Winds are carrying the smoke all the way across the United States. I can hear the advisory: "Unhealthful air quality today because of wildfires 3,000 miles away. Avoid outdoor activity."

The fire near Redding has burned 190,873 acres and is 57% contained. The Trabuco Canyon/Lake Elsinore fire is at 22,158 acres but the Los Angeles Times says firefighters have the "upper hand." What exactly does that mean? And why do we never hear anything about the lower hand?

California is one of several states dealing with raging wildfires this summer. Nationwide, more than 1,600,000 acres have burned. That's 2,500 square miles. By comparison, the state of Rhode Island covers 1,034 square miles and the state of Delaware covers 1,955 square miles.

The Holy fire has now burned 22,714 acres and is 41% contained. The fire was so named because it started along Holy Jim Canyon Road. Jim Smith was one of the area's first settlers in the 1880s. He was known as "Cussin' Jim" and later, ironically, as "Holy Jim."

    Who was Holy Jim, anyway?

The bad news: Twenty California wildfires are still raging. The good news: Firefighters are slowly getting them contained. The Carr fire near Redding has now burned 191,211 acres and is 59% contained. The Ferguson fire has burned 95,947 acres and is 83% contained and most of the closed sections of Yosemite National Park will reopen in two days. The Stanislaus County fire is at 26,814 acres and 20% containment.

The Mendocino Complex fire is actually two huge blazes, the Ranch fire and the River fire. The Ranch fire has now burned 282,500 acres, surpassing last year's Thomas fire which burned 281,893 acres. The River fire has burned 48,920 acres. Combined, the two Mendocino fires have burned 331,420 acres (518 square miles).

The California wildfires are still raging -- so what else is new? -- but containment is rising. The Ferguson fire near Yosemite is 86% contained, the Mendocino Complex fire is 68% contained, the Carr fire near Redding is 61% contained and the Holy fire in Trabuco Canyon/Lake Elsinore is 52% contained. Unfortunately, once these fires are finally contained, it could still be many weeks before they're completely extinguished.
