Letter from Theresa Heiney of Murrieta in today's Los Angeles Times:

"Donald Trump's Presidency has shown itself to be corrupt. Now, members of the United States Senate have taken an oath of impartiality in the President's impeachment trial, but it looks as if they wil not hear testimony or compel anyone to testify. A trial like this happens only in dictatorships, where the jury is told what to believe and how to vote. The corruption of the United States government is now on display for the world to see."

And of course Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell told reporters last month that he will not be an impartial juror. He's even been working with Trump's legal team to coordinate defense strategies. This is a travesty of justice – but, as we all know, justice and fairness and ethics and honesty do not exist in Trumpworld. Emperor Trump is above the law and above the Constitution. Heiney's observations are accurate: The United States is now an autocracy.

Emails, phone calls, transcripts and witnesses confirm that Trump, Giuliani, Parnas and Fruman were co-conspirators. Trump broke the law by withholding aid to Ukraine. White House staffers knew that was wrong. Trump sought election interference from a foreign country. Ambassador Yovanovitch was under illegal surveillance and ultimately was ousted. Trump refused to submit subpoenaed documents and refused to allow his aides to testify to investigators. What is amazing is that Trump continues to say his phone call with Zelensky was "perfect," continues to insist he's done nothing wrong and continues to call his impeachment a "hoax" and a "witch hunt." What is sad is that Senate Republicans, who have sold their souls to Donald Trump, will vote for acquittal. Their inviolable policy is: "See no evil in Trump, hear no evil about Trump, speak no evil about Trump" – and he will remain above the law and above the Constitution, answerable to no one. The United States is once again an autocracy. We had King George III 245 years ago. Now we have King Donald the First.

It's starting to appear that almost every Congressional Republican and everyone in the Trump White House knew about the quid-pro-quo offer to Zelensky. They also knew it was wrong. We now know why Senate Republicans will vote for acquittal: If Trump goes down, they'll all go down with him.

Will the Senate be a "fair arbiter of justice"? Of course not. Despite swearing an oath to "do impartial justice to the Constitution and laws," Republicans – who have sold their souls to Donald Trump – will likely vote unanimously for acquittal, ensuring Trump remains above the law and above the Constitution. Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, Rufus King, Gouverneur Morris and William Samuel Johnson never could have imagined the United States of America would someday become an autocracy with a President who regards himself as a king and a dictator.

Democrats file brief against Trump, 'the Framers' worst nightmare'
    The Hill, Jan 18 2020 5:57 PM

House Democrats today unveiled an extensive outline of their legal case heading into the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump, lending a preview of the arguments – both substantial and procedural – underlying the central assertion that the President abused his office and should be removed. In the 111-page brief, Democrats argue that Trump committed high crimes and misdemeanors – charging him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress – and lay out the evidence and legal analysis they intend to present. And while they buckle down on their allegations that Trump is guilty of pressuring a foreign power to investigate a 2020 political rival, they say the only lingering question they have is whether the Senate will be a fair arbiter of justice. Compiled by the seven Democrats serving as impeachment managers, the brief describes the President's conduct as "the Framers' worst nightmare" in arguing that he should be removed from office.

Emperor Trump's lawyers are not disputing the fact that Trump withheld Congressionally-approved military aid and tried to pressure Ukraine to investigate the Bidens. They can't. But they're parroting the two lies Trump keeps saying: He "didn't do anything wrong" and he was just trying to "root out corruption." Yeah, uh-huh. The only "corruption" Trump has ever been concerned with is any that may involve the Bidens. So the lawyers are defending the world's biggest liar by repeating his lies. What a great strategy!

House impeachment manager and Judiciary Committee chairman Jerry Nadler was interviewed today on Face The Nation. "In any trial, all relevant witnesses must be heard," Nadler pointed out. "It's not negotiable whether you have witnesses. This whole controversy about whether there should be witnesses is really a question of does the Senate want to have a fair trial or are they part of the cover-up of the President? Any Republican Senator who says there should be no witnesses or even that witnesses should be negotiated is part of the cover-up." Yes, all witnesses who have not testified before the House – including John Bolton, Mike Duffey, Mick Mulvaney and Lev Parnas – should be called. It is sad for our nation, though, that their testimony would make no difference. Senate Republicans have sold their souls to Donald Trump. Contrary to the oath they took, they will not be impartial jurors. They will vote for acquittal and Emperor Trump will remain above the law and the Constitution.

During Bill Clinton's Presidency, the United States saw record job growth and huge gains in the stock market but the main thing Clinton is remembered for is his impeachment for obstruction of justice and lying under oath. The charges stemmed from Clinton's response to a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Paula Jones and to allegations of sexual improprieties with White House aide Monica Lewinsky. Funny thing, though: Independent counsel Ken Starr led the investigation that resulted in Clinton's impeachment. Starr is now on Trump's legal defense team and says Trump has done nothing impeachable. How about that! Anyway, Trump, same as Clinton, will be largely remembered for his impeachment. That is not going to sit well with the vain, pompous, egotistical, narcissistic blowhard with the galaxy-sized ego. Poor baby!

Emperor Trump's lawyers insist abuse of power is not a "high crime" or a "misdemeanor" and is therefore not an impeachable offense. News flash: Trump has already been impeached for abuse of power. Alexander Hamilton wrote that "the abuse or violation of some public trust" qualifies as "high crimes and misdemeanors." That definitely applies to withholding Congressionally-approved military aid and pressuring a foreign leader to dig up dirt on a political rival, thereby jeopardizing national security and undermining the integrity of our elections. Trump's lawyers, of course, disagree. They, same as Senate Republicans, have sold their souls to Donald Trump. They believe nothing Trump ever does could possibly be wrong – and certainly not impeachable. After all, he's the all-powerful Emperor. He's above the law and above the Constitution. The United States of America has become an autocracy.

Because impeachment is a political process, not a legal process, an offense can be impeachable without being criminal or indictable. A President, Alan Dershowitz said in 1998, can be impeached if he is "somebody who completely corrupts the office of President and who abuses trust." He was referring to Bill Clinton, a Democrat. Now that Dershowitz is defending Emperor Trump, a Republican, he no longer believes what he said in 1998. Dershowitz and all the other sleazy lawyers who are blindly loyal members of the Cult of Donald Trump have sold their souls to King Donald the First and will fight to ensure he remains above the law and above the Constitution, answerable to no one and accountable to no one.

Huge majorities of Democrats, women, blacks and Hispanics want Trump removed from office for his abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Among Republicans, only 8% want him removed. Of course the Republican party has pretty much ceased to exist. It has become the Donald Trump party. He's turned the party into a cult with himself as its leader. Break out the cyanide-laced grape Flavor Aid!
