Seventeen dead in Florida school shooting

In 2007 at Virginia Tech, a gunman killed 32 people and then committed suicide. In December 2012, a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut killed 20 children and six adults and then committed suicide. In the years 2000 through 2017, school shootings have killed 227 people and injured 278.

And here we are in 2018. The school shootings continue and Congress does nothing except to offer "thoughts and prayers" for the victims. There are an estimated 300,000,000 guns in the United States and the NRA -- and the Republicans whom they own -- fight any proposed legislation which might restrict gun ownership and curb the escalating spread of gun violence. Schools are not safe. Churches are not safe. Restaurants are not safe. Shopping malls are not safe. Workplaces are not safe. No place in America is safe.

Today's school shooting is the third-deadliest in American history. Several students told reporters the gunman had a lot of disciplinary problems and often bragged about owning guns. Many students avoided him.

Seventeen dead, 14 injured in Florida school shooting
    CNN, Feb 14 2018 6:22 PM ET

Seventeen people were killed today and 14 injured in a high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. The suspect, 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz, is in custody. The sheriff said Cruz was expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons. Law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shortly before 3 PM. The shooting sent students and staff streaming out of the school in a panic. Some students said a fire drill earlier in the day added to the confusion.

Immediately after the shooting, aerial footage from CNN affiliate WSVN showed people lying on the ground outside the school, being treated for injuries and moved to ambulances. Freshman Kayden Hanafi said he heard two gunshots and saw people running out of another building on campus. As he and his classmates went into lockdown in a classroom, many thought the noise might have been firecrackers. "It's really a blessing to still be alive," he said. Nicole Baltzer, 18, told CNN she was in trigonometry class about 10 minutes before the end of the school day when the fire alarm went off. As students evacuated, she heard six gunshots and everyone started running back inside the school. A police officer told her to close her eyes as she walked past a classroom with broken glass, telling her "there's nothing good to see in there."

Parkland, with a population of 31,000 people in 2016, was named Florida's safest city last year, according to an analysis by the Washington-based National Council for Home Safety and Security, a home security industry trade association.

The gunman is talking to police. CNN is reporting that he was wearing a gas mask and carrying smoke grenades when he entered the school. He set off the fire alarm so students would exit the classrooms. Then he started gunning them down with an AR-15 assault weapon. Why do we allow anyone who is not in the military to own an AR-15? Our gun laws need to change before any more students are shot and killed.

On the news they showed a cellphone video that one of the students made. They were all hiding under the desks and everyone was screaming and the gunshots just kept coming. The shots were really loud. Very scary. I agree that people should not be allowed to have assault weapons.

CNN says the gunman's Facebook page had a lot of pictures of him with his guns. Nine months ago he wrote, "I'm going to kill police officers because they kill good people." Six months ago he wrote, "I am going to kill them sheep," presumably a reference to school students. And nobody was alarmed? Nobody reported these posts to the police?

One of the dead is a teacher who shielded his students from the gunfire. He was hit and bled to death before paramedics could get to him. None of the names of the victims have been released yet -- but whoever that teacher was, he is a hero.

The problem is twofold: Our nation has many thousands of angry hateful psychotic people -- and the angry hateful psychotic people who want to go on a shooting spree never have any problem getting assault weapons. But I agree with Senator Murphy: By not being part of the solution, Congress has become part of the problem.

Senator Chris Murphy: Mass shootings are Congress' fault
    HuffPost US, Feb 14 2018 9:25 PM

Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy addressed his colleagues today after a shooter opened fire at a South Florida high school, leaving at least 17 people dead. Murphy, a fierce gun control advocate who had just been elected to the Senate when the Sandy Hook massacre took place in his home state, blamed congressional inaction for the events that unfolded in Parkland. "This happens nowhere else other than the United States of America," he said. "This epidemic of mass slaughter, this scourge of school shooting after school shooting, it only happens here not because of coincidence, not because of bad luck, but as a consequence of our inaction. We are responsible for a level of mass atrocity that happens in this country with zero parallel anywhere else."

Since 20 students and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, were killed in December 2012, Murphy has dedicated his legislative career to fighting for gun control. Congress has failed to pass any gun control reforms since Sandy Hook but Murphy continues to push the issue.

According to the organization Everytown For Gun Safety, today's shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead is the 291st school shooting since 2013 in the United States -- an average of almost one per week. Their website asks, "How many more before our leaders pass common-sense laws to prevent gun violence and save lives? Communities all over the country live in fear of gun violence. That’s unacceptable. We should feel secure in sending our children to school -- comforted by the knowledge that they’re safe."

You know gun violence in the United States has gotten really really bad when Republicans start considering gun control legislation. Florida Governor Rick Scott will meet with state leaders next week to discuss potential legislation. Today at a news conference he said, "The violence has to stop. We cannot lose another child in this country to violence in a school. If someone is mentally ill, he should not have access to a gun. None of us want anything like this to happen again."

Last September a YouTube user, Ben Bennight, saw a video posted by Nikolas Cruz, who announced, "I'm going to be a professional school shooter." Bennight told CNN today, "I called the FBI but nothing ever came of it."

And now 17 more students are dead.

What has our world come to when a teenager would do something like this as a "joke"?

Student arrested after posting Snapchat threatening 'Round 2' of Florida shooting 'tomorrow'
    AOL News, Feb 15 2018 3:42 PM

A South Carolina student was arrested today after posting a Snapchat threatening a repeat of Wednesday's deadly mass shooting, which took place at a Florida high school. Spartanburg School District spokesperson Sherri Horton said officials received an anonymous tip about the threat, which was made via Snapchat, from the parent of another student at Broome High School. The alarming photo shows an unnamed ninth-grade boy wearing a partial face mask and holding what appears to be an assault rifle with the caption "Round 2 of Florida tomorrow."

The parent of the child who received the concerning snap alerted police and identified the student featured in the photo to responding deputies. After authorities went to the suspect's house, he told them the post was "just intended as a joke and that he didn’t have any serious intentions," according to Lt. Kevin Bobo. Deputies found both the mask and the weapon, which turned out to be a pellet gun. The suspect, whose name will not be released due to his age, was charged with disturbing schools and transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice facility in Greenville.

The 18-year-old had a semi-automatic rifle and a journal detailing his plans to kill as many people as he could at his high school. Crazy hate-filled people never have any trouble getting guns. That needs to change.
