"Colored people" was a descriptive term for non-whites, a term coined in 1916. It has been replaced by "people of color." That sounds less offensive than "colored people" – but is it really? Why can't we just call people "people"? Anyway, Joe Biden is thinking about a running mate.

ABC will televise the three-hour debate September 12. Only ten candidates met the requirements to qualify for the debate: A 2% showing in four national polls and 130,000 donors. On stage at Texas Southern University will be Biden, Sanders, Warren, Harris, Klobuchar, Booker, Buttigieg, Castro, O'Rourke and Yang.

Thanks to the 18th-century relic known as the Electoral College, a Presidential candidate can win the election even though his opponent receives more votes. It's happened five times so far. The votes in individual states are more important than the national vote. In 2016, Trump won Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida by one percentage point or less. Those four states could determine who wins in 2020. Many analysts think Wisconsin will be the key battleground state. Wisconsin holds its Democratic primary on April 7.

"Being in the House minority with President Donald Trump in the White House just isn't a lot of fun," writes CNN's Chris Cillizza. They can't pass legislation and Trump has cost the Republican party the support of "critical constituencies, including suburban women and Hispanics." Fourteen House Republicans (so far) have announced they will not run for re-election in 2020. Two are running for other offices. The other 12 are just quitting. Many more could follow.
