Our nation's latest school shooting has left two students dead. The shooter, who had posted an ominous message on Instagram yesterday – "Saugus, have fun at school tomorrow" – is in "grave condition" after shooting himself in the head. He should have done that first.

Senator was handed note about California shooting while delivering a speech on gun violence
    AOL News, Nov 14 2019 3:23 PM

Senator Richard Blumenthal was delivering a speech on the Senate floor about gun violence when he was handed a note telling him that as he spoke, yet another school shooting was happening in California. After Republican Senators blocked a vote on universal background checks, Blumenthal took to the floor to speak on the importance of background checks. In a video posted on Twitter, an aide is seen passing him a note to inform him of the shooting at Saugus High School. "As I was on the Senate floor speaking about the need for universal background checks — after Rs [Republicans] blocked a vote today — I heard this devastating news. To the victims & families, we can't take back the loss & fear you're feeling but we'll keep fighting to end this epidemic of violence," Blumenthal wrote on Twitter.

I saw on the news that there have been 46 school shootings this year. Schools should have guards to inspect backpacks before they let kids enter the schoolyard. That boy should not have been able to bring a gun to school.

I saw that on CNN. In the first 11 months of this year, there have been 32 shootings at elementary schools, middle schools and high schools and 14 shootings at colleges and universities. Because schools conduct "active shooter" drills, students know what to do if someone starts shooting – and it's a sad statement about America that such drills have become necessary. Security personnel inspect purses and backpacks of people entering a ballpark, sports arena, fair, concert, airport terminal, courthouse or theme park. If they're not already searching backpacks of school students, they need to start. Now – before any more students are gunned down.

I guess if a kid plans on someday committing a mass shooting at a school, he has to start practicing on a small scale when he's young.

After shooting five classmates, two fatally, Nathaniel Berhow used his last bullet to shoot himself in the head. His condition has now been downgraded from "grave" to "critical." That's fine with me.

The Saugus High School shooter has died. No manifesto, diary or suicide note has been found, his motive remains unknown and investigators have not yet determined where he got the .45-caliber pistol he used.

Children aren't safe at school. Many times, they aren't even safe in their own home. The United States of America is truly "the land of the guns – and the home of the shootings."

Letter from Brian Lipson of Beverly Hills in today's Los Angeles Times:

"Can someone please tell me to which 'well-regulated militia' the Saugus High School shooter belonged? And why were the killing of two classmates and the wounding of three others 'necessary to the security of a free state'? Those who vehemently insist on defending the final 14 words of the 2nd Amendment should pay a little more attention to the first 13 words."

    Amen!
