    Schmidt, a member of the American Theatre Hall of Fame, is best known for composing the music for The Fantasticks, including Try To Remember, which was originally sung by Jerry Orbach and in 1965 became a hit for Ed Ames. Roger Williams, Gladys Knight and the Brothers Four also charted with versions of the song.

    The first Tower Records opened in 1960 in Sacramento. A second store opened in 1967 in San Francisco. A third store opened in 1970 in Los Angeles. The chain rapidly expanded. At its peak, there were Tower stores in 20 countries. Tower filed for bankruptcy in 2004 and went out of business in 2006. Parents, you may have to explain to your children what "records" are.

    Among the Ventures' hits: Walk Don't Run, Perfidia, Sleigh Ride and Hawaii Five-0. Don Wilson, 85, is now the last surviving original member and he retired from the band in 2016.
