McDonald’s announced today that it has switched to fresh beef Quarter Pounders, rather than frozen, in 3,500 of the chain’s restaurants in the U.S. and plans to expand to more locations by May. The fast food giant’s announcement follows its pledge a year ago to roll out fresh beef in the majority of its 14,000 U.S. restaurants by mid-2018. "Our suppliers have invested about $60 million updating their supply chain to be able to make this conversion from frozen to fresh," McDonald’s U.S President Chris Kempczinski said.

The Cheat Sheet -- not a very good name for a website, if you ask me -- just posted the results of a Consumer Reports survey of more than 50,000 shoppers who rated supermarkets on cleanliness, competitive pricing, staff courtesy, checkout speed, produce and meat quality and seven other criteria. The chain with the worst reputation is, surprisingly, Walmart. I'm reminded of the 2004 South Park episode "Something Wall-Mart This Way Comes," in which all the townspeople complain about the huge new Wall-Mart driving smaller stores out of business -- but yet they all still shop there.

Little Caesars said it would offer a free lunch if the impossible happened. It happened Friday night in Charlotte. Number 16 seed University of Maryland-Baltimore County made history by demolishing Number 1 seed Virginia, 74-54. It was the first time a number 16 seed knocked off a top seed in the NCAA tournament. The pizza company promised that every family that enters a participating store between 11:30 AM and 1 PM on April 2 and mentions the offer at the check-out counter would receive one free Hot-N-Ready lunch combo: four slices of Detroit-style deep dish pizza with pepperoni and one 20-ounce Pepsi-Cola product drink.

Yesterday the Kraft Heinz corporation unleashed a contest of sorts, pitting its "new" creation, a blend of ketchup and mayonnaise called Mayochup, up against Americans' taste buds. Vote "yes" for the condiment, a Twitter poll cried, and Kraft Heinz — which sold $6.78 billion worth of sauces and condiments in 2016 — would make the product available in bottle form for "you saucy Americans."
As media outlets began to report about the product, many took to Twitter to hash out the sauce’s actual origin story. As residents of Puerto Rico, Argentina, Colombia, Germany and the American Midwest have been pointing out, mayo-ketchup sauces have been part of the culinary landscape for decades. Regardless of whether Heinz ends up releasing the product in the US, other versions such as Goya’s Mayo Ketchup and the artisan-branded Stephen’s Gourmet are already available on US store shelves.

Tarantula topping draws the brave into North Carolina burger joint

A hamburger topped with a tarantula is attracting customers to a restaurant in Durham, North Carolina. Bull City Burger & Brewery is celebrating "Exotic Meat Month" by featuring burgers made with everything from alligator to iguana, python, bison, turtle and insects. But it’s the tarantula challenge that has customers going buggy. For $30, customers get a 100% North Carolina pasture-raised beef burger topped with Gruyère cheese, chili sauce and an oven-roasted tarantula. If they finish their plate, they get a T-shirt to immortalize the feat. At least four people have completed the challenge.
