Remember the Republicans promising their $1.5-trillion tax cuts for big corporations and the wealthiest Americans would benefit our nation's economy? That hasn't happened. And now, as the federal deficit approaches a trillion dollars, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants to reduce the deficit by rescinding the tax cuts. Naw, just kidding. He's a Republican. He would never do such a thing. Here is what he does want to do:

Republicans like to complain about "tax-and-spend" Democrats but I fail to see how "cut-taxes-for-the-wealthy-and-then-cut-Social-Security-and-Medicare" Republicans are offering a better alternative.

Trump appointed anti-environmentalist and climate change denier Scott Pruitt to ruin the EPA. No, that is not a typo. "Ruin" is correct. (The scandal-plagued Pruitt wound up resigning.) Trump has now appointed two women to the Department of the Interior who are likely to ruin public lands and ruin protections for fish and wildlife. Where are all those "best people" Trump said he would surround himself with?

In contract bridge, a "trump" is a suit that outranks all other suits for the duration of a hand. I wonder how much longer before the American Contract Bridge Association votes to rename it.

Another Trump-branded building has decided to take down the president’s name
    Washington Post, Oct 17 2018 6:43 PM

The residents of a Manhattan condominium called Trump Place have voted to remove the president’s name from the tower’s facade, the latest in a string of properties that have distanced themselves from the Trump brand since Election Day 2016. Unit owners in the Upper West Side building, a 46-story tower at 200 Riverside Blvd., were informed of the decision to remove the signs in an email from the condo board.

According to the email, 69.3% of owners who participated in a vote in September and early October said they were in favor of taking down President Trump’s name. As a result, the board said, it had "passed a resolution to remove the signage." The change will not affect the building’s legal name, "200 Riverside Boulevard at Trump Place," only the "TRUMP PLACE" signs on its east and west facades.

Not surprisingly, the pompous orange buffoon who said he would pay the legal bills of supporters who beat up protesters thinks highly of a fellow Republican who body-slammed a reporter -- and the mindless schmucks at his rally think highly of Trump and the other Republican. Sad.

Trump at Montana rally praises congressman who body-slammed a reporter
    CBS News, Oct 18 2018 10:04 PM

At a rally in Montana today, President Trump praised Republican Representative Greg Gianforte for body-slamming a reporter in 2016 while also continuing his line of attack that voting for Democrats is voting for a "mob." "Any guy who can do a body slam, he's my candidate, he's my guy," Trump said about Gianforte, who pleaded guilty in June 2017 to assaulting a Guardian reporter the day before the state's special election. Trump's comment elicited cheers from the crowd.

Trump was also rallying support for Republican Senate candidate Matt Rosendale, who is challenging Democratic Senator Jon Tester. Although Trump won Montana by 20 points, a September CBS News Battleground Tracker poll showed Tester leading Rosendale by two points.

Trump, who often discusses immigration in his rallies, focused on criminals entering the country illegally and building a border wall between the US and Mexico. He tied the issue of illegal immigration to Democrats, saying they are the party of "open borders" and of "crime." He added, "Democrats create mobs, Republicans create jobs."

Here is more news about the White House that Trump described as a "smooth running machine." John Bolton and John Kelly certainly never have to worry about being compared to John McCain and John F. Kennedy.

Putin says Russia didn't meddle in our election and Trump believes him. Kim says he'll get rid of North Korea's nuclear weapons and Trump believes him. Bin Salman says he knows nothing about Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance and death and Trump believes him. But when United States intelligence agencies release highly detailed reports based on years of research, surveillance and intelligence gathering by thousands of people, Trump doesn't believe them. Go figure! This is from Business Insider:

Trump's handling of Saudi Arabia and the Khashoggi case is alienating him from his biggest allies in Congress

Key Republican Senators, including Graham, Rubio, Paul and Corker, have condemned Saudi Arabia over the case and its broader record on human-rights issues. They're part of a bipartisan call to impose economic sanctions and halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Trump has been criticized for being too "soft" on the Saudis and hasn't committed to any form of punishment. Moving forward, Trump will likely find it far more difficult to push his agenda through Congress when it comes to Saudi Arabia, experts say.

White House Correspondents' Association slams Trump's 'praise for a violent assault' against reporter
    Washington Examiner, Oct 19 2018

The White House Correspondents' Association issued a rare public denunciation of President Trump on Friday, one day after Trump praised a congressman for "body-slamming" a reporter last year. "All Americans should recoil from the president's praise for a violent assault on a reporter doing his Constitutionally protected job," WHCA President Olivier Knox said in a statement.

Trump told a campaign rally in Montana on Thursday that he approved of Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte's infamous "body-slam" of Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs in May 2017, which broke the reporter's glasses. The Republican lawmaker profusely apologized and pleaded guilty.

"This amounts to the celebration of a crime by someone sworn to uphold our laws and an attack on the First Amendment by someone who has solemnly pledged to defend it," Knox said. "We should never shrug at the president cheerleading for a violent act targeting a free and independent news media."

On the campaign stage, Trump made light of Gianforte's assault of Jacobs. "Any guy that can do a body slam, he’s my kind of guy." Speaking to the Congressman, he added: "There's nothing to be embarrassed about."

A Los Angeles Times editorial contrasts Trump's outrage over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi with Trump's praise for a Republican who body-slammed a journalist. Trump frequently denounces the free press as "fake news" and "the enemy of the people." It is not surprising that he approves of attacks on journalists -- as long as they aren't fatal.

Trump's mixed signals on attacking journalists: Murder bad, body-slamming good
