Trump attends civil rights museum opening; black leaders stay away
    Reuters, Dec 9 2017 1:30 PM

President Donald Trump flew to Mississippi today to attend the opening of a civil rights museum but his visit was marred by the absence of top African-American leaders who stayed away in protest of his policies and record on race relations. Trump toured the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and delivered brief remarks, paying tribute to African-Americans who fought institutionalized racism, including Medgar Evers, the civil rights activist who was murdered outside his home in Jackson in 1963. "We want our country to be a place where every child from every background can grow up free from fear, innocent of hatred and surrounded by love, opportunity and hope," Trump said in prepared remarks.

Representative John Lewis of Georgia, a Democrat who marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s, said on Thursday that he would not go to the museum opening because of Trump’s presence. "President Trump’s attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum," Lewis said in a statement with Mississippi Democratic U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson, who also declined to attend. The two men also cited Trump’s "disparaging comments about women, the disabled, immigrants and National Football League players" and said the president had shown disrespect to those who fought for civil rights in Mississippi.

Star US diplomat quits with fiery resignation letter to Rex Tillerson
    HuffPost, Dec 11 2017 7:23 PM

A distinguished US diplomat who was seen as a rising star at the State Department resigned after writing a searing letter to Secretary Of State Rex Tillerson, accusing him of gutting the department and damaging America’s standing across the world. Elizabeth Shackelford, who served as a political officer based in Nairobi for the U.S. mission to Somalia, lamented in a November 7 letter the "stinging disrespect" President Donald Trump’s administration had shown the diplomatic corps and how it was "driving" the department’s most experienced staff away in growing numbers.

Shackleford said she was "shocked" when Tillerson told department employees that advancing human rights across the globe "creates obstacles to our ability to advance our national security interests." She wrote, "The cost of this is visible every day in Mission Somalia, my current post, where State’s diplomatic influence, on the country and within our own interagency, is waning." If Tillerson is unable to "stem the bleeding" and preserve the department’s mission, she added, "I would humbly recommend you follow me out the door."

Report: Advisers held 'interventions,' urged Trump to acknowledge Russian meddling
    Geobeats, Dec 14 2017 12:09 PM

President Trump has repeatedly dismissed Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election. The Washington Post reported today, citing inside sources, that during the transition period, a group of advisers that included Jared Kushner and Reince Priebus held "impromptu interventions," urging Trump to acknowledge the interference as fact. They "sought to convince Trump that he could affirm the validity of the intelligence without diminishing his electoral win." The efforts are said to have happened in January and not long after U.S. intelligence agencies presented the then president-elect with evidence of Russia’s attempts to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential race.

An intelligence report released to the public concluded, in part, "Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential election. Russia’s goals were to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton and harm her electability and potential presidency. Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump."

Notably, Trump has doubted the intelligence and has been rather consistent in downplaying Russia’s interference in the election. He has also stated, "Every time Putin sees me, he says, 'I didn’t do that.' And I really believe that when he tells me that, he means it."
