In 1958, The RIAA began issuing gold records for million-selling ssingles. In 1976, they began issuing platinum records for singles which sell two million copies -- and the first platinum award went to Johnnie Taylor's number-one pop and r&b hit Disco Lady. The song was written by Harvey Scales, who also wrote the Dells' Be For Real For Me. Scales previously led a band, Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds. They released 13 singles between 1963 and 1970 but had only one chart hit, Get Down, which reached #32 on the r&b chart and #79 on the Hot 100 in November 1967. Scales also released eight solo singles, 1972-79.
