Seventeen lives could have been saved. In a press release today, the FBI admitted its failure to investigate Nikolas Cruz after a caller to their tipline on January 5 reported Cruz's gun ownership, erratic behavior, social media posts and "desire to kill people." The blood of those students is now on the FBI's hands.

The Tonight Show host Jimmy Kimmel last night expressed his anger toward politicians who offer meaningless "thoughts and prayers" speeches following mass shootings but never take any action to prevent mass shootings. He asked why a teenager with mental problems should be allowed to have an AR-15. He showed clips of various Republican leaders responding the same way to different mass shootings: "We don't want to politicize this. Now is not the time to discuss gun legislation." Kimmel said if Congress will not act, they should be voted out of office. He urged his viewers to go to everytown.org and join the fight against gun violence.

I agree with the proposals expressed by Steve Roberts of North Hollywood in a letter published in today's Los Angeles Times:
"Enough. That's it. Time to say clearly that a civilized society does not need to have its citizens massacred by a 227-year-old edict. Get the guns out of private hands and to the well-ordered militia called the police force. That's it. Enough. Take the guns away. Remove the right and make it a privilege. Amend that amendment."
Wednesday's Florida massacre was the 25th deadly school shooting since the Columbine massacre in 1999. Today in a tweet, former President Barack Obama is calling for "common-sense" gun laws -- but, unfortunately, Republicans do the NRA's bidding. I doubt anything will change until we get a Democratic President and a Democratic-controlled Congress.

At 10 AM March 14, high-school students, teachers and parents nationwide will stage a walkout lasting 17 minutes, equal to the number of people killed February 14 in Parkland, Florida. Another walkout will take place April 20 on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre. Students are tired of the "thoughts and prayers" speeches. They want Congress to take action now to prevent more school shootings.

I fear nothing will change until (a) the Republicans and the NRA start placing more importance on the right to life than on the right to own guns, (b) automatic and semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity ammo magazines are banned, and (c) the original intent of the 2nd Amendment is reinstated: arms are to be borne by members of a "well-regulated militia," not by every human being in America. Sadly, I don't see any of those things happening in my lifetime.

In his response to the February 14 Florida school massacre, Trump said "mental health issues" need to be addressed -- and, of course, he offered no concrete ideas, proposals or suggestions, nor did he say anything about the other issue that needs to be addressed: the easy availability of guns and assault weapons.

A Democratic Congressman has blasted President Trump’s response to the recent mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida school, labeling him a "psychopath." Arizona Representative Ruben Gallego tweeted to the president Saturday night, "You are such a psychopath that you have to make even the death of 17 children about you. America will regret the day you were ever born."
His message was a direct response to Trump’s tweet on Saturday: "Very sad that the FBI missed all of the many signals sent out by the Florida school shooter. This is not acceptable. They are spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign. There is no collusion. Get back to the basics and make us all proud!" While some have viewed Trump’s comment as a way to deflect from an outcry for tougher gun restrictions, the FBI has admitted to failing to investigate the alleged shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, despite receiving concerning tips about him. The teen is said to have exhibited violent behavior in the past and expressed a desire to kill people.

Sounding serious about gun-control legislation is not the same as being serious about gun-control legislation. But maybe Congress will finally quit kowtowing to the NRA and finally do something. We're all sick of these school shootings!

The change in tune came after the February 14 high school shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead. Even conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh came out in favor of some gun regulation.

The gun store where Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz legally bought his AR-15 rifle closed down for good Friday, with the former owners now being in favor for more restrictive gun control legislation. A lawyer for the couple who used to own Sunrise Tactical Supplies released a statement on their behalf, saying they were "shocked and mortified" after the shooting and they "condemn in the strongest possible fashion anyone who uses any weapon in anger and violence."
The couple is also throwing support behind measures that would require those with mental illness to disclose their disorder to agencies that govern gun sales. Cruz had answered "no" to questions dealing with mental health issues on his ATF paperwork and there was no proper way of evaluating his full state of mental health.

The students hope to shame the NRA for our nation's gun culture. They hope to shame the Republican Congressmen who accept donations from the NRA and do the NRA's bidding. I don't think the NRA and the Republicans have any shame.....but I'm proud of the students, regardless.
