Older Republican politicians don't want to take any action to fight climate change (or gun violence, either). Younger Republicans, however, are working to find solutions to climate change (and gun violence, too) -- and many of them are abandoning the Republican party and becoming Democrats. These young people are our hope and our future.

Arctic temperatures are at an all-time high and the amount of sea ice is at an all-time low. Does anyone besides Donald Trump and Scott Pruitt still doubt the earth is getting hotter?

On immigration, on gun violence, on climate change and on many other issues, today's young people are taking action where Congress will not. Good for them!

The former Governor says the oil companies are contributing to global warming and thus are guilty of "first-degree murder." Good luck with the lawsuit, Ah-nold!

Leaving lights off for an hour accomplishes about as much as tying ribbons around trees and putting bumper stickers on cars. In other words, nothing. The Nature Conservancy has a list of steps we can take to fight climate change:

Lights around the world go dark for Earth Hour to highlight climate change
The Associated Press, Mar 24 2018 3:40 PM

In Paris, the Eiffel Tower went dark. In London, a kaleidoscope of famous sites switched off their lights — Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, the London Eye. That scene was repeated over and over across the world Saturday night: at Sydney's Opera House, at New Delhi's great arch, at Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, at St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.

It lasted for just an hour and its power is purely symbolic. But in countries around the world, at 8:30 PM, people were switching off their lights for Earth Hour, a global call for international unity on the importance of addressing climate change. Since beginning in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has spread to more than 180 countries, with tens of millions of people joining in, from turning off their own porch lights to letting grand sites like the Opera House go dark.

This news is not surprising. Trump doesn't care about the environment and he doesn't care about California. The federal Clean Air Act was passed in 1990 but 13 states, including California, have wisely set their own fuel efficiency and/or clean air standards

EPA poised to scrap fuel economy targets that are key to curbing global warming — setting up clash with California

The message I get from this gloomy report is "Breathing can be hazardous to your health" -- and it's mostly because of global warming.

Nearly half of Americans breathe dirty air, report finds
    CBS News, Apr 18 2018 11:27 AM

More than two of every five Americans reside in counties with unhealthy levels of smog and air pollution, thanks largely to the effect of global warming, health researchers report. Ozone levels spiked in the United States in 2016, which was the nation's second-hottest year on record, according to the American Lung Association's annual State Of The Air report, released today. "As heat increases, ozone forms more rapidly so we had more cities with more ozone days," said report author Janice Nolen. "We saw a lot of evidence in 2016 of the impact that climate change and global warming is going to have on us."

The report also noted a number of Trump-led efforts that could lead to worse air quality, including legislation to weaken the Clean Air Act, repealing plans to reduce carbon pollution from power plants, removing limits on emissions from oil and gas operations, and opening the door for dirtier emissions from trucks and cars. "We need to keep the Clean Air Act strong and attempts to weaken it are definitely going to cause health effects," said Dr. Christy Sadreameli, an assistant professor of pediatric pulmonology with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. "Peeling back regulations that will increase pollution is very scary to us."

In 2015, 176 countries signed the Paris climate agreement and agreed to work together to limit global warming to 2° Celsius above the average pre-industrial global temperature. The ultimate goal is to limit temperature rise to 1.5°. A new study finds that a difference of ½° could mean life or death for many species of animals, birds and insects because rising temperatures affect their breeding and migration patterns and shrinks their geographical range. The study also looked at what would happen if temperatures rose by 3°. The projections are truly scary!

A little extra global warming will mean a lot more habitat loss for plants and animals, study says

We have a President who has been gutting clean-air and clean-water regulations, who wants to reduce vehicle mileage standards, who wants to allow drilling and mining in national parklands, who wants to return the US to a dependence on coal, who believes global warming is a hoax and who pulled the US out of the Paris climate accord. He continually spews a lot of hot air -- pun intended.

Internal memo suggested that White House 'ignore' federal scientists' climate research
The Washington Post, May 23 2018 11:55 AM

White House officials last year weighed whether to simply "ignore" climate studies produced by government scientists or to instead develop "a coherent, fact-based message about climate science," according to a memo obtained by the Washington Post. The document, drafted September 18 by Michael Catanzaro, President Trump's special assistant for domestic energy and environmental policy at the time, highlights the dilemma the administration has faced over climate change since Trump took office. Even as Trump's deputies have worked methodically to uproot policies aimed at curbing the nation's carbon output, the administration's agencies continue to produce reports showing that climate change is happening, is human-driven and is a threat to the United States.

This story fits right in with the above story. Trump and his Republican lackeys, including Scott Pruitt, do not care about climate change, rising seas, clean air, clean water, MPG standards, national parklands or any other environmental concerns. If Democrats can regain control of the House and Senate this November, much of the potential damage to our environment can be forestalled or halted.

Emails show senior EPA officials cooperated with climate-change deniers to push anti-environmentalism, boost Scott Pruitt's image
The Associated Press, May 31 2018 6:50 PM

Newly released emails show senior Environmental Protection Agency officials working closely with a conservative group that dismisses climate change to rally like-minded people for public hearings on science and global warming, counter negative news coverage and tout Administrator Scott Pruitt's stewardship of the agency.

John Konkus, EPA's deputy associate administrator for public affairs, repeatedly reached out to senior staffers at the Heartland Institute in 2017, seeking suggestions on scientists and economists the EPA could invite to an annual public hearing on the agency's science standards. Konkus and the Heartland Institute mustered scores of potential invitees known for rejecting scientific warnings of man-made climate-change, including from groups such as Plants Need CO2, The Right Climate Stuff, and Junk Science. The public hearing ultimately was canceled.

The emails underscore how Pruitt and senior agency officials have sought to surround themselves with people who share their vision of curbing environmental regulation and enforcement, leading to complaints from environmentalists that he is ignoring the conclusions of the majority of scientists in and out of his agency, especially when it comes to climate-changing carbon emissions.
