The aforementioned Jeff Bezos and Amazon.com are probably the number-one reason why sales at Barnes & Noble bookstores have been steadily declining. The number-two reason: e-books taking the place of real books printed with real ink on real paper. Barnes & Noble isn't in immediate danger of going out of business like Borders, Crown Books, Encore Books, Bookland, Lauriat's and Waldenbooks did -- but the 629-store chain is seeking a buyer.

Companies can fire employees for "lying down on the job": shirking responsibilities and not working hard enough. I wonder if mattress testers ever get fired for not lying down on the job.

It's called the "pink tax": Razors, toothbrushes, shampoo, fragrances, backpacks and other products marketed to women cost more than identical or similar products marketed to men. A New York company is fighting back. (It's also making money off women -- but that's just my cynicism talking.)

Google found, and fixed, a privacy breach seven months ago but said nothing about it. Lovely. Today's Wall Street Journal broke the story. And now Google Plus will become Google Minus.

In 2007, CBS sold nine of its television stations. In 2013, CBS sold its overseas outdoor advertising business. In 2017, CBS sold its radio division to Entercom. In 2019, will CBS itself be up for sale? I guess we will find out.

CBS to look for potential buyers after Moonves probe ends: Fox journalist
    Reuters, Oct 8 2018 1:49 PM

CBS would look for potential buyers for the cable company after a probe on its former Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves ends, a Fox journalist tweeted today. Moonves, who stepped down last month following allegations of sexual harassment, had opposed efforts by controlling shareholder Shari Redstone and her father Sumner Redstone to merge CBS with Viacom, another company they own.

"CBS board will soon begin to test the market for a potential buyer after conclusion of Moonves probe,” Fox Business Network journalist Charles Gasparino tweeted, adding that CBS interim CEO Joe Ianniello is one of the front runners for the top job. CBS declined to comment to a request from Reuters.

There is a big difference between Microsoft having a fix and Microsoft thinking they have a fix. We shall see. The software is now in beta tests.

I have pointed out that the steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by Donald Trump do not hurt other countries. They hurt businesses and consumers in the United States. Your honor, I would like to introduce Exhibit F:

WikiLeaks: Amazon uses a fake name from Seinfeld to hide a secret data center in Virginia
    Business Insider, Oct 11 2018

WikiLeaks today published the exact location of over 100 of Amazon's data centers. Previously, for security reasons, only the general area of these data centers was known. WikiLeaks reports that Amazon uses various pseudonyms for each facility to keep the locations secretive. Most notably, at its IAD77 data center in Manassas, Virginia, Amazon is known as "Vandelay Industries" — a nod to George Costanza and his unforgettable shenanigans at the unemployment office in Season 3 of Seinfeld. According to WikiLeaks, all Amazon employees at the IAD77 data center wear Vandelay Industry badges and use the Costanza-imagined company name in all correspondence with the building manager.

There are 38 Amazon data centers located in Virginia alone and several in the Bay Area and near Seattle. Amazon has centers spread around the world in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia as well. WikiLeaks published a map pinpointing the precise location of Amazon's identified data centers along with the report. Amazon did not immediately return a request for comment.

The Mayo Clinic details the causes, symptoms and treatments of lead poisoning -- https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-...s/syc-20354717 -- and the Supreme Court just refused to hear an appeal by paint manufacturers who implied, "Hey, lead poisoning isn't our fault!" Yeah, just like millions of cases of lung cancer were not the tobacco companies' fault.

Supreme Court lets stand California ruling holding lead paint makers liable for $400-million cleanup cost
Los Angeles Times, Oct 15 2018 12:45 PM

The Supreme Court today dealt a defeat to business groups in a closely watched California case, rejecting appeals of a ruling that requires former makers of lead paint to pay $400 million to clean up old homes. Business lawyers said they fear the decision will give a green light to other suits seeking to hold manufacturers liable for damage inflicted on the public, including the opioid crisis and climate change.

It takes a vote of four justices to hear an appeal. On Monday, the court issued a brief order saying it would not hear ConAgra vs. California or Sherwin-Williams vs. California. "This is very significant victory for the tens of thousands of California children who have been poisoned by lead paint," said Greta Hansen, a lawyer for Santa Clara County, which led the lawsuit brought on behalf of 10 municipalities including Los Angeles County. "Sherwin Williams and its co-defendants knew their product was toxic and still sold it to unwitting families. The case will provide the funds needed to protect future generations of California’s children from the devastating effect of lead paint."

The case against the lead paint makers began in 2000 as a product-liability suit on behalf of victims. But judges said this claim was flawed for several reasons. Lead paint was legal and commonly used prior to the 1970s and it was not clear that any particular company’s product could be blamed for the flaking paint in old homes. Lawyers refiled the suit in 2011 and after years of legal skirmishing, the case went to trial in 2013.

Lawyers for Santa Clara and other municipalities argued that lead in paint was a known toxin that is especially damaging to children. and said the companies that sold the lead paint should be required to help pay for removing it. A judge agreed in 2014 and said the several companies must contribute $1.1 billion for the cleanup. A California appellate court upheld the decision last year but limited the cleanup to homes built before 1951, which in turn reduced the amount to about $400 million.
