How a 'blue shift' in mail ballots might set off election week chaos
    Reuters, Sep 8 2020

When polls closed in Arizona's Senate race in November 2018, initial results from in-person voting showed Republican Martha McSally in the lead. Her advantage evaporated in the days that followed with the tallying of postal ballots. "Electoral corruption - call for a new election?" President Donald Trump posted on Twitter at the time. His suggestion had no effect, and McSally conceded to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema six days after election day.

A similar "blue shift," with blue representing Democrats, could play out in the November 3 Presidential election, with the Republican Trump ahead in early returns and Democrat Joe Biden emerging as the winner in the days that follow. Nearly half of Democrats say they plan to vote by mail, while only one quarter of Republicans plan to do so. Demand is driven in no small part by fear of infection from the coronavirus in public. Counting mail ballots is often slower because officials must open thick envelopes, verify the ballots and validate voters' identities, compared with the simpler, speedier process at a polling center where voters cast ballots in person.

Biden's campaign is bracing for Trump to complain the contest is being stolen as the lead shifts, say people close to the Biden campaign. Even some Republicans worry that Trump might exploit the uncertainty to cast doubt on the results if he ends up losing. "The longer it takes to count absentee ballots, the more the narrative will take hold among Trump supporters and will be their 'proof' to question unfavorable election results," said Dennis Darnoi, a Republican strategist based in Michigan, a state Trump won by less than a percentage point in 2016. Trump repeatedly makes unfounded claims that mail voting leads to fraud, even though multiple studies show voter fraud in the United States to be extremely rare.

It seems the Department of Homeland Security, same as the Department of Justice and the United States Attorney General, exist solely to serve Donald Trump and not the American people. Fifty-five days till election day.

Intelligence official told to halt Russian 2020 election meddling threat assessments: whistleblower
    Reuters, Sep 9 2020 12:04 PM

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf told a former top aide to stop providing assessments of the threat of Russian interference in the November 3 election and to play down US white supremacist activity, according to a whistleblower complaint released today. Brian Murphy, a former Homeland Security deputy undersecretary for intelligence, said in the complaint that Wolf told him in mid-May to begin reporting instead on political interference threats posed by China and Iran and to highlight the involvement of left-wing groups in domestic disorder. The instruction had come to Wolf from White House national security adviser Robert O'Brien, Murphy cited Wolf as saying.

Murphy's complaint said he declined to comply with Wolf's order because doing so "would put the country in substantial and specific danger." On a second occasion in July, Murphy said Wolf told him an intelligence notification on Russian disinformation efforts should be "held" because "it made the President look bad."

The lies and false accusations continue. Is this any way to run a re-election campaign? If you're Donald Trump, yes. Yes, it is.

Trump lies that Biden would 'destroy' Obamacare's protections for pre-existing conditions
    CNN, Sep 11 2020 5:25 PM

President Donald Trump yesterday told one of the most absurd lies of his relentlessly dishonest reelection campaign. At a campaign rally in Freeland, Michigan, Trump claimed Joe Biden "will destroy your protections for pre-existing conditions." Trump went on to say that he would himself preserve these protections. This is not only false but a complete reversal of reality. The protections for people with pre-existing conditions were created by the very Obama administration in which Biden served as Vice President – as part of Obamacare, the 2010 law Biden has vowed to preserve and strengthen if elected President. Trump, conversely, has tried repeatedly to get bills passed that would have weakened these protections. He is now trying to get the entirety of Obamacare struck down by the courts.

The Economist ( https://projects.economist.com/us-20...cast/president ) gives Joe Biden a 96% chance of winning the popular vote and an 83% chance of winning in the Electoral College. Fifty-one days till election day.

Analysis: Why Biden's national lead matters
    CNN, Sep 13 2020 10:43 AM ET

A new Monmouth University poll finds that former Vice President Joe Biden holds a 51% to 44% lead over President Donald Trump among likely voters. Among registered voters, it's Biden 51% to 42% for Trump. The average of the two, an 8-point Biden advantage, is in-line with the national polling average. But winning the popular vote means nothing in and of itself. You only become president if you win the Electoral College. That said, the national polling matters a lot.

Last week, I outlined how Biden's margin in the pivotal Electoral College states was narrower than in the popular vote. That's still true today and will almost certainly be true through the election. There is a limit, however, to the extent to which Biden can win in the popular vote without also taking an Electoral College majority. If Biden wins by more than 5 points nationally, he's almost certainly going to win enough electoral votes to get to at least 270 and take the Electoral College.

The editors of a science magazine are, not surprisingly, opposed to a President who continually rejects science and believes he knows better than everyone else.

An endorsement for Biden from an unexpected source
Yahoo News, Sep 15 2020 6:54 PM ET

Scientific American today endorsed Joe Biden, the first Presidential endorsement in the magazine's 175-year history. Its editors said they felt "compelled" to do so because President Trump's well-documented rejection of science, from climate change to the coronavirus, has cost tens of thousands of American lives.

"The pandemic would strain any nation and system," the editors wrote, "but Trump's rejection of evidence and public health measures have been catastrophic in the US. He was warned many times in January and February about the onrushing disease, yet he did not develop a national strategy to provide protective equipment, coronavirus testing or clear health guidelines. Trump claimed, falsely, that 'anybody that wants a test can get a test.' That was untrue in March and remained untrue through the summer. Trump opposed $25 billion for increased testing and tracing that was in a pandemic relief bill as late as July. These lapses accelerated the spread of disease through the country, particularly in highly vulnerable communities that include people of color, where deaths climbed disproportionately to those in the rest of the population." The monthly magazine has a circulation of 3.5 million.

Because Donald Trump does not respect the Presidency, Mary Trump suggests Joe Biden should disrespect Trump by calling him "Donald" instead of "Mr. Trump." Actually, Donald would probably prefer "King Donald" or "Emperor Trump."
