CNN's Erin Burnett today spoke with Jennifer Wexton, Democratic Representative of Virginia's 10th Congressional District. Wexton complained about Mitch McConnell refusing to allow the Senate to vote on a bipartisan spending plan approved the House. The plan would allow government to reopen but McConnell rejects any plan that doesn't give Trump $5.6 billion of taxpayers' money to waste on a stupid wall.

Wexton also noted that most of the illegals, and most of the drugs entering the United States are coming through legal ports of entry. She said, "Republicans controlled both houses of Congress for two years. Why didn't they say there was a 'crisis' and an 'emergency' then? Why did they wait until the Democrats regained the House?" Good question!

"Hypocrite" is hipócrita in Spanish, ipocrita in Italian and and Heuchler in German. I wonder how you say "hypocrite" in Republican.

GOP rejected Obama's executive reach but accepts Trump's
The Associated Press, Jan 11 2019

President Barack Obama stunned Republicans when he bypassed Congress and — relying on what he called his pen and his phone — used executive powers to enact his agenda, including protecting millions of young immigrants from deportation. Now, with President Donald Trump proposing an even more dramatic end-run around Congress to build his promised border wall with Mexico, many Republicans are uneasily cheering him on.

The potential use of a national emergency declaration by Trump for the border wall shows the extent to which the party is willing to yield on treasured values — in this case, the constitutional separation of powers — to steer clear of confronting the White House and give the President what he wants. It's a different accommodation from just a few years ago. Then Republicans often called out Obama as overstepping his authority in using executive actions when Congress failed to act on White House priorities. They complained about Obama as "king," "emperor" or "tyrant."

Trump denounces as "fake" the reporters who say the White House is chaotic and dysfunctional and Trump has no strategy for ending the shutdown. This is the same Trump who recently described the White House as a "smooth-running machine." Does anyone believe him? Anybody? Hello?

Eight 30-foot-tall border wall prototypes were erected at Otay Mesa in California, just north of Tijuana. a January 11 story in The Architects Newspaper reveals none of the walls will be able to prevent people from crossing the border. And this is what our President wants to spend as much as $25 billion on?

Here is a stern warning -- as well as a Stern warning -- that Trump's stupid border wall will be a waste of money and will not solve any problems:

Howard Stern says Trump's border wall is just something 'morons can get behind'
    Yahoo Entertainment, Jan 22 2019

Howard Stern on Wednesday discussed President Trump’s immigration and border security address that was broadcast the night before. Stern said he expected Trump's speech to be "full of s***" but it topped his expectations. After saying "there's no crisis" at the US-Mexico border, Stern went on to talk about Trump's proposed border wall — which is behind the ongoing partial government shutdown — saying it won't solve any of the country's immigration problems.

"The wall's a problem because it's a waste of money. Even Donald knows that," Stern said. "The wall is a simplistic answer to our problems with immigration. It’s something that, you know, morons can get behind because they're like, 'Oh, yeah, if you build a wall no one can get over it.' But it’s not that simple. Even Donald's not into this wall. It's just he's embarrassed because he can't get it and Rush Limbaugh shamed him. The whole concept of the wall got him elected. A lot of people could wrap their brain around it. But the wall ain't going to solve s*** and it's going to cost a fortune. Come on, it's nonsense. It’s just nonsense.”

Stern also talked about how drugs are coming "into our ports" versus just from over the southern border and he pointed out that Trump's shutdown over not getting his wall is making security in the country even weaker. "Right now we don't even have air traffic controllers being paid," Stern pointed out. "Talk about a lack of security. If I'm a terrorist, I'm coming in now. I bet you they're flooding in while this government shutdown is going on."

MSNBC's Chris Hayes today said he thinks most Republicans are opposed to the border wall that Trump keeps demanding but they're afraid to stand up to Trump and say so publicly. Things were different three years ago. Hayes played clips of three Republicans speaking in 2016:

Jeb Bush said, "The wall will never be built and Mexico will never pay for it." Chris Christie declared, " This wall will not get built no matter whose name is on it. Lindsey Graham called Trump a "kook" who is "unfit for public office" and "one of the dumbest human beings I've ever seen." So why can't these men speak up now, I wonder.

Meanwhile, the woes are worsening for the pompous, petulant, orange-skinned buffoon who shut down part of the federal government:

"I'm a great negotiator. I'm a deal maker. I make deals. That's what I do." The man who uttered those words is continuing to hold 800,000 federal workers hostage and refusing to make any deals. He will not budge from his demand for an expensive, unnecessary, ineffective border wall funded by United States taxpayers -- but he promised a "big beautiful wall" to his immigrant-hating followers and he knows if he doesn't build it he will lose their support. But let's keep blaming the Democrats.

'We will be out for a long time' unless Democrats budge, Trump says, as shutdown enters fourth week

Letter from Brian Lipsom of Beverly Hills in today's Los Angeles Times:

"On December 14, 1999, Ahmed Ressam, an al-Qaeda operative, was arrested trying to cross the border into the US with a large amount of explosives hidden in the trunk of his car. His intent was to cause death and destruction at Los Angeles International Airport. If Trump wants to use actual incidents of terrorists being caught at the border as justification to build his wall, he should use the example of Ressam.

Of course Ressam was trying to enter the US from Canada. If Trump's motive is truly the safety of the US and not another bigoted gesture, he should build his wall on the northern border."

I love this simple, practical solution that somebody posted on Facebook: "Trump should just lie and say the wall is already built. His supporters will believe him and the rest of us will save billions of dollars."

    Right on!

Yesterday the Tweeter-in-Chief said building a wall would keep drugs and criminals out of our country. It won't, of course. Let's hear from some former drug smugglers who have been arrested and are now revealing their methods:

Traffickers at the El Chapo trial say drugs aren't smuggled through open parts of the border
Sonia Moghe, CNN, Jan 12 2019 11:41 PM ET

Most drugs are smuggled into the United States onboard fishing boats, trains, tractor-trailers and ordinary cars that come into the country at legal ports of entry, according to former cartel members who've testified in the trial of notorious cartel leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Some cartel members have testified about using underground tunnels. But none have said they've transported drugs into the United States at unwalled sections of the border.

In Guzman's case, the government's own witnesses -- many of them former Mexican cartel associates -- testified that after the government cracked down on smuggling tunnels, they began relying on legal ports of entry to bring drugs into the country.

Former high-ranking Sinaloa cartel leader Jesus Zambada Garcia testified about Guzman's use of tunnels in the early 1990s to quickly smuggle drugs such as cocaine into the United States. He said that in the late 1980s to early 1990s, 95% of cocaine was brought into the United States by a tunnel under Arizona's border with Mexico. But as law enforcement began discovering and closing tunnels, cartel management directed drugs to flow into the United States in other ways.

Tractor-trailers were, and continue to be, a popular method of smuggling in narcotics. Some trucks are fitted with a "double bottom" that has hidden compartments. Others are filled with goods, such as large cans of chilis, that contain sand surrounding a specially made, cylindrical brick of cocaine. If shaken by authorities, the sand makes the cans sound like chilis are moving around inside. From 1990 to 1993, nearly 30 tons of cocaine were smuggled into the United States using this method, Zambada Garcia said.

Zambada Garcia's nephew, Vicente Zambada, testified that drugs were often placed in "clavos" -- hidden compartments in cars -- and driven across the border through legal ports of entry. "Mexican families were hired to drive cars with secret compartments across the border at Juarez, sometimes three or four times a day," he said.

Guzman led the notorious Sinaloa cartel, described by the US Justice Department as one of the world's most violent and powerful drug cartels. He repeatedly broke out of prison until he was recaptured in January 2016. Guzman was extradited to the United States and pleaded not guilty to 17 federal charges that include leading a continuing criminal enterprise, firearm violations related to drug trafficking and money laundering. His trial began in November in a New York federal district court under unprecedented heavy security.
