In a nine-page memo, the seven Democratic impeachment managers noted, "The Framers deliberately drafted a Constitution that allows the Senate to remove Presidents who, like President Trump, abuse their power to cheat in elections, betray our national security and ignore checks and balances." Trump believes he is above the law, they added. Actually, Trump is above the law – and Senate Republicans will ensure he remains above the law, answerable to no one and accountable to no one. All hail King Donald the First!

Senate Democrats want a fair trial that presents all the evidence and allows Bolton, Duffey, Parnas, Giuliani and others to testify. Senate Republicans, all of whom have sold their souls to Donald Trump and swore to be "impartial jurors" even though they know they will not be, want no witnesses and want to get the trial completed as quickly as possible so they can unanimously vote for acquittal and ensure Emperor Trump remains above the law and above the Constitution. Emperor Trump has been extremely erratic, dangerous, deranged and power-mad during the past three years – and he's going to become worse. Much worse. God help us.

Mitch McConnell today is setting the rules for Trump's impeachment trial. He says the process will be "fair" and "even-handed." In truth, he just wants to get the trial over with as quickly as possible so Senate Republicans can unanimously vote for acquittal, preferably before February 4 when Emperor Trump is scheduled to give a State Of The Union address. Adam Schiff foresees the trial as "rigged" and a "cover-up." Chuck Schumer says the rules "seem to be designed by Donald Trump for Donald Trump." Welcome to the autocracy, where Emperor Trump reigns supreme.

From Switzerland today, the orange-skinned Tweeter-In-Chief once again called his impeachment a "total hoax" and once again said, in reference to his phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky, "Read the transcript!" We've all read the transcript, Emperor Trump. It incriminates you. You abused the power of your office by withholding Congressionally-approved military aid and pressuring a foreign country to investigate the Bidens. You violated the Presidential oath of office by putting your own interests above America's interests. You are a disgrace to the office and a disgrace to the United States of America.

Mitch McConnell abruptly eases impeachment limits
The Associated Press, Jan 21 2020 3:00 PM

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell abruptly eased his restrictive proposed rules for President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, backing off the condensed two-day schedule to add a third for opening arguments after protests from Senators, including Republicans. The trial quickly burst into a partisan fight at the Capitol as the President's lawyers opened arguments in support of McConnell's plan. Democrats objected loudly to McConnell's initially proposed rules and some Republicans made their concerns known in private at a GOP lunch. Without comment, the Republican leader quietly submitted an amended proposal after meeting behind closed doors with his Senators. The handwritten changes would add the extra day and allow House evidence to be included in the record. There is still deep disagreement about calling additional witnesses.

It should surprise no one that Mitch McConnell was lying when he promised a "fair" impeachment trial. Here is what happened today:

Democrats wanted to subpoena former national security adviser John Bolton. Every Republican voted no. Democrats wanted to subpoena acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney. Every Republican voted no. Democrats wanted to subpoena OMB official Michael Duffey. Every Republican voted no. Democrats wanted to subpoena White House aide Robert Blair. Every Republican voted no. Democrats wanted to subpoena Ukraine documents from the Department of Defense. Every Republican voted no.

We live in an autocracy ruled by King Donald the First, who is above the law and above the Constitution. He reigns supreme, answerable to no one and accountable to no one. This impeachment trial is a sham. It is not fair. It was rigged from the beginning. Republicans, despite taking an oath to be "impartial jurors," never had the slightest intention of being impartial. They don't want to see evidence and they don't want to hear witnesses. They have sold their souls to Donald Trump and will unanimously vote for acquittal. They would gladly and willingly march through the flames of hell if he asked them to. Donald Trump has destroyed the Republican party, destroyed the Presidency, destroyed the Constitution and pretty much destroyed America. God help us.

A 71% majority of Republicans believe witnesses should be allowed to testify. Republicans in the Senate, however, do not. New witnesses, new documents and new evidence would not matter to them anyway. They will unanimously vote to acquit Emperor Trump and the Republican party will forever be known as the party of obstruction and cover-ups, the party that put King Donald the First above the law and above the Constitution.

Democrats made 11 proposals to subpoena witnesses, transcripts and other documents – and Republicans unanimously said to no to all 11. Each one failed by a vote of 53-47. This is the trial Mitch McConnell sad would be "fair." The entire world sees it for what it is: a compete sham. Senate Republicans, who have sold ther souls to Donald Trump, knew on September 24 – the day the impeachment inquiry was launched – that they would all vote for acquittal. Welcome to the kangaroo court of King Donald the First, the all-powerful autocrat who will forever remain above the law and above the Constitution, answerable to no one and accountable to no one.

Letter from Leslie Stem of Gardena in today's Los Angeles Times:

"The most ridiculous defense offered by Trump's legal team is that impeachment tries to overturn the 'will of the people' in the 2016 election. The Electoral College already did that, rendering the votes of the nearly 2.9 million more Americans who voted for Hillary Clinton over Trump null and void."

And from Jacqueline Kerr of Los Feliz:

"What has happened to the Republican party? The marvelous GOP of Dwight Eisenhower, William Howard Taft and Barry Goldwater? The architects of the conservative American philosophy? They impeached Bill Clinton for lying about an affair but now they support Trump as he attempts to bully Ukraine into digging for dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden. Yes, these are sad and disgraceful days for our once wonderful GOP."

Of course that "once wonderful" Republican party has ceased to exist. It is now the Donald Trump party. Congressional Republicans no longer care about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the rule of law, the Presidential oath of office, our system of checks and balances or our nation's best interests. They have sold their souls to Donald Trump. They live only to serve him, protect him, defend him, exalt him, worship him and do his bidding. Can you say "false god"? I knew you could.

If Trump was truly serious about fighting "corruption," he would fire his entire White House staff and all his Cabinet members and then resign from office.

Schiff highlights new discrepancy in Trump's justification for freezing military aid to Ukraine
Business Insider, Jan 22 2020 5:15 PM ET

Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff today ripped into President Donald Trump's "assortment of shifting explanations" for freezing roughly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine. During the first day of opening arguments in Trump's Senate impeachment trial, Schiff pointed out a new discrepancy in the president's justifications for the aid freeze. Trump said he withheld the money because of corruption in Ukraine. He also said he was concerned about burden-sharing with other European countries. These talking points have been undermined in numerous ways but Schiff also highlighted the fact Trump never publicly championed his purported reasons for withholding the aid. "Why wouldn't he? Because of course it wasn't true," Schiff said.

Emperor Trump said Article II gives him the right to do whatever he wants as President. Emperor Trump asked Russia to locate Hillary Clinton's emails. Emperor Trump said if a foreign power offered dirt on a political opponent, he'd want to hear it. Emperor Trump tried to pressure Ukraine into investigating the Bidens. Emperor Trump also said China should investigate the Bidens. Senate Republicans, who have sold their souls to Donald Trump, refuse to allow witnesses at the impeachment trial – but Democrats may not need witnesses. They have videos of Trump incriminating himself with his own words. Unfortunately for our nation, Senate Republicans made up their minds long ago to ignore the overwhelming evidence that Trump abused his power and obstructed Congress. The orange-skinned leader of the Cult of Donald Trump knows his brainwashed, blindly loyal cult members in the Senate will ensure that he remains above the law and above the Constitution, answerable to no one and accountable to no one.
