The Softones had four R&B hits in the mid-1970s: I'm Gonna Prove It, Can't Help Falling In Love, The First Day and That Old Black Magic. They shortened their name to the Tones and had one final hit in 1983, One More Time. Marvin Brown sang in a high falsetto, similar to that of Eddie Kendricks and the Stylistics' Russell Thompkins Jr.

In 1958, Rod Bernard & The Twisters recorded This Should Go On Forever. It was the first single released on Jin Records, a Louisiana label founded by Floyd Soileau and named for his wife Jinver. After the song became a local hit, it was released nationally by Argo Records and reached #20 on the Hot 100 in April 1959. Bernard released 34 singles for nine different labels but had only one other chart hit, Colinda in 1959.
