Senator John McCain dies at 81

Two of my favorite quotes from John McCain: "Courage is not the absence of fear but the capacity to act despite our fears." "Glory belongs to the act of being constant to something greater than yourself, to a cause, to your principles, to the people on whom you rely and who rely on you." McCain faithfully served the United States of America for 60 years. Requiescat in pace, Senator.

John McCain, Arizona Senator, dies at 81
The Associated Press, Aug 25 2018 5:22 PM

John McCain, the six-term Arizona senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee, died today at his Arizona ranch after a battle with brain cancer. He was 81. McCain had recently decided to discontinue medical treatment. The senator had been away from the Capitol since December. Republican Arizona Governor Doug Ducey is expected to name a replacement who would serve out the remainder of McCain's term through the 2020 election.

The son and grandson of Navy admirals, McCain was a former Navy pilot and was held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for more than five years. He was elected to Congress in the early 1980s and elected to the Senate in 1986, replacing Barry Goldwater who retired. McCain gained a reputation as a lawmaker who was willing to stick to his convictions rather than go along with party leaders.

McCain underwent surgery in July 2017 to remove a blood clot in his brain after being diagnosed with an aggressive tumor called a glioblastoma. It's the same type of tumor that killed Senator Edward Kennedy at age 77 in 2009. McCain rebounded quickly, however, returning to Washington and entering the Senate in late July to a standing ovation from his colleagues. McCain's condition worsened last fall and he had been in Arizona since December.

McCain ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, then won it in 2008 before losing the general election to Obama. He returned to the Senate, determined not to be defined by a failed presidential campaign in which his reputation as a maverick had faded. When Republicans took control of the Senate in 2015, McCain, the scion in a decorated military family, embraced his new influence as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, pushing for aggressive US military intervention overseas and eager to contribute to "defeating the forces of radical Islam that want to destroy America."

Asked how he wanted to be remembered, McCain said simply: "That I made a major contribution to the defense of the nation."

John McCain's father and grandfather, both of whom were four-star admirals in the US Navy, are buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. John will be buried in the cemetery at the Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1958.

The name of one other President is conspicuous by its absence.

Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Mike Pence, Lindsey Graham, Theresa May, Scott Morrison and dozens of other political figures expressed their respect and admiration for John McCain but the President of the United States couldn't be bothered. This is from The Washington Post:

"President Trump nixed issuing a statement praising the heroism and life of Senator John McCain, telling senior aides he preferred to issue a tweet before posting one Saturday night that did not include any kind words for the Arizona Republican."

When a sitting Senator dies, it is customary for the President to issue a proclamation anouncing the death and directing that flags on government buildings be flown at half staff through the day of interment. We now have a President who does not follow any customs -- unless they're self-serving. Trump issued no such proclamation.

Donald Trump always lashes out at his critics and seldom lets criticism influence his decisions. Today is a rare exception. He did not like John McCain, who died August 25, but his decision to issue no proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half staff was met with a lot of criticism. Trump, albeit grudgingly, finally issued the proclamation this afternoon.

George W. Bush and Barack Obama, invited to speak today at John McCain's memorial service at Washington National Cathedral, praised his courage, his decency, his loyalty and his patriotism. Donald Trump, who was not invited and was not welcome, spent the day playing golf.
