A company in the Netherlands is making meat by combining nutrients with small samples of cells from a living animal. At least they call it meat. I wouldn't.

Lab-grown meat could be in restaurants by 2021

I know Starbucks thinks this is a good idea but wouldn't it be a lot easier for a customer to point to a picture on the menu instead of having to sign "triple mocha blonde cascara horchata chai vanilla crème dragonfruit caffè latte frappuccino"?

Starbucks 'Signing Store' in Washington DC will allow customers to order in American Sign Language

Only 6.2 million of these coins will be distributed among 50 countries? I wonder how many minutes will elapse before we start seeing the coins offered on eBay for $25 each.

McDonald's creates collectible coins honoring Big Mac’s 50th anniversary
    The Press-Enterprise, Jul 29 2018 2:31 PM

McDonald's is marking the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac by minting 6.2 million collectible "MacCoins." Distribution of what McDonald's calls "the world’s first fully food-backed currency" begins in 50 countries on August 2. The coins are made from brass sourced in the United States. McDonald's customers can get them while supplies last by purchasing a Big Mac or a Big Mac Extra Value Meal. There is no additional charge for the coin.

MacCoins can be saved or redeemed for free Big Macs, the signature burger that went on the fast food chain’s national menu in 1968. There are five MacCoin designs, one for each 10 years of the Big Mac's existence.

To qualify as an MRE (Meal Ready to Eat), a food product must be able to last for three years in storage. I can hear it now: "Y'know, Sarge, this pizza MRE isn't bad -- but pepperoni isn't supposed to be green, is it?"

Army troops will soon be eating a pizza MRE in the field

The company went through a bankruptcy in 2011-12 and closed more than 100 restaurants. Now it's bankrupt again. Have people suddenly stopped eating?

I'm posting this story here, although it might be more appropriate for the Weird News thread. Lynyrd Skynyrd's That Smell could be this Dairy Queen's theme song.

A Dairy Queen in Calgary is offering a year of free Blizzards to anyone who can find the source of a horrible smell

Show of hands: How many people who have been through "sensitivity training" feel that their attitudes and prejudices were changed for the better? Anyone? No one? Yeah, that's what I thought.

KFC holding sensitivity training after incident with deaf woman
    CBS News, Aug 9 2018 5:41 PM

The management company of 270 KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell franchises nationwide has agreed to provide sensitivity training at those outlets following a May incident at a KFC in Mississippi in which a deaf woman felt she was being mocked. Disability Rights Mississippi, a nonprofit that advocates for people with disabilities, reached an agreement on behalf of Bobbie Cole of Byram, Mississippi with Canada-based Franchise Management Inc., the company that operates the fast-food franchises. Cole, who is deaf but can read lips, said KFC employees made fun of her while she tried to order food at a Jackson area drive-thru.

Yes, because when you think of authentic Mexican food, the first thing that comes to mind is bacon, right?

McDonald's plans $6 billion makeover of its restaurants
    CBS News, Aug 14 2018 2:56 PM

McDonald's today announced a $6 billion plan to overhaul most of its 14,000 US restaurants, the fast-food giant's biggest renovation in decades. The makeover will include new furniture and decor, remodeled counters that allow for table service and "refreshed" exterior designs. McDonald's also is planning to install digital kiosks for ordering, customizing and paying for meals, as well as easier-to-read digital menu boards in restaurants and drive-through lanes. In addition, restaurants will designate parking spots for customers who order food through the company's mobile app.
