President Trump wants to slap a 5% tariff on all goods imported by Mexico. As is the case with the tariffs on Chinese goods, Americans would be paying for them. Not the Chinese. Not the Mexicans. Americans. The 5% tariff would take effect June 10 and rise an additional 5% each month, up to 25%. Among the many American businesses that would be hurt by these tariffs is Chipotle Mexican Grill. Today, after Chipotle's CFO warned that the tariffs would lead to higher costs and higher prices, the company's share price fell sharply, from 659.97 to 641.66, a loss of 2.77%. Shares dropped to 639.00 after hours, an additional 0.41% loss.

Chipotle says Mexican tariffs could boost costs by $15 million in 2019, possibly forcing price increases

Step 1: Buy rival company and take on $200,000,000 in debt. Step 2: Sell rival company to erase $95,000,000 of the debt. Yeah, this is probably not a good business model to follow.

Several studies have linked the wearing of high-heeled shoes to heel pain, ankle pain, blisters, bunions, knee osteoarthritis, ingrown toenails and plantar fasciitis. (And why are high-heeled shoes pointy when women's feet aren't pointy?) In Japan, the government has no plans to change a rule allowing employers to require female employees to wear high heels. なぜでしょうか? これはおかしいです!

Mattel has $2.85 billion in long-term debt. This week, Mattel shares are hovering around $11 after hitting a five-year high of 39.79 in July 2014. Sales of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars are declining. Will a 45-year-old Japanese kitty with no mouth be able to reverse Mattel's slump? それは可能だと思う.

Early this morning, Fiat withdrew its bid to merge with Renault. Financial Times quotes an unnamed "person briefed on the matter" as saying the bid was withdrawn because the French government and unions were "doubtful" about Fiat's reassurances that no jobs would be lost. I'm doubtful that is the real reason.

In May, 27,000 jobs were added – but 3,000 manufacturing jobs and 36,000 construction jobs were cut. Trump will surely tout the first statistic while ignoring the other two.
