Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs says Donald Trump, who "blithely disregards scientific findings about climate change," should be held accountable for failing to protect the public. He writes, "Trump and his minions are the loyal servants of the fossil-fuel industry which fills Republican Party campaign coffers."

Opinion: Trump's failure to fight climate change is a crime against humanity

One of the issues discussed during this past weekend's G-6 summit was climate change. It should have been a G-7 discussion but Trump chose to be absent. Donald Trump loves money almost as much as he loves Donad Trump and he's not about to let the United States spend any money to combat climate change. And anyway, Trump knows climate change is a hoax, no matter how many thousands of scientific studies say otherwise, no matter how many hundreds of people die from excessive heat, no matter how many glaciers and icebergs melt and no matter how many thousands of high-temperature records have been set in the last decade. Wecome to Trumpworld.

The greenhouse gas that contributes most to global warming is carbon dioxide. Methane is a close second. We have a President who believes global warming is a "hoax" – so why should he care about greenhouse gas emissions?

I'm thinking that if we saved all the billions of shipping cartons used by Amazon since 1994 and taped them together, we could make enough giant sunshades to keep the earth from getting any warmer.

Nearly 1,000 Amazon employees plan a walkout September 20 to protest climate change
The collective known as "Amazon Employees For Climate Justice" will walk out in protest of what they say is their company's inaction on climate change.

The five hottest years ever recorded are 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Arctic sea ice is melting, Antarctic sea ice is melting, ocean temperatures are rising – and the number of global-warming deniers is shrinking.

Sea levels are projected to rise 3 feet within 80 years, according to a new UN report. Hundreds of millions of people could be displaced.

Here is an analysis of a new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It echoes the findings of the UN report cited above.

"Look, I don't care about all the thousands of scientific studies showing earth's temperatures are steadily increasing, okay? Melting glaciers, rising sea levels, droughts, wildfires – those things are all hoaxes, okay? They're not happening. How many nations do we have in the world? Two hundred? Three hundred? If they all want to stay in that phony Paris climate accord, that's up to them – but the United States will not take part. Now let's get our coal miners back to work!"

While Donald Trump sticks his orange fingers in his orange ears and chants "Nah nah nah nah nah, I can't hear you," the rest of us should heed the dire warning of these scientists.

Over the next 80 years, melting sea ice and steadily warming ocean temperatures could cause sea levels to rise by 12 feet. Many coastal cities worldwide will be permanently flooded. Donald Trump's great-grandchildren will get to their jobs by swimming or canoeing and, just as Trump does now, they'll probably continue to insist climate change is a hoax.

Disturbing before-and-after images show what major US cities could look like in 2100 should the worst climate-change predictions come true

Greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise by around 1.5% per year. The worst polluters are the United States and China. Unless emissions can be reduced dramatically worldwide, we will have stronger storms, longer heat waves, severe droughts, rising seas and diminished food supplies – and our President takes no action because he believes global warming is a "hoax." Wow. (See also: "Russia hoax" and "impeachment hoax.")
