In April 2016, SiriusXM launched the limited-run ONEderland on channel 18. It was supposed to air for only four weeks but proved to be so popular it became a permanent channel. ONEderland features all the "one-hit wonders" and can be heard on channel 303 online and on the SiriusXM app. Here is a small sample of the playlist -- but I don't know why MMMBop is included. Hanson reached #9 with I Will Come To You and had two other songs that were top-30 hits. And how can Wheatus and SR-71 be considered "one-hit wonders" when their songs didn't even make the Hot 100?

Today's Satellite Survey countdown on the '60s channel featured this week in 1962. Bruce Channel's Hey Baby was number one. Billy Joe & the Checkmates' Percolator Twist was #10. The song was adapted from this Maxwell House "singing coffee pot" commercial:

The song was reviewed in the December 11, 1961 issue of Billboard: "Instrumental has a fresh melody line and uncommon instrumentation. Merits exposure." That "uncommon instrumentation" was a dampened xylophone. As for "Billy Joe," that was an alias of Doré Records co-founder Louis Bideu, who co-wrote Percolator Twist with Ernie Freeman but did not play on the recording. The musicians were Freeman on xylophone, Rene Hall on guitar, Red Callender on bass and Earl Palmer on drums. In 2000, Palmer became one of the first session musicians to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Here is the song:

Brian Wilson will perform the Beach Boys Christmas Album in its entirety on his month-long Holiday Tour this winter. The Beach Boys legend, who has spent the past two years touring for the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds, will bring along longtime bandmates Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin for the holiday trek. The tour kicks off November 28th in Minneapolis. The Christmas-themed tour is the first of its kind for Wilson, who will also play cuts off his 2005 seasonal LP What I Really Want For Christmas during the performances. Hey, Mike, how about ending your feud with Brian Wilson and Al Jardine so all the surviving Beach Boys can perform together again?

Beach Boys set for major 4th of July honor
    Kbay.com, May 25 2018

The Beach Boys are to receive the National Artistic Achievement Award at Washington DC’s annual Independence Day party. Mike Love and his band will become only the fifth recipients of the honor on July 4, when they join Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder, Reba McEntire and John Williams.

John Stamos, longtime Beach Boys friend and frequent collaborator, will present the group with the trophy ahead of a performance on the West Lawn of the US Capitol for the televised A Capitol Fourth festivities, which Stamos will also host. "This is an extraordinary recognition for our band," Love says. “We are grateful to everyone involved with A Capitol Fourth for this beautiful honor. The Beach Boys have been synonymous with 4th of July and performing on the West Lawn for decades now. It is an enormous source of pride."

Speaking of the Beach Boys.......The Beach Boys Channel, SiriusXM channel 4, just played Problem Child, the theme song of a 1990 movie starring John Ritter, Amy Yasbeck, Gilbert Gottfried.....and Michael Oliver as the "problem child." The song was released as a cassette single and could have been a big hit if it had appeared over the movie's opening credits. Instead it appeared over the closing credits. Since most moviegoers get up and leave as soon as the credits start, very few people heard the song. The Problem Child never charted. Here it is -- and yes, that's Full House co-star and Elvis Presley wannabe John Stamos playing drums:

In June of 2017, Ken Merson, who had worked at several radio stations in Baltimore and Washington DC and hosted evenings on SiriusXM's '50s channel, replaced Lou Simon as program director of the '60s channel. Merson purged the playlist of almost all the songs that were not top-20 hits and he changed the weekend Top 40 countdown show to a Top 30. He turned the '60s channel into a clone of the typical FM oldies station of the 1990s.

Merson announced today on Phlash Phelps' program that he is leaving to take over the morning show at WQLL 1370 AM/99.9 FM, a classic hits station in Pikesville/Baltimore, Maryland. Will Lou come back to the '60s channel? Will the lower-charting songs return to the playlist? Will the Top 40 countdown shows return? We can only hope.

I can now answer the three questions I asked above: We don't know, we don't know, and yes. Dave Hoeffel, midday DJ on SiriusXM's '60s channel, is the new host of the weekend Satellite Survey countdown programs. Hoeffel has been in radio since 1977 and has worked at stations in Atlantic City, Trenton, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Philadelphia.

With "top-20-hits-only" Ken Merson gone from the '60s On 6 channel, the playlist is starting to expand. I was surprised to hear Wayne Newton's Comin' On Too Strong, which reached #65 in early 1965. Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher, who had the 1964 hits Hey Little Cobra (as the Rip Chords) and Summer Means Fun (as Bruce & Terry), sing backup. In 1965, Johnston joined the Beach Boys, replacing Brian Wilson, who had decided to quit touring with the band in order to focus on writing and recording. Comin' On Too Strong sounds like a Beach Boys song. Here it is:
