Lake Hughes is an unincorporated community northwest of Palmdale. This fast-moving blaze, dubbed the Lake Fire, began in mid-afternoon today near North Lake Hughes Road and is at zero containment.

California Governor Gavin Newsom reported this afternoon that 367 wildfires are burning throughout the state. Most are not very large and many were caused by lightning strikes. Thirteen of the fires are 1,000 acres or larger. The SCU Lightning Complex fire north of Napa has burned 124,100 acres and is at zero containment. The LNU Lightning Complex fire south of Tracy has burned 102,000 acres and is 5% contained. The Apple Fire has burned 33,424 acres and is 95% contained. The Lake Hughes fire has burned 26,213 acres and is 38% contained.

The state's four largest wildfires are the LNU Lightning Complex, which has burned 314,207 acres and is only 15% contained; the SCU Lightning Complex, which has burned more than 292,000 acres; the CZU Lightning Fire, which has burned 63,000 acres; and the River Fire south of Salinas which has burned 45,000 acres. The El Dorado fire in Yucaipa has now burned 8,600 acres and is only 7% contained. It was started by a husband and wife who invited family members to a "gender reveal" at El Dorado Ranch Park, then set off two pyrotechnic devices which emitted colored smoke. We don't know if the smoke was blue or pink – but we do know the devices started the fire. Can you say "criminal charges"? I knew you could.

So far this year, California wildfires have burned more than 3,100,000 acres (4,844 square miles). The largest fire in state history is the August Complex Fire, a merger of 37 blazes that began last month in the Mendocino and Shasta-Trinity National Forests in northern California. It has now burned 746,700 acres (1,167 square miles).

The Bobcat fire in the Angeles National Forest has now burned 99,400 acres (155 square miles). It has destroyed several homes in Juniper Hills and is threatening Valyermo and Wrightwood. Much of the town of Talent in southwest Oregon has been destroyed by fire. Here is the drone video:
