his reputation off being a ass will remain intact.
Brilliant move on Howard’s part though,on satellite he can claim all the listeners he wants but he will get more exposure and press from the AGT show than he is getting now.
Actually I think that this may be a huge flop for all concerned. Howard is generally mediocre to terrible during his appearances on other shows like Letterman etc. When he is on the radio a great deal of his being “humourous” is developed over a period of minutes while discussing a topic. During that time much of what Howard says is given to him live on a computer screen by his writers writing in real time. If people are looking for him to be amusing or witty spontaneously in short bursts of less than a minute and a half, I’m afraid they’re going to be disappointed. If they are just looking for someone who looks outrageous but comes off live as much less than his reputation then they might be satisfied. I have listened to him for many years but not too much anymore because he has become predictable and boring while droning on day after day about such “hilarious” things as photography and animal shelters. I want to tune in to get laughs but the show just gives an occasional chuckle now and then as even Howard and his producer say he has “evolved” and is now doing an interview show rather than a comedy show. Count me out.
I don’t disagree as to the decline of the radio show, but as a judge he will do fine. The talent show can write him stuff, like Benji does on his radio show.He has been a judge/critic of people for his whole career. On a talent show like this, really any of us could give an honest CRITICAL opinion,we wouldn’t because we don’t want to be mean.Howard will because he knows, that like Simon Cowell he will be the person America will love to hate.
Perhaps but he’s going to be billed as something that I don’t feel he has ever shown he can deliver in short bursts. He has been horrible in most every appearance away from his show. Another aspect of this “jump the shark moment” is that he will further lose existing listeners to his radio show because he will now go on and on incessantly about AGT. I do think there will be an initial ratings bump for AGT for a little bit but that will recede and Howard will scramble to blame everyone else. It’s his M. O. for everything.
I don’t think he can loose any more listeners. He started the “revolution” by going to 4 days then 3 days a week, playing repeats over and over( a necessary due to so little new shows)and no real programming that was promised on the three channels.(yes 3 channels were initially promised)No,the people left are either hardcore fans,or people like me that occasionally tune in when my other shows have been listened to and I still have more driving to do.in the long run,AGT will do the same ratings perhaps a bit more with Howard,if the advertisers can hang in there with all the controversy.
I disagree. I think Howard is extremely funny on talk shows. He is intelligent, entertaining and not afraid to say controversial things. His radio show is only lacking now in that it airs only 3 days a week.
Howard hasn’t lost it at all in my opinion.
I don’t watch talent shows or much reality tv at all….but I will tune in to watch AGT to see Howard. I think he will be great as a judge. Unlike most, he is genuine and won’t pull any punches. I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for Howard to reach a mainstream audience and turn them onto his talent, sense of humor and quick wit. I think alot of people will be suprised. Howard is no dummy.
And the great thing is that its FREE advertising for Sirius. Better than a SuoerBowl ad. Win win if you ask me.
I don’t disagree about the free benefits for Sirius. I do think though that AGT is going to be little more than a redo of “The Gong Show” with maybe a little less campy or crass attitude. None of the three judges are going to have any professional qualifications to judge any musicians or singers on anything other than a personal subjective basis. Sharon being around Ozzie and metal bands counts little for developing a knowledge of musical/vocal competency. Having said that I guess the juggling acts etc. can be made more prominent on the show. I don’t watch the talent shows just for the above reasons. Listened to Howard for over 20 years and in the last 2 years it has gotten so that I barely bother. I barely bother with Howard TV anymore and will probably drop it too. I guess my critique of Howard I would apply to television in general these days. Perhaps they were destined for each other.
Sirius will get no major bump, because after the first week or two they will stop mentioning Sirius, unless Sirius coughs up some advertising dough.Howard would not have put in his contract that he need to mention Sirius,he is suing them remember?
Agreed. There will be some free benefit for Sirius but I agree no major bump. The time for that impact by Howard sailed by a long time ago. Even the recently closed “fan site” had a fraction of the traffic it had just 2 or 3 years ago. Some went away because of haters but it seems most just lost the desire to hang on to so little compared to what the show had been.
