    Five dead in Maryland shooting

Another day, another mass shooting in the United States. No other country has as many shootings as we do -- and no other country has as many guns as we do. Draw your own conclusions. And it didn't take long for the President to send out a tweet offering the "thoughts and prayers" that are de rigueur after every mass shooting in the United States:

"I was briefed on the shooting at Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Thank you to all the First Responders who are currently on the scene."

As long as we have a Republican President and a Republican-led Congress who do the NRA's bidding, the response to shootings will never be anything other than "thoughts and prayers."

5 dead in shooting at newspaper building in Maryland, suspect in custody
CBS News, Jun 28 2018 5:06 PM EDT

Five people were killed today in a shooting at a newspaper building in Annapolis, Maryland, and several others were gravely wounded. One suspect is in custody. The shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper prompted a massive police response, with employees evacuated from the building with hands raised above their heads. The Gazette is a local newspaper owned by The Baltimore Sun.

The first shots were reported at 2:40 PM after the shooter entered the building, which also houses other businesses. Police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said officers had raced to the scene, arriving in 60 seconds, and engaged the shooter, who was using a shotgun. The suspect, a white male in his 20s, was taken into custody. He had no identification and is refusing to identify himself.

Phil Davis, a Gazette reporter, tweeted that he was in the building when the shooting happened. Davis said via Twitter the gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. He said he hid under his desk and employees heard the gunman reload. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan called it a "tragic situation" and praised local law enforcement for their quick response.

CNN's Evan Perez just issued this update: "A law enforcement source says the suspect in custody initially refused to cooperate. The suspect had no identification when he was arrested and FBI found no information immediately in the system." A motive for the shooting is unknown.

CNN is reporting that the shooter, hoping to avoid being identified, had altered his fingerprints with acid, a file or some other means. Police are trying to identify him by using facial recognition software to search a database of passport photos and driver license photos.

NBC is reporting that the gunman has now been identified through the use of facial identification software. He is a 39-year-old white male from Maryland. Police are not yet releasing his name. They are obtaining a warrant so they can search his home.

Today's shooting gives us one more example of the President's hypocrisy, bigotry and xenophobia: When a Muslim man kills people, Trump says we need to ban all Muslims -- but when an American-born white man kills people, Trump never says we should ban all American-born white men. News flash, Mr. President: Anybody with a gun -- anybody of any race or religion or nationality -- can kill people. Offering "thoughts and prayers" will not change anything.

CNN's Anderson Cooper speculated that the gunman may have been enraged by something he read in the Capital Gazette. That is very likely. Anger + guns = mass shootings. The Associated Press issued this update:

"Police say The Capital Gazette newspaper in Maryland had received threats on social media prior to today's deadly shooting. In a news conference, Anne Arundel County acting police chief William Krampf said 'general threats' had been made against the newspaper. Investigators are trying to determine whether the threats were connected to the suspect. Five people were killed and two injured in the attack. Krampf described the two injuries as superficial. Krampf said the shooter used canisters of smoke grenades when he entered the building and began firing."

Police have identified the suspect in today's shooting as Jarrod Ramos. Yes, they call him only a "suspect" even though we all know he did it. The five murder victims have also been named. They are a writer, an assistant editor, the editorial page editor, the special-publications editor and a sales assistant.

Bloomberg reporter Madi Alexander has set up a GoFundMe page for anyone wishing to help cover the costs of funerals, medical bills, newsroom repairs and other expenses:

Jarrod Ramos had tried -- unsuccessfully -- to sue the Capital Gazette for defamation over a story about his arrest for harassment and his guilty plea. Then he began threatening the newspaper's writers. Five people are now dead. The moral here: Take all online threats seriously. Ramos has been arraigned on five counts of murder and is being held on no bail.

We all would have understood if the Capital Gazette was not published today. However, it was published as usual -- and the paper chose an unusual way to commemorate the five shooting victims:

The lawyer who represented a woman who was repeatedly harassed and stalked by Jarrod Ramos said the shooting was inevitable: "He was going to do something violent. The only question was, who would he get first." Anger, violent behavior, threatening messages, access to guns -- why were all the warning signs ignored? This massacre could have been prevented.

Here is why gun laws need to be strengthened. Violent hate-filled maniacs should never be allowed to buy weapons. Unfortunately, as long as Republicans hold a majority in the House and Senate, nothing will change. Their only response to mass shootings is to offer "thoughts and prayers."

Jarrod Ramos swore a 'legal oath' to kill Capital Gazette staff and had three restraining orders against him -- but legally purchased a shotgun
