Another day, another mass shooting in the United States. No other country has as many shootings as we do -- and no other country has as many guns as we do. Draw your own conclusions. And it didn't take long for the President to send out a tweet offering the "thoughts and prayers" that are de rigueur after every mass shooting in the United States:
"I was briefed on the shooting at Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Thank you to all the First Responders who are currently on the scene."
As long as we have a Republican President and a Republican-led Congress who do the NRA's bidding, the response to shootings will never be anything other than "thoughts and prayers."
5 dead in shooting at newspaper building in Maryland, suspect in custody
CBS News, Jun 28 2018 5:06 PM EDT
Five people were killed today in a shooting at a newspaper building in Annapolis, Maryland, and several others were gravely wounded. One suspect is in custody. The shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper prompted a massive police response, with employees evacuated from the building with hands raised above their heads. The Gazette is a local newspaper owned by The Baltimore Sun.
The first shots were reported at 2:40 PM after the shooter entered the building, which also houses other businesses. Police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said officers had raced to the scene, arriving in 60 seconds, and engaged the shooter, who was using a shotgun. The suspect, a white male in his 20s, was taken into custody. He had no identification and is refusing to identify himself.
Phil Davis, a Gazette reporter, tweeted that he was in the building when the shooting happened. Davis said via Twitter the gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. He said he hid under his desk and employees heard the gunman reload. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan called it a "tragic situation" and praised local law enforcement for their quick response.
