    Want HD Radio With That?
    By Mark Fleischmann

October 30, 2008 — Wouldn't it be convenient if all satellite radio—meaning Sirius XM—receivers also handled over-the-air HD Radio? A bill in Congress would mandate this pairing. The Federal Communications Commission is also considering it as an outgrowth of its approval for the Sirius XM merger.

On one level, the requirement makes sense. Haven't AM and FM radio been a happy couple for decades? But it also would mean binding a free medium to a subscription medium, something of a precedent setter. It is easy to imagine satellite listeners, having gotten a taste of free digital radio, letting their subscriptions lapse, especially when times are hard.

The National Association of Broadcasters predictably "salutes the leadership" of Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), who introduced the legislation in the House of Representatives. Lining up in support are Clear Channel, public radio, and Ibiquity, developer of HD Radio.

Not so enthusiastic are the satellite broadcasters. Lining up in their support are Toyota and General Motors, which build satellite radios into their cars, but don't favor this "unprecedented requirement regulating the choice of entertainment technologies in an automotive environment."

When it approved the Sirius XM merger, the FCC also approved an open-device requirement for satellite radio. That conceivably could mean accommodating HD Radio, but then again, the extra device could also be internet radio or an iPod dock.

Portable Satellite Player Records 5 Channels At Once
Pioneer's XMp3 can capture over 100 hours of XM and Sirius programming.
    October 30, 2008 | by Rachel Cericola

Sirius XM has thrown a twist into taking satellite radio on the go with Pioneer’s XMp3 player.

Well, it’s actually more like XM. Because even though the company is now one giant entity, the announcement says that the new portable player only works with XM programming, with the option to get the Best of Sirius package. In other words, Sirius subscribers probably won’t want to spend the $280.

However, they might. After all, it doesn’t just allow for portable listening, but it also records—up to five channels at once. It stores 75 hours of programming, and another 30 in an “auto-record” feature for your five favorite channels. So you can keep the classic rock without missing a minute of Oprah & Friends. It also acts like a DVR, storing up to 30 minutes of current live programming, which means you can re-rock out to the same songs, if that’s a necessity.

There’s no word on actual sound quality, which would be the bigger issue. Still, it has plenty of other features including pause, replay, and a micro-SD card slot for additional storage. The unit also comes with XM2go Music Manager software, which should help organize all of that content.

The financing could be announced at the 3Q conference call. I would not be in this stock if I thought it wasn't going to move up in the short term. I would never buy a stock that I thought was going to trade flat or down for a year. The stock is way oversold and has some potentially huge catalysts in the short term horizon......IMHO.
