    McQueen played saxophone and led a jazz quartet which toured throughout the country and performed alongside Ray Charles, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Hoagy Carmichael, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Nat "King" Cole and many others. Following a 1969 surgery for throat cancer, McQueen quit performing – but only for a few years. He was still playing sax at age 100.

    Julie Harris won a Tony award for best actress for her portrayal of Emily Dickinson in Luce's 1976 one-woman play The Belle Of Amherst. In 1983, Harris portrayed Charlotte Brontë in Brontë, another one-woman play written by Luce. Both were produced by Charles Nelson Reilly. Luce also wrote the screenplay for the 1986 CBS tv-movie The Last Days Of Patton.

    In 1955, five high school students in Queens formed the Cleftones (originally known as the Silvertones). Their biggest hit, a re-arrangement of the 1938 Hoagy Carmichael-Frank Loesser composition Heart & Soul, reached #10 on the R&B chart and #18 on the Hot 100 in 1961.

    Herb Cox, co-founder and lead singer of the doo-wop group The Cleftones, died December 7 at 80. Herb had been suffering from Alzheimer's for the past two years. The Cleftones' biggest hit was 1961's Heart & Soul. Several Cleftones songs were featured in films: Can't We Be Sweethearts appeared in Goodfellas;
