Letters in today's Los Angeles Times:

"A British ambassador describes Trump and his administration as inept, insecure and worse. This is news? With much of this country and many others globally echoing that assessment, it is easy to conclude that Trump never planned on getting elected, still does not have any clue how to govern and has no policies, no strategy, no diplomacy, no knowledge and no idea how to behave as the 'leader of the free world.' I think the ambassador was actually benevolent in his description of a man so obviously and completely out of his depth. What would qualify as news would be if Trump started to conduct himself more in line with the requirements of the Presidency. Don't hold your breath." – Penelope Burley, Santa Rosa

"Let me get this straight: Trump is so insecure he won't deal with the British envoy to the United States because he called the President insecure?" – Thomas Penfield, Cardiff

If subpoenas are issued, and if Kushner, Sessions, Flynn, Kelly, RosensteIn and Lewandowski don't ignore them, and if they don't lie under oath, we may finally learn whether Trump obstructed justice. (Robert Mueller did not rule out the possibility.) Those are three very big ifs.

Trump keeps insisting the White House is not in chaos and is a "smooth-running machine" even though dozens of aides have quit or been fired over ethics violations and legal issues. Today the exodus continues:

Kim Darroch resigned as British ambassador to the United States after vain, pompous, vindictive, egotistical, narcissistic Emperor Trump spent two days on Twitter lashing out at him for daring to say, in memos that were meant to remain confidential, that the Trump administration is "inept" and "dysfunctional." Trump, ever the schoolyard bully, called Darroch "wacky" and "a very stupid guy." I think Darroch should not have resigned. He was telling the truth – but of course Trump hates anyone who tells the truth about him. Here is a letter from Gregg Ferry of Carlsbad in today's Los Angeles Times:

"In order to form appropriate foreign policy, a leader needs a succinct and accurate assessment of other countries' governments. A leader relies on his or her ambassadors to provide that. So I put forth the question: How does one write a politically correct message that accurately portrays a foreign leader who is erratic, unpredictable, selfish, bigoted and egotistical?"

And from Michael Mauer of Los Angeles:

"With the resignation of Britain's ambassador to the United States, it should be apparent even to Donald Trump's die-hard supporters what his unique qualifications for the Presidency are. He brings an unerring lack of diplomatic tact, an unmatched ignorance of the world and an unqualified sense of self-importance. That he is so proud of these qualities speaks volumes about him. Unfortunately, it does the same for the lemmings who mindlessly follow him."

CNN's Erin Burnett just reported that during the first two and a half years of Barack Obama's Presidency, no cabinet officials exited. During the first two and a half years of the George W. Bush Presidency, only one Cabinet official exited: Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'Neill. During the first two and a half years of Donald Trump's Presidency, twelve Cabinet officials have exited. Twelve! But don't forget, Trump surrounds himself with "the very best people" and the White House is "a smooth-running machine." Trump says so.

When Donald Trump was running for President, he had goofy caps and a goofy slogan and no real policy other than wanting to undo everything Barack Obama did, most notably the Affordable Care Act, the DACA program and the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran. British Ambassador Kim Darroch wrote in a 2018 memo that Trump had no strategy for dealing with the aftermath of withdrawing from the nuclear deal and "no sort of plan for reaching out to partners and allies." The withdrawal was just part of Trump's goal of undoing everything his predecessor did.

Let's have another look at the White House that Trump insists is a "smooth-running machine." A page 2 story in today's Los Angeles Times is headined

Playing musical chairs in the Defense Department
Scramble to fill vacancies creates unprecedented turmoil at Pentagon.

"Who is running the Pentagon?" David Cloud asks. "These days it can change with dizzying speed as the Trump administration struggles to find nominees for top military and civilian jobs whom President Trump likes and who can survive Senate confirmation." The Defense Department has not had a confirmed chief since James Mattis stepped down in December and at least 19 posts are unfilled or are filled by "acting" appointees. Cloud quotes former deputy assistant Secretary of Defense Jim Townsend, who explains why Trump is "fine" with the Defense Department being devoid of leadership: "Trump would rather have acting people who are beholden to him. You are not going to have somebody who is telling the president 'no.'"

Trump fills positions with temporary "acting" appointees because they're easy to get rid of when they refuse to accede to his demands. The cabinet's largest department – indeed, the entire White House – is in turmoil. Trump likes to tout his so-called "America First" policy. In truth, his policy is "Trump First."

Al Green, a Congressional representative from Texas (and not to be confused with the same-named r&b singer) says Trump has brought "contempt, ridicule, disgrace and disrepute" to the office of the Presidency. He has indeed. This is Green's third attempt to force a House vote on articles of impeachment. I doubt it will be successful. According to The Hill, only 84 House Democrats support the impeachment of Trump. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is not among them.

Not one Republican Representative voted to impeach Trump. They know standing up to our pompous, narcissistic, egotistical, immature, thin-skinned, vindictive President would put their political future in jeopardy. They're a group of mindless little rats following the irresistible lure of the orange-skinned Pied Piper. Nothing is more important to them than Emperor Trump and the Republican party.

"I don't know Stormy Daniels." That was a lie. "I never had an affair with her." That was a lie. "Michael Cohen is not my attorney." That was a lie. "I know nothing about hush-money payments." That was a lie. At least Trump is consistent. He lies about everything.

FBI believed Trump was closely involved in hush-money scheme, unsealed documents show
The release of the previously redacted documents comes one day after the judge in the case disclosed that prosecutors had completed their probe into Michael Cohen's campaign finance crimes.
