Today is the first time I've heard the word "phablet" -- and I already hate it.

Apple preparing to release three new smartphones
    Bloomberg, Feb 26 2018 1:50 PM

Apple is preparing to release a trio of new smartphones later this year: the largest iPhone ever, an upgraded handset the same size as the iPhone X and a less expensive model with some of the flagship phone's key features. With the new lineup, Apple wants to appeal to the growing number of consumers who crave the multitasking attributes of so-called phablets while also catering to those looking for a more affordable version of the iPhone X. The Cupertino tech giant, which is already running production tests with suppliers, is expected to announce the new phones this fall.

Someday, people might ask, "Hey, remember when magazines used to be printed with real ink on real paper?"

Apple buys Texture, a digital magazine subscription service
    Bloomberg, Mar 12 2018 11:!0 AM

Apple is acquiring Texture, a digital magazine service that lets users subscribe to more than 200 magazines for $9.99 a month. Texture, offered via the app stores of Apple, Google and Amazon, bolsters Apple's efforts in online services and media. The Cupertino company aims to top $50 billion in annual services revenue by 2021 and a magazine subscription service would likely contribute to that. Texture's magazine catalog includes Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, Vanity Fair, Vogue and Bloomberg Businessweek.

Apple releases new iPad in challenge to Chromebook
    CBS News, Mar 27 2018 1:58 PM

Apple unveiled an ultra-light iPad with stylus support today at Chicago's largest public high school during an education event aimed at getting more of its high-tech products into US classrooms. The new 9.7-inch iPad will be able to use Apple's Pencil stylus, which costs an additional $99. The Pencil will allow students and teachers to create smart annotations directly in documents. Apple's Pencil previously worked only on its more expensive iPad Pro line. The new iPad device will have an 8-megapixel camera with 10 hours battery life and weigh just one pound. It starts at $299 for schools and $329 for consumers and is available to ship starting immediately.

I could say VirnetX is taking a big bite out of Apple. I could -- but I probably shouldn't.

Memo to Apple and the Wall Street Journal: A "credit" is not the same as a "refund."

Bought an iPhone battery last year? Apple has a $50 refund.
The Wall Street Journal, May 23 2018 3:04 PM

Apple will give a partial refund to some customers who paid full price for iPhone battery replacements in 2017, its latest benefit to placate owners since disclosing it began curbing the performance of some of its smartphones last year to preserve battery life. The technology giant said today it would give a $50 credit to customers who replaced the battery in an iPhone 6 or older model between January 1 and December 28, 2017. The refund will reduce the cost of the battery replacement from $79 to $29.

The head of Apple music is former iTunes vice president Oliver Schusser. The head of Apple's new publishing division is former iTunes legal director Elena Segal. I see a "corporate raiding" pattern developing.
