Placerville, originally a gold-mining town known as Dry Diggin's, was incorporated in 1854. Mark Twain was a writer for the town's Mountain Democrat newspaper. A wildfire near Placerville burned 25 acres in June 2016. Another wildfire near Placerville broke out yesterday.

Castaic is a town 42 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Several scenes in the 1977-83 tv series CHiPs were filmed at the CHP inspection station in Castaic. And Castaic is the site of California's latest wildfire.

Many wildfires are caused by lightning strikes. Some wildfires begin when a campfire gets out of control. A majority are probably caused by arson -- but it's almost impossible to prove arson when the fire destroys all the evidence.

Cajón Pass is a mountain pass north of San Bernardino. The nearby 15 Freeway goes from San Diego to Las Vegas and continues north-northeast through Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana, ending at the US-Canada border. And today the Pass is the latest part of California to burn.

Vehicle blamed for deadly Ferguson fire that charred 97,000 acres, shut down Yosemite
    KTLA, Oct 5 2018 8:36 PM

Authorities say a California wildfire that killed two firefighters in Northern California was caused by a vehicle. The US Forest Service today said investigators determined that a hot catalytic converter ignited dry roadside vegetation. However, investigators haven’t identified the vehicle.

The so-called Ferguson Fire began on July 13 along Highway 140 in the Sierra National Forest. It was contained in August after burning nearly 97,000 acres in two national forests and Yosemite National Park.

More than 3,000 firefighters battled the blaze, which injured 19 people, destroyed 10 buildings and closed Yosemite for weeks in the midst of the tourist season.

In September, a huge wildfire forced the closure of a 45-mile stretch of the 5 freeway and another fire forced the closure of a section of the 15 freeway. Was there any reason to think October would be different?

Remember when teenagers used to go to the malt shop or the bowling alley when they got out of school on Friday afternoon? Now, apparently, some of them start arson fires.

Firefighters battle 50-acre fire north of CSU San Bernardino
    ABC7, Oct 12 2018

Firefighters are battling a brush fire today in the San Bernardino Mountains north of the Cal State campus. The fire was first reported at 1:44 PM and is sending up big plumes of smoke into the sky as it burns through light to medium brush. It grew quickly from an initial report of about three acres to 50 acres within less than an hour.

The Cal State San Bernardino Police Department said two subjects were detained in connection to the fire. It was not immediately clear exactly what role they may have played in the fire. The cause remains under investigation. Fire agencies have about 150 personnel battling the flames on the ground, along with two helicopters and three air tankers.

Several of California's biggest wildfires were started by downed power lines. Winds of up to 50 miles an hour are expected in southern California tomorrow. Southern California Edison is planning to shut off electricity in certain fire-prone areas so if power lines snap, they won't spark a fire. In northern California, high winds and power shutoffs are already happening.

I appreciate the electric company's honesty but they must know their admission is an invitation for thousands of fire victims to sue them.
