CNN has published an essay by Arctic National Wildlife Refuge defender Bernadette Demientieff, who says Alaska is "ground zero for climate change" and is "warming twice as fast as the rest of the world." Trump and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke are planning to open up the coastal plain to oil and gas drilling in 2019. Demientieff writes, "With climate change already threatening our communities, drilling in the Arctic Refuge is the last thing we need. If developed, the oil projected to be in the coastal plain would create the climate emissions equivalent to 898 coal plants or 776 million cars, adding to the problem of climate change when we should be moving in exactly the opposite direction." But what do Trump and Zinke care?

This news is not surprising. The President of the United States believes climate change is a hoax and refuses to accept the 2018 Climate Assessment which incorporated the research of 1,000 scientists. Now let's hurry up and get those West Virginia coal miners back to work and start drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!

As the increasingly dire, highly-detailed warnings about the effects of climate change grow louder, I picture our President with his fingers in his ears, shouting, "La la la la la, I can't hear you, la la la la la."

Sir David Attenborough: Climate change is 'our greatest threat'
    BBC News, Dec 3 2018

Sir David Attenborough said today climate change is humanity's greatest threat in thousands of years. The naturalist and broadcaster was speaking at the opening ceremony of United Nations-sponsored climate talks in Katowice, Poland. The 12-day conference, called COP24, is the most critical on climate change since the 2015 Paris agreement.

Sir David said: "Right now, we are facing a man-made disaster of global scale. Our greatest threat in thousands of years. Climate change. If we don't take action, the collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon."

Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, said climate change is already "a matter of life and death" for many countries. He explained that the world is "nowhere near where it needs to be" on the transition to a low-carbon economy. The World Bank has announced $200 billion in funding over five years to support countries taking action against climate change.

Although the US has withdrawn from the Paris agreement, it cannot leave until 2020, so its negotiators have been taking part in meetings and have not obstructed the process. America is expected to participate in COP24. However, given the President's well known love of coal, it has been reported that the White House will once again organise a side event promoting fossil fuels. A similar event at the last COP provoked outrage from many delegates.

As the expression goes, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem," and Trump is ignorantly and recklessly exacerbating the problem of climate change. In August, the EPA announced that the easing of pollution rules for coal-fired power plants will lead to as many as 1,400 premature deaths annually. Trump doesn't care. By God, we've gotta get those West Virginia coal miners back to work!

Americans are committed to fighting global warming even though the President of the United States refuses to see global warming as a threat.....and refuses to even acknowledge that it's real.

US backers of Paris accord set up camp at climate talks
    CBS News, Dec 7 2018 5:13 PM

Hundreds of US cities, states, businesses and churches planted the American flag at the UN climate talks today in Katowice, Poland, in an effort to show that many people in the United States remain committed to curbing global warming despite the stance of their president.

The opening of the US Climate Action Center alongside pavilions from Britain, Poland and New Zealand contrasts with the low-key presence of the official US government delegation at the two weeks of talks in Poland. Envoys from the administration of President Trump, who has announced a US withdrawal from the landmark 2015 Paris climate change accord, are holed up in a cubicle away from the main concourse. They have one public event planned Monday promoting US technological innovations.

The Climate Action Center is backed by a group called We Are Still In that wants to maintain the Paris climate deal's aim of keeping global warming well below 2° Celsius (3.6° Fahrenheit). A report from the federal government last month said Earth's climate is now changing faster than at any point in the history of modern civilization, primarily as a result of human activities. The National Climate Assessment warned that extreme weather and climate-related events in America are worsening.

Trump admitted he didn't read the 2018 National Climate Assessment. Apparently nobody at the EPA read it either. Legislation was signed today which will allow the coal industry to spew more carbon dioxide into the air we breathe. Trump and the EPA are probably celebrating the legislation by partying like it's 1820. Now let's get those coal miners back to work!

I bet if Santa Claus leaves a lump of coal in Donald Trump's Christmas stocking, Trump will exclaim, "Oh boy, it's just what I wanted!"

US undermining 'last chance' climate talks, experts charge
    CNN, Dec 10 2018 5:18 PM ET

The American delegation came to promote coal -- and the kids laughed in their faces. That was the bizarre and symbolic scene that unfolded today at the United Nations COP24 climate talks at a conference center in Polish coal country. The nations of the world are meeting here to hash out a "rulebook" to help ensure the viability of humanity -- preventing runaway global warming from causing even greater calamity in the form of superstorms, searing droughts and deadly heat waves.

That work, which follows up on the 2015 Paris Agreement, is seen as more critical now than ever. A damning report from the UN this fall said there's only about a decade left to avoid the worst of climate change. The message: cut fossil fuel pollution to "net zero" in just a few decades. Yet the United States held a discussion on today that was meant, among other things, to "showcase ways to use fossil fuels as cleanly and efficiently as possible."

Dozens of protestors erupted in mock laughter as Preston Wells Griffith, an official at the US Department of Energy, spoke about how fossil fuels "will continue to play a role" in the global energy picture. They temporarily stopped the US-led discussion, shouting, "Shame on you!" and "Keep it in the ground!", a reference to fossil fuels that they say should be left in the earth. Jesse Bragg, spokesman for the nonprofit group Corporate Accountability, said, "It feels like the US is saying to the rest of the world, 'We've got coal and coal technology; come buy it from us.'They're not here to negotiate a treaty. They're here to sell fossil fuels."

Scientists have determined that "warming of the climate through human-induced climate change" increased the likelihood and severity of last year's heat waves, droughts and floods. The AMS report was published today and can be downloaded via the link below.

Global warming is causing oceans of problems -- literally.

Climate change may be dissolving the ocean floor
    Daily Press, Dec 11 2018

New research shows that high levels of carbon dioxide are making some seafloors more acidic. Parts of the North Atlantic and Southern Oceans have a chalky white mineral, calcite, that makes up the seafloor. It is dissolving.

Over the past 30 years, the oldest and thickest ice in the Arctic has shrunk by 95%, a loss of more than 10 trillion tons of ice. It is possible that eventually there will be no ice in the Arctic. I hope moose, caribous, polar bears, Arctic foxes and snowshoe hares are good swimmers.

The Arctic is in even worse shape than you realize
