The huge fire near Redding burned 229,651 acres and last week was finally contained. A new fire broke out yesterday near Dunsmuir, north of Redding, and has already burned more than 23 square miles.

Here is an update on California's newest wildfire. This one has led to the closure of a 45-mile stretch of the Golden State (5) Freeway. For many tiny communities near the freeway, there is no other way in or out. What if they have to evacuate? Do firefighters take them out by helicopter?

Residents of Dunsmuir -- a cute little town with a riverside resort with railroad cars converted into lodging -- and Lakehead and several other small communities near Interstate 5 north of Lake Shasta are completely isolated now. A few homes have been destroyed by the Delta fire, which has burned 35 square miles and is 0% contained. A few miles to the east is the Hirz fire, which has burned 46,150 acres and is 80% contained.

The state of California covers 163,696 square miles. In the past year and a half, wildfires have burned more than 4,100 square miles of California and we can expect more fires, larger fires and faster-spreading fires. Oh, joy.

CalFire just updated the numbers for the two huge wildfires burning in Shasta County. The Delta fire has burned 40,580 acres and is 0% contained. The Hirz fire has burned 46,150 acres and is 90% contained. Forty-five miles of Interstate 5 will remain closed tomorrow and possibly longer.
In Napa County, eight miles southeast of Middleton, a new fire broke out in mid-afternoon and has already burned 400 acres. It is 10% contained. When I started the California Burning thread last year, I never dreamed I would be adding to it almost every day. Maybe things will calm down in December.
The Delta fire is now 5% contained. It has burned 40,903 acres and has merged with the Hirz fire, which is 95% contained. A 45-mile stretch of Interstate 5 will remain closed indefinitely. Portions will have to be repaved and melted signs and guardrails will have to be replaced. The closure is costing millions of dollars a day because I-5 is the only local route from Northern California to Oregon and truckers can not get through. When the Delta fire started September 5 and jumped the I-5, several truckers had to abandon their trucks, which were subsequently destroyed by flames.
Three new fires broke out today in Los Angeles County. A driver veered off the 118 freeway near Chatsworth and hit a telephone pole. The lines snapped and caused a ten-acre fire. In the mountains north of Azusa, a 60-acre fire prompted evacuations and road closures. A brush fire in a rural area 15 miles west of Lancaster quickly burned 170 acres before firefighters got it under control.
