melted patch cable

I have a Sirius radio connected to my truck radio via a 4 ft stereo patch cable to the aux input.
This cable has served me well for years. Last week the entire cable melted and almost caught fire.
I replaced the cable and all seems good.
I did not think there was enough power in the audio output to cause this kind of damage, or is there a problem with the radio?

It seems more likely that something around that cable caused it to melt.

Was the cable hidden in the dash or externally just sitting in your cab?

That is insane. It seems more likely that there is a short in the board and too much power is moving through the jack.

Is the new cable getting hot?

Also, was the old cable rolled up? It looks like a section is rolled up in your picture. When you create tight turns/angles with cable you create resistance. Resistance creates heat (like a toaster).

because the old cable was too long, it was rolled up. The new cable is heavier and shorter. It shows no sign of over heating, but neither did the old cable for over a year.

Being rolled up probably didn't help.

Hopefully it was a fluke and the result of a cheaper cable.

If this new one catches fire, you have to check back and let us know. I use a similar cable on my old jeep and I have never had a problem.
