Trump withholds military aid from Ukraine and then asks the country's President for a "favor": dig up dirt on Joe Biden. CNN political analyst Jeffrey Toobin said today Trump offered a "quid pro quo," money for information. (Trump, of course, is lying and claiming "there was no quid pro quo.") It is an abuse of power, Toobin noted, and is an impeachable offense even if no law was broken. We know what Democrats are saying. Now let's hear from a Republican:

The strongest evidence a prosecuting attorney can present in court is a confession made by the accused. Emperor Trump admitted he withheld military aid from Ukraine and asked Zelensky to dig up dirt on Joe Biden and Hunter Biden. (He also repeated the idiotic – and debunked – conspiracy theory that the DNC's email server from the 2016 election is in Ukraine.) Asking a foreign power for help in winning an election is an impeachable "high crime" – but look what Trump lapdog Mike Pence says: Trump is "completely vindicated." Yeah, okay. George Conway, husband of another Trump lapdog, Kellyanne Conway, believes Senate Republicans will ultimately vote against Trump in an impeachment. I don't see that happening. Republicans will do as they've done for the past three years. They will continue to place Emperor Trump and the Republican party far above the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the rule of law and our nation's system of checks and balances.

Democrats are understandably outraged that Trump asked a foreign leader to dig up dirt on a political rival. That is an abuse of power and a violation of the oath of office. Republicans are outraged, too – but not by Trump's actions. No, they're outraged that he released the rough transcript of the phone call. They wanted him to try to cover it up. Yeah, because covering up worked so well for Richard Nixon.

We all know a whistleblower revealed details of Donald Trump's phone call to Volodymyr Zelensky. Now we're learning about a second whistleblower who presented the House Ways & Means Committee with evidence of Trump's "inappropriate efforts" to influence an IRS audit. Trump never "drained the swamp" as he promised to do. He merely became its Emperor.

The whistleblower's nine-page report was released today. It provides evidence from several witnesses that Trump abused the power of his office to "solicit interference of a foreign country" in the 2020 election. A White House lawyer ordered officials to purge the telephone call transcript from the White House computer system. He obviously knew how damaging it could be.

"Impeachable offense? Experts say yes" is a headline in today's Los Angeles Times. The article quotes University of North Carolina law professor Michael Gerhardt: "Impeachable misconduct entails a President's serious abuse of power and a serious abuse of public trust. Trump's call did both of those things. It was an abuse of power because he used his position to benefit himself and not the country. It was a breach of trust because Americans trust their President to not engage in self-dealing, either through steering businesses to line his own pockets or through conspiring or coordinating with foreign powers to intervene in American elections."

And the orange-skinned parrot continues to squawk: "Hoax! Witch hunt! Hoax! Witch hunt! Awwwrkkk!"

Trump's implicit quid pro quo to Zelensky: Give us dirt on Joe Biden and we'll restore your military aid. Adam Schiff calls it "a classic mafia-like shakedown of a foreign leader." Nancy Pelosi said Trump is "using taxpayer money to shake down other countries for the benefit of his campaign. Either the President does not know the weight of his words or he does not care about ethics or his Constitutional responsibilities." Nancy? I'd say both are true.

Letter from Richard Shafarman of Santa Monica in today's Los Angeles Times:

"I am getting more tired by the day hearing and reading the old canard 'Nobody is above the law.' This President is clearly above the law. As long as the Republican majority in the Senate is willing to go to any length to protect him, the law is something he need not think about. Since descending that elevator in 2015, Trump has lied without restraint but one of his statements was truly spot-on: He could shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue and not lose any of his support."

Four hundred three days till Election Day.

Here is today's telling trio of tweets:

From The New York Times: "Breaking News: President Trump told U.S. diplomats that whoever gave the whistle-blower information was 'close to a spy' and alluded to the punishment for treason."

From Adam Schiff: "The President's suggestion that those involved in the whisteblower complaint should be dealt with as 'we used to do' for 'spies and treason' is a reprehensible invitation to violence against witnesses in our investigation. All Americans must denounce such witness intimidation."

From Emperor Trump: "Adam Schiff has zero credibility. Another fantasy to hurt the Republican Party!" Trump can't defend himself so he resorts to his usual strategy of attacking his critics and trying to discredit them.

Schiff told reporters, "I'm always flattered when I’m attacked by someone of the President's character." My response to that: What character?

Without knowing the identity of the whistleblower, Emperor Trump called him "partisan" and "close to a spy" and suggested the whistleblower committed treason. Emperor Trump may want to rethink his accusations.

New York Times: Whistleblower is CIA officer who worked at White House
    Newsmax, Sep 26 2019 3:01 PM

The whistleblower behind the complaint against President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian telephone call is a CIA officer who once worked at the White House but is now back at the agency, according to a published report today. "Little else is known about him," The New York Times disclosed, citing "three people familiar with his identity."

Lawyers for the whistleblower refused to confirm his identity, telling the newspaper that doing so would be dangerous. "Any decision to report any perceived identifying information of the whistleblower is deeply concerning and reckless, as it can place the individual in harm's way," lead counsel Andrew Bakaj said. "The whistleblower has a right to anonymity."

Rudy Giuliani conspired with Donald Trump to pressure Ukraine's President to dig up damaging information on Joe Biden. The September 24 Washington Post detailed the "shadow Ukraine agenda" Giuliani has been pursuing. NBC News' Mimi Rocah says Giuliani is Trump's personal lawyer, not a government official, and he could be prosecuted for violating the Logan Act, "which makes it a crime for private citizens to attempt to intervene without authorization in disputes between the United States and foreign governments."

CNN reached out to Giuliani for comment. He dismissed the controversy as "crap" and "nonsense" and said he would eventually be viewed as a "hero." Wow. Giuliani seems to have an ego almost as big as Trump's.
