The book became a movie. The movie became a musical. Now the musical is becoming another movie. I can't say with any certainty that God gets upset when we don't notice the color purple in a field but I know I get upset by all these fershlugginer remakes, reboots and sequels!

"Do you know how much I make a year? I mean, even if I told you, you wouldn't believe it. Do you know what would happen if I suddenly decided to stop going into work? A business big enough that it could be listed on the NASDAQ goes belly up." Well, we don't have to worry that Walter White is going to stop working. Today in Hollywood unoriginality:

At first I thought "The 4400" was the number of this year's remakes, reboots, sequels and prequels. It turns out it was the name of a science-fiction series that aired on USA Network from 2004 to 2007. Today in Hollywood unoriginality:

"This city is headed for a disaster of Biblical proportions! Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes! Tornadoes!" And movie remakes. Don't forget all the movie remakes.

British author Lee Child -- his real name is James Grant -- has written 46 Jack Reacher novels. Tom Cruise has starred in two Jack Reacher movies. So what will unoriginal Hollywood do next? Yep, you guessed it.

Here, for your amazement and amusement, is The AV Club's ranking of failed movie reboots. Not surprsingly, the majority are horror films or superhero films. Topping the list: the 2016 Ghostbusters remake with a female cast.

Last month, Guillermo del Toro announced he's making a stop-motion animated musical version of Pinocchio. Disney is not to be outdone -- and if I'm lying, may my nose grow! Today in Hollywood unoriginality:

"I started to walk down the street when I heard a voice saying: 'Good evening, Mr. Dowd.' I turned and there was this big white rabbit leaning against a lamp post. Well, I thought nothing of that, because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name. And naturally, I went over to chat with him -- and he asked me, 'Mr. Dowd, do you know what Hollywood unoriginality is?' Well, sir, I surely didn't and I told him so. And then he told me about something that would happen 68 years from now."
